Why a separate GPS vs. a smartphone?
Installation of the Garmin Zumo XT Motorcycle GPS Navigation on a Yamaha Ténéré 700. The GPS is connected to one of the three electrical accessories ports and mounted on a Rally Raid billet navigation bracket.
The 3 prong connector for the accessory port is: Sumitomo MT 090 Series. Cycle Terminal and Eastern Beaver have the connectors.
The correct crimp tool/plier for the MT 090 terminals: amzn.to/3ptRrgD

As I saw you dismounting the display I remembered something that many people don’t know and it’s one of Yamahas little secrets. If you take a closer look at the back of the display there are two extra holes (one on each side) for mounting the display at a different angle that helps read the instruments when standing up and it’s best used in off-road conditions . So there ya goo free knowledge for today fellas 😂

@orbsurfer Thank you for creating such great and informative content. Very helpful. After reading the comments below I find myself with a couple of questions I hope you will answer. 1. Does the Zumo XT include any mount to attach to the handlebar or accessory rail? No problem buying the Rally Raid mount if necessary. 2. Is it preferable to connect the Zumo XT to the two or three pin connector? Regardless of which one is picked must you buy a male or female connector? And is it the (L) or (S) as found at Eastern Beaver - L - Fits wires from .5mm - 1.25mm (20 - 16 AWG); S - Fits wires from 0.25mm - 0.5mm (28 - 20 AWG). Note: I will be adding the USB outlet as found in your other great video. Regards, Leo

You do an excellent job on all of your installation videos. I just ordered my Zumo, but I am still a bit confused - at the start of the video you mentioned a splitter to plug into the open Auxillary plug on the T-7, but then later you show the Wiring from the Zumo with the female Sumitomo connector on it. So, one of the mail ends of the splitter plugs into the Sumitomo connector?
@orbsurfer8195
@orbsurfer8195 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You do not need the splitter. I have too many devices connected to the three auxiliary ports; the reason I am using it. :-) Yes, that is correct. One of the Sumitomo MT-090 mail ends, the longer of the two connectors, connects to the on-board connector on the bike.

@@orbsurfer8195 OK - cool - thanks for clearing that up! Also, if you do not mind - 2 more questions: 1) Did you remove the fuse from the Zumo wiring harness? 2) Which colors match to the wires on the bike's connector? (does black match to black on the connectors)? Thanks again for responding.

I kept the fuse on the zūmo XT and yes, black is ground on the Ténéré 700 aux connectors and on the zūmo XT.

Nice Video! I'll keep my Iphone12 in my pocket considering weather elements and vibration, with that said, would you still place the Garmin Zumo XT on the cross bar above the Odometer, or use the space where your phone is now? Visual blocking concerns when using the crossbar, your thoughts?
@orbsurfer8195
@orbsurfer8195 3 жыл бұрын
I'm 6'-2" and have the 20 mm taller Rally Seat. Having the GPS mounted on the crossbar does not block the view at all and is the perfect place to mount the GPS because there is less movement of the eyes between the road and the GPS; i.e. a safer ride. I still use my phone on the handlebar, but look at it less because the Garmin GPS has a better overview map and does not annoy the heck out of me by "Rerouting" if I change the path to the destination. The Garmin GPS automatically chooses a new route without "Rerouting" for 5-10 minutes. I also mounted Anti Wobble Brackets; kzbin.info/www/bejne/gX6VZnmce7yrpZY, and the brackets help minimizing vibrations on the crossbar.

Finally picked up my T7 yesterday🤓! Now planning to add some accessories like a Garmin XT. If I understand it correctly there are two connectors under the panel on the right side - one three pin connector and one two pin? If this is the case would it then be OK to connect the XT to the two pin connector? Do you also happen to know the model number for this connector (need to order from Eastern Beaver)? Also have to say that your videos are the best out there in respect of explaining how things should be done! Much, much appreciated!!
@orbsurfer8195

Thanks and Congrats on Your Bike! Yes, the two-prong connector is fine for the GPS. All three connectors leads back to the same accessory fuse, and all three connectors are switched on/off with the ignition key. I had trouble finding the two-prong connector, and ended up getting it from eBay, Eastern Beaver did not have it when I did the mount. I do not know the model number, but I show a picture of the connector on the T7 forum: www.tenere700.net/topic/3152-yamaha-usb-socket/#comment-36805 Good Luck!

You mentioned lifting the tank and other panels. Looking at where the plugs are, it doesn’t look like you need to route it too far?
@orbsurfer8195
@orbsurfer8195 2 жыл бұрын
If you use one of the three electrical auxiliary plugs located under the two front panels, you do not need to lift the gasoline tank and remove other panels. When I mounted the GPS unit, I did not have the correct tools etc. to connect the GPS to the aux plugs, the reason I connected straight to the battery; a pain! :-) Using the aux plugs is a breeze if you have the connectors and the correct crimping plier!

EVERY time I fasten the Zumo XT to the Garmin bracket, I double, and triple check that the GPS is securely fastened, because it always seems not to be snapped in place. I have ridden on some very rough roads, and so far the Garmin has not fallen off. And of course, Threadlocker was used on all the bolts! :-) I like the lightly modified cellphone holder much better, because the bracket holds the phone extremely securely in place without squeezing the phone.

Lots comments here about gps vs ph.... has anyone considered the damage done to ph buy vibration?... I think it’s the camera the suffers the most.....
@orbsurfer8195
@orbsurfer8195 3 жыл бұрын
Several people have mentioned phone vibrations on other videos, and the phone mount I have holds the phone very securely, but not in a vice grip kind of way. There is rubber in all corners and on the main plate of the phone holder + the original padded silicone case helps absorbing vibrations, but of course, not eliminating it completely. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqe8ZWNspc6hldE I have used this setup the phone for quite a while now, and have had zero issues with the phone, with many, many miles traveled on gravel roads, but since the Garmin GPS is closer to the line of view, I use the phone map less and could just leave the phone in a pocket instead, minimizing vibrations even more! I guess a reason in itself to use a dedicated GPS navigation device.
