Funny how things go, I needed to get something quickly because my 2017 VivoActive HR broke, and my moose hunt starts in a week. Talking with coworkers, and one guy got a "basic" Instinct for Christmas and hasn't worn it since February, so I bought his. I viewed several of your videos. I linked watch with Connect & Explore phone apps, set most things up to my liking, and practiced navigating in town this weekend. I see that besides Hike, Navigate & Track me, etc, there is a "tactical" application. I'd like to see an explainer video of that one. There's also some hidden apps that I found in the hot keys setup. Among others, there is Sight 'n go, MOB, and Dual GPS Grid (not sure why there is dual coordinates when they're both the same - how can I change 1 line to military grid?)

I have the Instinct 2 non solar so I'm wondering if Garmin updated it for the HUNT feature. I grouse and pheasant hunt, but I don't think there's anything in this feature that would benefit me. The GPS track back and direction features are what are more important. And I can link it to my dog's GPS tracking collar for quick reference.

I hunt the same way as you, but on public land, so things can be different year to year. I'm about to go hunting later on, and literally on the fence between the more expensive instinct solar (non-tactical) at $560 where I am, and the non-solar tactical at $350 at this time, just because of price. Is the extended battery power worth it if I can charge for an hour each night? Can way points be saved and named "tree stand", ATV, and "Camp" in the non-solar that doesn't have this hunt app?

Here are just my thoughts. . . .take them for what they are worth :). If the price difference was $100 like it is here in the U.S., I would say get the solar just because solar charging is cool, and to be able to see the amount of solar charging you get is cool. The hunt widget is kind of cool because when you save the locations you get the cool icons (like the ATV, Deer Antlers, etc.). However with all that said. . . if budget is an issue and you can save some money, you aren't missing much by getting the non solar version. I used to charge my non solar on average every 23 days. With my Solar Instinct I am getting 1 to 5 days more (using the same exact settings). . . which to me is not really that great and not worth the extra cost. On the non solar Instinct you can still save way points and re-name them (i.e. Tree Stand", "ATV", etc.) you just might not be able to put the hunting icons on them using your instinct. However there is a free app called "Garmin Explore", that you can put on your phone. It will automatically connect to your Instinct and pull in all of the way points. . . once they are on the app you can change the icons there (to give made it deer antlers, atv, tracks, etc.). If I were in your shoes I don't see paying an extra $210 for the solar version. . . but that's just me. Hope this help.

​@@JUMBLE2015 thanks for the insight and great vids! I'm in Ontario, Canada, and I also add 13% tax on everything, so under $400 is a great price for the Instinct Tactical. Although I don't need Tactical, it comes in Coyote Tan, and I though that would look nice. I am also thinking that I could use the stealth mode to save power when I'm just sitting in my blind all day calling in a moose or a deer, or hiding up a tree over bear bait.

Thank you for the explanations in the video. When I sync my watch to Garmin connect it doesn't show the saved locations such as tree stand or so. Does anyone know how to make it appear on the app I can't find the information

Is this a base model solar or a tactical solar? If TS is this Hunt feature only available on the tactical solar? How do I add it to a Instinct Solar?

This is the base solar model. I think the hunt activity is on both the base solar and solar tactical (but not the non solar models). You need to add it as an activity (by default it is not there). Would you rather take the solar tactical or suunto traverse for hunting and tracking purposes?

I have never used the Solar Tactical, just the regular Garmin Instinct and the Solar Instinct. From a battery life, GPS, features and comfortable to wear standpoint I would pick the Garmin. The Garmin phone Apps are a lot better than the Suunto app as well. The one thing I did like about the Traverse is it had a Hunting Times feature which would tell you the best times to hunt (which I liked). If the Garmin had that feature (which the Fenix does), it would easily be the pick. I picked up an eTrex for $60 which gives me the Hunt/Fish times but I would have liked it on my watch. Both are cool, but I sold my Traverse and bought the Instinct and have no regrets. Thanks for the question, take care.

I hunt with a pointing dog, went the dog goes on point at a 100 yards in the woods can i put a quick waypoint on the watch in the trail before i go to the dog to find my way back ?

I think I am understanding you correctly. Sure you can do that. You don't even have to use the hunt activity, you can use just the basic GPS navigation feature. You would want to save a waypoint at your starting location. . . . . then go to your dog. At any point you can simply chose to navigate back to the waypoint to get back to your starting location. Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

I am waiting for my Garmin Astro 900 to arrive to track my dog, will see how that goes... I recommend you get a GPS collar for your dog, it’s a game changer, a pointing dog job is to run the country and move outside your view, a GPS collar will give you constant updates as to their points and activities plus tell you your location to your vehicle. Several vendors, including Garmin offer these.

I do. My first Instinct I did not have one. . . .6 months in got a scratch on the crystal that drove me crazy When I got my Solar, before I even put it on my wrist I put a screen protector on it.

How many activities i can used without having to be connected to a phone.. in my opinion Outdoor watch is fail if always must be connected whit phone to work full.

You can do all of them pretty much without being connected to your phone. All your phone gives you is your phone notifications, music from your phone and it updates the weather. I hardly ever take my phone with I do any activities (i.e. walking, running, etc.). i just put the watch on and go. Then when I get home I connect my phone so I can load the activity into Garmin Connect. Hope that helps.

Suunto have finally made my traverse alpha pretty much useless buy not being Able to add points from the app. Also annoying as you don't take a laptop out hunting. So it has no moon calendar , but does it have a storm alarm?

I use to have a Traverse Alpha, honestly for hunting I thought it was a better watch than the instinct. The instinct does have sunrise and sunset, moon phase, temperature, storm alert, etc. The fact that they did not put hunt and fish times on it was just a big miss for me. There is supposedly a second Instinct coming out in March that will be larger with even better battery. I would maybe hold off for that one to see if they happen to add hunt and fish times. The Fenix model currently has that available, sometimes I think I should have just spent more and got that one. Hope this helps. @@JUMBLE2015 thank you for the reply. I love my suunto. If they just made that happen it does all I need. Mark a beast location to go back to next morning or save a location for if the weather gets bad. I just wished i could add a save location from the phone app for if the wind is wrong etc. You advice has been great. I think I will save for a Fenix 6.

@@JUMBLE2015 Tides for fishing vary greatly by location so you are really better off printing those when you are at your computer planning your trip, which is the same place you would be looking at the lunar calendar.
