Take a small tarp with you to put the dug up dirt on so when you fill in the hole it looks much better. remember appearance can make or break access to locations to dig Also when you dig the plug dig a half circle and roll back the plug leaving the grass attached so it fits right back in

To get a idea of how your metal detector works, its a good idea to run a "bench test". Which is basically sitting at a table, that has few metal objects in it, and put a range of metal objects from tin to gold, that way you can begin to recognize the tones of your metal detector. Thanks, David, for all your work.

Dave, I have learned so much from you over the years....and I've been metal detecting for a while...I have a Minelab and a White's detector with mounted Sun Ray target probe pin pointers on each machine....and in my opinion, there is no better digging tool for metal detecting than a Leshe brand digger! I have smaller Leshe's and also the exact same Leshe "artifact shovel" you are using! Cheers, and good hunting!

Hey Dave, both "Two Toes" and "Ask Jeff Williams" have a ton of vids on metal detecting and using metal detectors (ground balancing, etc). Jeff Williams is kinda nuts, but entertaining, and the guy has probably forgotten more about geology than most of us will ever know. Might help you get a bit of a head start.

I bought a detector about 10+ years ago from a radio shack holiday sale. Real simple operation. Probably 30-40 dollars. I inadvertently became good at finding my relatives and whoever elses property stakes. This past couple videos gave me the bug to get a new one. And see if i can get the old one working again. The 9v connector came loose on one of the sides. It takes 2.

As an obsessed fisherman ,, I find metal detecting very similar,, I have used a metal detector for about 40 years,,,,,, some days you get multiple hits of value ,, most days just trash , but all trash eliminated is a good thing,,..carry a pouch and dispose of trash properly....cleans up area ,, plus eliminates a trash signal On your next time in that area... ..On your holes with multiple hits ,and finding an item, don't just fill in the hole before checking it again, the better item may still be in the hole......As mentioned by another comment, ANY grass area belongs to someone,, get permission preferably in writing with signature of authority....many Local, city , state , federal areas have had issues with detectorists and digging and leaving holes ,, BIG holes ,, and may have a preprinted form to fill out ,, some even have a permit that includes a fee ( surprise !!)...... Local , state and federal parks generally won't let you dig the grass ares,,, but scratching the ground may be OK..(I have used a garden tool or large fork)..You would be surprised how much is on the surface......Local schools can be loaded with stuff ,again get permission, playgrounds are goldmines where kids swing and hang,,amazing what kids have in there pockets,, I have found anything from coins,jewelry to live ammo in school playgrounds....the city parks playgrounds are usually cemented or chained down and workers tend to leave pieces of cut chain or nuts and bolts buried under the sand.......be sure to check volleyball pits ,, (the girls today don't wear cheap jewelry,, necklaces,chains,rings including toe rings are common to find,,, anything of value ,put notice in local paper,, some things are very sentimental )..Some lakes have swim beaches and they can be filled with all kinds of stuff,, coins,jewelry,tons of trash (dig all signals,,dispose of trash)..plenty of fishing hooks,tools , etc.. check with lake marinas for reported lost items ,,lost and found bulletin boards, sometimes expensive jewelry is lost,, check with a few insurance companies ,,let them know what you are in to,,,most have finders fee for lost items,,,( getting paid for spending time with your hobby?? Nothing wrong with that).....For me , the best city/town spots are where people gather ,, the different sports fields (soccer, baseball/football fields ,, on grasses and under bleachers)....I use local detecting to keep my ears in tune to the detector, not all have tones as the AT does.....then get out when possible to search for the treasures your imagination tells you is out there........just remember ,, ALL lands belong to someone,, get permission to search and dig,, be respectful and fill ALL holes ,, Don't get shot !! ..(That makes for a bad day).....

JMO. Get you a couple of those 99 cent nail bags from wally world or lowes or somewhere and use those to deposit your small finds in as soon as you get it dug up and don't linger in the spot to look it over. Get your hole covered up and quickly move along to your next potential spot. You can look over and cull your finds at home in privacy and the muddy nail bag can go in the washing machine if need be. (Or just dried out and brushed off) Good Luck

Metal detecting is one of the many ways to enjoy the outdoors, when camping I usually have my Garrett Ace 400 if possible. Last time I went camping I found a foundation of a hunting/fishing camp that was built around 1900. I found an old bait reel, 35 Rem. shells, brass buckle and a 1943P War Nickel. Needless to say this weekend I'm going camping there again. (yes old guys can still camp LOL) A little hint about detecting, if your detector reads the target might be less than 2 inches, before digging use your pin pointer to zero in on it because that might save you from digging more than you need to. HAPPY DIGGING
@johnberry2877
@johnberry2877 4 жыл бұрын
A shovel type digger is fine when digging targets in your own yard or in a field. However, for the preservation of the hobby, I strongly recommend a small hand held digger and some practice in digging without leaving a trace. Some busy body will surely raise Cain when seeing you excavating with a small shovel in a public park and subsequently going to the authority's and venting.
@WayneTheSeine
@WayneTheSeine 4 жыл бұрын
Yep..... a trowel and a long flat tip screw driver and sometimes you can just pop that baby out of the hole with the driver. Soccer fields, rodeo bleachers, volley ball pits and ball parks are target rich environments but you must use not leave a trace.

I don't know if it's been said but if you ground balance both your detector and your pinpointed you will get the best results. Your owners manual will tell you how. I'm a Whites guy or I would tell you. I do know if you turn on your pinpointed while holding it in the dirt away from targets it will ground balance. The detector you will have to hold one of the buttons and pump the coil up and down from 1"to 10"'s off the ground. Doing that eliminates the ground as a signal and makes the target metal the focus. Enjoy it's a great hobby

I bought an old White's detector quite a few years ago. There is an art to learning to use one (you can buy a fishing pole, but that doesn't make you Bill Dance). I was metal detecting in a state park once, finding good stuff, thought I was in detecting heaven, Until the park police drove buy and over the car speaker informed me, I wasn't allowed to metal detect in a state park. Problem I have with metal detecting is finding a place to go.
@rockytopwrangler2069
@rockytopwrangler2069 4 жыл бұрын
Of course depending on what state , some have policies that do allow detecting,, just have to look into management of parks first. And some that allow it ,, the security people don't know of permission allowed .. Like everything it's all about communication... In some states law enforcement will confiscate your detector and tools,and write violation tickets,, and it might be completely legal to be there ,, they just don't know the rules/laws regarding detecting and you have to go through the aggravation and time and personal expense to teach them what their employment didn't.......Just as everything these days,, it's all about $$ ,, they may have a permit that allows detecting but you have to obtain it on your own....just like a fishing license...just be safe..

@rockytopwrangler2069

...that totally true ,, it's surprising What's on the surface ,, someone sitting under a tree may have a "pocket spill" ,, in long grass,, use something like a large bent fork and comb the grass at the signal...not only coins, and keys , but I have found some pretty nice small pocket knives ....

Thanks for posting! So learning your detector cost .41 cents. Go out to your yard with a post hole digger, lay out a quarter, dime, nickle and a penny about 2 feet away from each. You may want to go so far as to use silver coins if thats what you want to find. Record each signal with the coins on top of the ground. Next did a hole with the post hole digger a few inches put the coin in cover and pack the dirt. Record each coin at that depth. Dig holes deeper and repeat until coins are not detectable.
@DavidCanterbury
@DavidCanterbury 4 жыл бұрын
I like that in theory and did a few tests with this at the house but I also realize the signals and tones can be different in the field depending on other nearby items or whether the coin is even laying flat in the hole, so I wanted some real life stuff as well, knowing that most of what I find would be worth little but would still be actual ground targets as they may be later-

Ya, as always, your millage may very. Happy to see you getting to know your detector. I dont expect to get rich detecting but I would like it to pay for itself. Have you seen the Gold monster 1000?
