I love painting furniture. I refuse to paint antiques unless they are heavily damaged and need repair to a degree that can't be repaired and keep the nice wood veneer, etc. Also, do not use oven cleaner to strip furniture, use Citristrip or Blue Bear soy gel stripper. Very safe chemicals for what they do.

Painting of good quality furniture hurts my soul! Antiques and MCM being “farmhouse flipped” is the worst. If you want to paint your own furniture, go for it, but people need to stop scooping up quality pieces and flipping for resale. Pretty soon it’s going to be difficult to find beautiful wood pieces because they’ll all have a coat of Dixie Belle on them. If you’re going to paint furniture, do your research first and know what you’ve got. Grandma’s Broyhill Brasília China hutch is worth a lot more in its original condition than it is with a coat of chalk paint. If my furniture is sold off, after I die to a furniture flipper, I’m coming back and haunting them. I wouldn’t be evil. I’d put burnt toast crumbs in their butter, mix peanut butter in the jelly, put Nair in their shampoo bottle, (ok that one is kind of evil).

One of my favorite rooms in the house is my grandmother in laws old dining room set(table, china cabinet, and buffet). It’s “outdated” cherry, but it is REAL wood and so much sturdier than any modern piece of crap I could purchase within my budget. 🤷🏼♀️

Hi Garrett, As a paint & Decorator of 25 yrs I hate (yes hate!) seeing people ruin beautiful antiques by painting them. These people have no idea on how to treat the old timber or how to look after it and as for the oven cleaner...NO! As you said, happily go paint the yellow pine but please leave the antiques and old wood furniture alone because it's worth more as it is than after it's had a tonne of cheap paint slapped all over it.

LOVED this video! It wasn't antique, but about 10 years ago, I just about cried when my mom painted a TEAK storage bench from my childhood room! TEAK! That said, painting wood is something I notice people arguing about all the time. Some people believe wood should never be painted, while others would go ahead and paint Queen Victoria's tea table if they could. Have you ever done (or would you consider doing) a video specifically on what is worth preserving, what can be refinished without losing historical or aesthetic value, and what is okay to paint? I am all for saving worthy pieces, but some folks do get up in your grill over painting mass-produced Sears catalogue repros, for example, even when it's something that could be stripped down later....
@GarrettLeChic3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dodie! It's my opinion that all fine and exotic woods should be preserved and never painted. The only exception is if refinishing experts agree the furniture is in such bad condition, it can't be refinished or preserved. I've said that is a few videos now so I probably won't address it again for a while.

Garrett, I so, so agree with your comments about painting antique furniture. I have recently had a horrible revelation. I'm working on updating my will and want to figure out who should receive particular things I own. One of those things is a unique rocking chair designed and produced by a timber craftsman here in Australia. He made the most beautiful furniture out of local timbers. Some of those timbers are now unavailable. We bought the chair as an anniversary present for ourselves because we love its shape and style. I asked my daughter if it is something she would like when we die, she said "yes, but I've got to tell you, I'll paint it". Once I'd recovered from the fainting attack and picked my jaw up off the floor, I made a note that she should never be bequeathed that chair. I don't know where I went wrong! I've raised a barbarian! I'd rather see it sold to someone who would love it than see it painted.

Always great advice and you're also funny. I think these "influencers" have been peeking in my windows. My home is 180 yrs old so the kitchen doesn't easily meet modern living. We added shelving into an antique armoire where we store all the pots/pans and most dishes (we also use a pie safe for the food). We're currently in the process of converting a TV armoire into a wet bar. Ours have the doors that slide in because we didn't want our drunk friends handing on the doors. We're adding a small sink and a fridge. It took us about 5 years to find one that would accommodate what we wanted (and still look like an antique). We also try to upcycle where possible. During renovations, we had to remove some damaged flooring. It's heart pine, 6 inches wide and 1 inch thick. We had it planed. It will use it for our kitchen island top.

Watching this video and then being SO glad I am not on social media! Who comes up with this stuff?! Painting a piece of beautiful wood antique furniture is the worst idea EVER. Some of the KZbin channels have done this successfully, however, with inexpensive reproductions that have turned out nicely, but they are professionals, not DIYers. The Restoration Hardware look of bare or stripped repurposed lumber can get old really fast... not my style. That reminds me of college days and the Berkeley Bookcase of bricks and boards. Been there, done that. I'd rather haunt a thrift store or estate sale and rescue a long loved but slightly abused piece and bring it back to its former glory. I still want that table behind you in your video. Thanks, Garrett!

I saw one from a lovely lady that usually does trash to treasure but she did this singer sewing machine cabinet by separating a working gorgeous ornate antique sewing machine from the matching original cabinet and sliced a section out to make it smaller then covered it in her signature white chalk paint. Quite a few folks found it hard to watch. I did too. Thank you for speaking to trends that have gotten out of hand because we only have a few working survivors and if some fall into hands that won't restore them we'll have even fewer.

Another fantastic video. Found myself nodding along to everything! With you on the furniture painting - one of my pet hates! Another thing that baffles me with some of these furniture 'makeovers' is that in additon to the paint, people will remove or cover up all the detailing and trim from older pieces to make them look 'modern'. I can't understand taking an interesting vintage piece and then making it look like something you picked up from IKEA or some other big-box store. I do have to confess I've painted a fair few furniture pieces in my time, but they were almost all old, tired-looking IKEA pieces which I've now given a new life. I would never paint an antique or anything with a good quality wood finish. My favourite refinished piece is an old IKEA chest of drawers which I repainted in a gorgeous ochre chalk paint, sanding down the top to the bare pine and varnishing it and replacing the drawer knobs with some lovely ceramic ones. It fits my style so much better and you'd never guess it was originally IKEA.

That being said I have only ever used oven cleaner a few times in my commercial ovens and even then I did not like using it. When I need to clean my home oven dawn dish soap works just fine with out all the toxic fumes. The other ovens were for a job and I was required to use it. I dont keep heavily toxic things in my house because I have kids even though they are old enough to not touch things like my laundry pods and the bleach I still try to keep it to a minimum. I can only think that oven cleaner much like lysol would absolutely ruin good wood.

Hey Garrett… I love the piano music intro… I loved when you did the magnifying glass close-up thing a couple of videos ago - so hilarious… like you are a ‘designer detective’!! Take care and keep it going😀

What a neat video! The best design trends you mentioned are certainly something to consider. I never thought of using upper cabinets for a console table!

Omg Maritza, I'm with you in the glam. I don't mind real glam furniture and decor as much as I despise DIY GLAM 🤢. Like, I'm not going to tell you your DIY glitter paint canvas and your hot glued rhinestones on your DIY mirrored furniture looks good! Glam can actually be done tastefully, but covering _everything_ in glitter, rhinestones, metallic spray paint and furry fabric isn't the way to do it.

@@ophilianecr Amen my friend, now how do we inform these poor souls...hummm I myself love French decor but not over the top add a little modern touches and simple clean look . Im just so darn happy I came across your channel.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s, it was still popular to have your kids baby shoes bronzed - then use them as decor in the living room. I cannot believe I did this. WHY??? There's no undoing it - no going back. Everyone should think twice about permanently altering anything valuable or that has deep sentimental attachment, no matter what the trend-setters do.

I had never even heard of that pool noodle business- not for me- but I love that for them (not really) ]🤣🤣 More seriously about people messing with older furniture pieces.... is anyone mindful that some of the finishes on those can be super toxic? Just like older homes... I also question the safety and durability of epoxy. Yes-i have been debating doing it in a friend's condo on his awful 80/90s wood trimmed laminate (blegh). Ps he doesn't see anything wrong with them or the horrible honey oak cabinets (blegh blegh). But... not everything- even if it is relatively durable- is kitchen safe-ie food prep etc. Love this video- most of it I had no idea was even a thing. I like the sideboard and coffee table ideas. Not sure where I'd use them but great for the right needs! Thank you so much you're always so fun to watch Garrett!

I am soooo thankful you mentioned that awful trend of painting over antiques made from beautiful wood. I also don’t like that partially painted partially refinished furniture….the ones with refinished wood drawers and painted sides and top. I understand some antiques are made of a cheap, not so hot wood or the piece is way too damaged to attempt to repair and, in those cases, painting could be the best option. But I am die hard wood person.

My mom and I once picked up a really cruddy cabinet (it was from someone's chicken house or something like that) painted with a greasy black paint. The fastest way to strip it was to use lye. Super dangerous, but we had nothing to lose and it was really effective. Long story short, we made something cute out of a disgusting scrap of furniture.
@GarrettLeChic2 жыл бұрын
It’s great you made something wonderful but I definitely would never recommend anyone use lye or other toxic chemicals. Honestly, I recommend getting a professional involved when something could be unsafe for a lay person. I would never even attempt it. I just don’t want you or anyone to ever get hurt or sick. Safety is always first. 😊😊😊

Another wonderful and witty video, Garrett!!! I love your esthetic to elevate things to the best or repurposed version of themselves! Builder grade tile and cabinets can be elevated to be more beautiful. Tampering with beautiful wood and natural stone pieces often doesn't elevate them, but takes away character and beauty. One of my pet peeves in social media decorating is the over-decorating of spaces! Couches with 12 pillows, and every chair with a pillow AND a throw makes me hyperventilate! Another pet peeve is painting rooms all black. Seriously? Maybe one black wall would look cool, but a whole room??? PLEASE!!! Thank you for taking us on your journey to elevate our spaces to their most beautiful selves!!! Colleen

I don't know what happened but I had to resubscribe to your channel. I thought you had stopped. I came across it again so I subscribed. So glad I did. Enjoyed this video same as all the others in the past. I found a side/ buffet table on side walk trash. Snapped it up, took it home and refurbished it. Painted it light yellow and white to match my Hoosier (1925/30) Cabinet ( yellow &white). They both look wonderful in my dinning room. The pulls on the buffet are the same as my Klimt copy of "LE BAISER" (The Kiss) art piece. Looks real cool.

Never heard of using pool noodles. In Australian they use the cardboard toilet rolls 🤣. I just finished picking - with my thumbnail - white paint off a beautiful old brass piece. I’m not particularly brass per se but loved this piece. Why anyone would paint it white (very badly I might add.) I must add I cannot even afford a granite counter top. Just appalled. Loved you show Garrett.
