Hi Dave, the question is - “why did Garmin make this change?”. My guess is that most of their competitors were offering this feature natively with no additional sensor and so Garmin had to course correct. They didn’t want to - they HAD to.

this is a welcome addition to the latest garmin watches, if they can work on smoothing out some of those seemingly random spikes it could be great. Now wishing for a power standard to be agreed on now that all the major brands offer it on the wrist. Really love that GAP has been added too which is going to be super handy for those that would prefer to stick to pace.

I don't understand how they are accurately calculating this. I'm also a cyclist and have a power meter on my road bike. I know that data is accurate and has been verified. In cycling power is measured by force and torque, and a whole lot of other things. A wrist watch can in no way measure power from your arm for your legs. To be honest they would have to design something that goes into the bottom of your shoe to get any real power numbers. Appreciate you as always

Right, the Stryd Pod attached to your shoe (shown in this video). These watches use a combination of sensors+GPS data to derive the same information. In some cases it’s pretty darn close to the Stryd!

Coming from the cycling side where watts are measured with a strain gauge in the pedals or on the crank arm, the best thing for those who are "tri" curious would be to correlate the watt values shown for running with equivalent effort levels on a bike. I know that the difference in biomechanical efficiency between the two actions can account for some difference, but it shouldn't be vastly different.

I think they need to fix the bugs on the FR955 first before adding this feature. I had to get a RD Pod to work around the cadence recording bug introduced about six weeks ago. I've discovered this feature on my fenix (I'm not a runner, so I've seen the stat and got exited). It kinda correlates with my cycling power output for the given HR zone. It kinda similar to my PWC test on ergometer, so I get more or less adequate W/kg value. I think all in all it's nice to have for hobby runners )

This just installed as an update for me today out of the blue. I've been using the Stryd pod for about a year and hoped it was going to show similar power. I guess the question with Garmin power implementation is how do you use the power information to help determine your run effort for say a race or workout. Yes it shows the power but the benefit I have found with Stryd is in the analysis their app does to show you a target power for races, distances & times. If the power readings were all similar then you can see a use case but Garmin needs to offer some way of interpreting the power data otherwise I'm not sure on it's use.

I was so surprised to get a notification yesterday from Garmin about this update and I installed it immidiately. I just LOVE the new morning screen. Super nice. To be honest, I'm always running with my HRM Pro, so I always have the running power metric and I won't be using the wrist option. That being said, I never even realized what this metric is good for. I have my HR to tell me how hard I work at any given moment. What does looking at Power gives me in addition to that? Not clear to me.

I think, like with heart rate, a wrist based measurement will provide a reasonable approximation. However, if you are going to use the data to set paces and training, you will want a purpose built device to gather and report to the watch (i.e. a chest strap for HRM and a Stryd Pod for power). Especially with the new gen hardware forthcoming, Stryd will remain best of class for power accuracy for now and the foreseeable future.

Running power, imo, does not really makes sense - in terms of cycling it is W per KG which represents how fast you can go compared to another cyclist on similar terrain, however in running you already have a pace metric for that - so running power is basically telling you exactly the same AND you can not compare it to other athletes as it is not taking into account your weight as it is not relevant. The only applicable test should be running uphills / downhills and compare them to your perceived effort to running on flat - similar to GAP - sure Dave will do such a test right?! :)
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit Жыл бұрын
Running and Cycling Power are not really apples to apples though their names would suggest they are. Running Power isn't as solid of a metric since it's being recorded by movement and not an actual power transmission in a bike. Still though, linking perceived effort to power numbers while running can be valuable. More testing to come of course! This is just a first look.

Unfortunately Wrist Power, power using an HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro+ is only available in Run, certain other Sports. If I use Walk as the base for Hike or Garden I don't get the option for Power. I have to fork off of Run. So I have Garden forked from Run, Hike forked from Ultra Run. Or I have to wear a Stryd foot pod, and unless I tape it to my laces, I don't trust the Stryd to stay on in strenuous conditions.

Hi Dave, great content again. Question: are GAP numbers on the Garmin comparable to those reported in Strava and Training Peaks? I ask because Connect has been showing GAP (post run) since around the time the Enduro 2 was announced - but it is way off (or, at least, very different to the numbers reported on Strava and TP). Running and cycling with power is great. Cannot understand why so many serious runners use HR for TSS/ training control (and a lot of them do not even use an ECG, lol). Power is so comfy and what is even more important: it‘s reliable and accurate if you know what you do: correct pacing in fast intervalls is way more accurate with e.g. a Stryd than with GPS. 80/20 running is way easier to achieve with power. The problem with Garmin is that the data comes from GPS and accelerometers. The latter is good, GPS is a crap measurement. So, I would not use Power data from Garmin, nor Polar, nor Coros. Buy a Stryd, calibrate it in a vo2max lab test and on a 400m track, buy a book about running with power and you are good 😂

@Mierze19j87 Жыл бұрын
@@ChaseTheSummit Garmin shows it all. Resting + active calories. In active, it includes steps, walking, which Move IQ will record as a workout, and any workouts that we turn on. These resting calories, on the other hand, are BMR. For this, data on body weight, activity level, age, sex and height are required. The rest comes with HR and HRV and the measurement of oxidative stress. Additionally, you can connect MyFitnessPal and set a target and enter similar data. But it is a little different from Garmin's calculations. I think Garmin does it more accurately, because in addition to basic data, it includes sensor readings. I was doing a reduction in relation to the watch - 500 kcal and the error tolerance was so acceptable that finally I managed to reduce body fat effectively. The entire macrocycle lasted 8 months, 2 of which were 2x DELOAD. On weight - 16 kg. I also consider this to be sufficient evidence. But let's make an appointment. You need to have established habits, repeatability in nutrition, hydration, sleeping and training. No electronics will do something for us and there are no miracles.

No running power I've used is reliable enough (even with external sensor like stryd or HRM pro), and I found it's much more useful to just focus on my perceived exertion for training.

What is the best Garmin watch for those that run and cycle?
@StayLoose200
@StayLoose200 Жыл бұрын
honestly you could get away with a 55 and be fine. Depends on what type of running you do and if you're interested in maps, music, etc. Best bet if unsure, and money isn't a barrier, to go with the 955. Most bang for your buck. Again though, for basic hiking, walking, running, and biking a forerunner 55 will work fine.

"The best" is pretty subjective. It will come down to what size watch you prefer, what features you need, and of course your budget. The "best" could be seen as the most expensive (Fenix 7, Epix, Tactix, etc...) but they are larger heavier watches and feature mapping/navigation that you may or may not need.

Garmin needs to tone down that power. I run with HRM pro on my FR955 and the power i get is way inconsistent with the power i put out on the bike. I know I'm not running in the 350 to 410 average watts. Just doing the simple math of figuring out the power from calories used during a given exercise duration puts my average power quite a bit lower than what Garmin comes up with. Something in the neighbourhood of 100 watts too much give or take. My guess is Garmin is using the rebound in the shoes to calculate watts. Not sure, but i have more faith in polar, coros and the Apple watch when it comes to running power.

@@ChaseTheSummit example. Garmin says i averaged 354 watts during a 27:24, 3.16mile hilly run. Based on that i should have burned around 581 calories, but Garmin says i only burned 330 active calories. Reverse math with the 330 calories i get around 201 average watts. That seems more in line with the 142 avg HR for the workout and the 8:40 ppm with around 350 ft of elevation gain.

It’s important to remember that cycling power and running power are not the same thing despite having similar terminology. With running power as long as the metric is consistent it’s still useful one you’re calibrated to it. It’s only an issue if you use multiple different devices that are all giving you different results. Unfortunately there’s no standard in running power yet so none of them are technically wrong even though it’s a bit frustrating.
