Awesome, thank you, glad it was helpful. And yea, I do the guides like this because I got sick of watching a head talking about something, especially if it was in questions that they actually used it or really understood it. I use the gear for at least a few months before I post everything. I don't want to waste anyone's time if the gear is no good. So anyway, long answer, but thank you.

This watch is great! I never hiked or ran before it, I bought it for biking and fitness. But it motivated me to start, and I don’t regret it. I love running and turning in random directions and just ending up in a random place, then I use the track me feature so it will make a course back home. I live near mountains and parks to so it’s pretty cool seeing all the trails people do most. Definitely a lifestyle changer. Love it.

Owning both; an Apple Watch OLED is amazing yet tricky in the sun, the Fenix 5X is mind blowing beautiful in the sun yet average indoors. The Fenix 5X’s display is build for the outdoors and you can tell first time wearing it, also way more rugged then an Apple Watch. As the author of this video mentions; both have different purposes so choose wisely:) I love my Fenix 5X!

Great video again. I've been looking at the Garmin Fenix 5 too so this was a welcome review. Quick tip for you though... at one point you were trying to show how to use the phone app to sync the maps. You could've just displayed the phone on your computer since you were using a Mac. Plug your iPhone in (via USB) and run Quicktime Player. It lets you display your phone on your screen (File -> New Movie Recording) and you can then show both the Garmin website AND the phone interaction. I do this when running demos/presentations at work all the time. All the best.

@Hikingguy4 жыл бұрын
Thank you 👍 I'm not sure of the long term battery life but within a year or two it holds up as advertised. It has maps on it and you can download OSM maps too. Check out the article in the link. If you use it on a thru-hike you'd just have to charge it periodically. I would consider a Fenix 6 which has many more power management options that make it good for a thru-hike.

Thank you for such a comprehensive review! One question - - can you set one of the hiking fields to display elevation gain? Another question--if you load a route onto the watch, are you able to see the elevation profile, and will it show you where you currently are on that profile? I've got lots of ups and downs on my hikes, and it would be very useful for me to see the climbs up ahead. Thank you!

I purchased the Fenix 5X a few days ago to take advantage of the $150 off sale Garmin has going on right now for the Fenix line in the US. That put the price of the 5X at $449.99. It is still a lot of money but I think a great value for what it offers. It is an amazing watch with a lot of features I am figuring out. Your video has be been a great help. Thanks! I am using the same Watch Face as you. The video shows the customization of the face at 3:59. There is a curved red line at the top of the dial and a similar curved gray line at the bottom of the dial. Do you happen to know what those two lines represent? I am thinking the red line may be related to the heart rate data but I can not till what. Sometimes it shows and sometimes not. The gray curved line is there all the time. Maybe it relates to a goal? I cannot find any documentation on it anywhere. Thanks for any help!

Cool cool, glad the review came in handy and hope you enjoy the watch. Yea, it's on sale at REI now too, and that's a great buy. For the curved bands, that's a good question. Hope that helps!

Apple Watch isn’t an outdoor instrument? Could you explain why?
@Hikingguy6 жыл бұрын
It'll work if you're doing short hikes, but the 5 hour battery life when tracking will make it a non-starter for many hikers. The Fenix is basically built for the outdoors / hiking, it's a rugged tough piece of gear. The Apple Watch has more of a general use focus, a nicer screen, and a better integration with iOS. But I wouldn't want to bang it into a rock, etc. and feel good about it being my sole source of navigation.

Thinking of picking one up (late to the party). Usually i use the AllTrails maps - could i download/integrate them on here?
@Hikingguy4 жыл бұрын
You can download the GPX file from Alltrails and then load it as a course into Garmin Connect, and then sync to the phone. A few steps but it works.

I am looking to get a watch most for triathlons!! Do you still recommend the fenix 5x or any other watch? Thank you
@Hikingguy6 жыл бұрын
I have friends who do tri & hike and use it, it supports Tri & multisport - I don't do tri myself so can't say from personal, but I do use it for bike, run, and swim individually, and it's great

Does anyone know if this watch has a "FIND ME" or similar feature? Just wondering if it would replace an EPIRB (emergency positioning locator radio beacon) or if I would need to buy one aswell. Thanks, in advance :)
@Hikingguy6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't broadcast to satellite, so unfortunately no. I'd recommend this if you want a good 2-way EPIRB: hikingguy.com/hiking-gear/in-depth-garmin-inreach-explorer-review/

Looking for a device that will locate someone in the wilderness. For example, if someone gets injured and is unconscious. Is there a device they can wear to find them without them sending an SOS.
@Hikingguy5 жыл бұрын
You can do this with an inReach on tracking mode. >> hikingguy.com/hiking-gear/in-depth-garmin-inreach-mini-review/

Hi folks. Can anyone advise why the hiking activity randomly stops tracking then starts again thus making the stats wrong. Its happening on most hikes irrespective of locations eg NW England, Germany etc. Advice appreciated thx
@andyrobinson39382 жыл бұрын
Ends up with various straight lines on the track but does not register the distance. Happy to share screen shot if that's possible?

Maybe you have "auto-pause" on?
@andyrobinson39382 жыл бұрын
@@Hikingguy hi. Thx for replying. I do have auto pause on... Shouldn't I??
@Hikingguy2 жыл бұрын
@@andyrobinson3938 I don't think it kicks back on until you go faster, maybe 2-3mph. I turn it off and start/stop the acvitity when needed. I find it gives me more accurate readings.

@@Hikingguy I'll give it a go thx. It's not an issue when running so it makes sense now. Cheers Andy

Ugh, I wish "every map you could ever want" was true. The ONLY map I want on a watch is the NatGeo Trails Illustrated base map :(
Would you say this watch is till worth that price tag? I'm really considering this watch for my hunts and hikes.
@Hikingguy6 жыл бұрын
If you think you'll use it for the outdoors and and fitness / wellness, yea, without a doubt. If you just need a mapping GPS, you can save money and get something like the eTrex 20.

You can probably just get away with a smartphone, Otterbox case, and GaiaGPS if you want to get a quick, cheap and effective GPS. > hikingguy.com/best-hiking-gear/
