Here in Denmark, everyone only has white on white in their homes. My home is dark woods, green sofa, tiffaniy lamps and books everywhere. My girlfriends have told me about a million times, that I should paint my beautiful wooden furniture white and get a little more light in my home. I will not do it! In fact, my home is so different from other Danish homes, that there was once a theater that did a theater performance in my living room, because of the atmosphere here. I love my cozy cave.

Your home sounds WONDERFUL to me. I also don't go for trends. I have traditional tastes and have lots of color and a cozy vibe in our home. Our focal point in our living room is our wonderful woodburning fireplace which we use all winter (it's cold here in central New York State!) Cozy, colorful, and warm are for me. And books! Lots of books!

I am not following this no furniture against the walls. I live in an apt of 720sqf with 2 kids. There simply is no room to push sofa, bed, desk and whatnots 4-6 inches of the wall. Instead I made sure to have nice wooden legs on all my furniture so that it gives the illusion of big rooms. The biggest change you can make in a room is to make sure light gets in, so open those curtains during the day.

I feel like sometimes the problem with interior design advice is that there's a difference between how you design your house to live in/entertain in, and how you stage your house for social media or sale. For example, if I was staging my living room, I would take out one of the sofas, put in some chairs and move the furniture off the wall. But to live in, there are two sofas so everyone is comfy and they're pushed against the wall so the kids have space for their toys and the clumsy dogs don't bump into everything. I'm sure a lot of influencers have big houses with beautiful staged rooms, and still very nice, but more comfortable and practical rooms they actually use. For the rest of us we can move things around if we want pretty photos, and then move them back after!

I love how you tell us about the big picture, and focus on sustainable and authentic interiors. Also, the sofa against the wall, I saw my parents' sofa go from being in the middle of the living room to pushed against a wall. That decision, my mother made some time ago, makes the room more open and gives space for additional seating without the area feeling cramped. Keep dishing out that good advice!

*Sofa Against the Wall* . I had no "dedicated" entry area which lands you directly into the Living Room. I created separate spaces by using the back of the sofa with a console table. The space now has defined zones and looks completely different than the way the previous owner had it styled.

Thank you for your flexibility on rugs. Very sensible. I am allergic to wool, and will never be able to have a wool rug. I'm OK with it, and am frankly weary of designers telling me that, in essence, synthetic-fiber rugs are of Satan. Nope. I will also never have jute rugs larger than a welcome mat because I can't stand walking over that scratchy, bumpy, surface in my stocking feet. I would love to have a silk rug, but currently cannot afford the silk rug of my dreams. Synthetic fibers it is.

What I love most about YOUR channel, Garrett, (besides Albert!) is how your videos are true and real TUTORIALS---you TEACH, and regardless of the topic, there is always something of value to absorb and take away. No offense to the myriad of other designer vloggers, but the vast majority of them will only showcase their OWN particular aesthetic/tastes and elaborate on them and nothing else until the 'cows come home' No matter what a person's design 'vibe' happens to be, they will learn from YOU. Refreshing and engaging. These other vloggers can honestly learn from you, Garrett. :)

Thank you for explaining LRV with some real science. As a physicist the reason 0 is still white is because white paint has diffuse reflection (light scattering in many directions) Vs a mirror with specular reflection (all light waves lined up). So 0 could still be white. Your advice is fab thank you!

You nailed it with this video! ❤ I once had an interior designer suggest a very expensive rug to me. I told her it wasn’t a good idea in our household, with 4 children and 2 dogs. She was adamant that messes could be removed with sparkling water. I’m sure that works in other households, but I knew I would be more comfortable with a washable rug. So glad I went with that instead!

I especially appreciate the one about pushing furniture up against the wall. We have a small living room, and if the furniture weren’t up against the wall it will just all be clumped in the middle of the room. Another piece of design advice I have heard and don’t follow is to never put your bed on the same wall as the door. Well good grief, bedrooms often only have one wall that make sense to put a bed against. In our master bedroom, one wall has the door to the hallway on the side, and that’s the wall of the bed is against. that’s because the other walls are one with French doors leading onto the deck, a wall with a huge window across from the bed, and the wall with the doors to the bathroom in the closet. There is literally no other wall I could put the bed against.

I have used the LRV for paint a different way. I can hear you say 'what a cowboy!' When finding coordinating colors for trim and accents, etc. it might be helpful to get a range of lights and darks. When questioning, try some contrast with around a 10+ LRV difference. Well, maybe you don't need the LRV to see if the color is light or dark. But, not a bad point of reference before getting samples.

Yes to everything you said today, Garrett. Three comments: 1) What helped me with choosing the wall colour was thinking about what I wanted it to do in the space - I wanted to be white but I also wanted it to fight the gray light of the city I live in, keep the mood in my home as warm as possible, and reflect the tones of the furniture. So, I chose a shade of white whose undertones matched the opholstery of my furniture, and it works like magic. 2) Sometimes, I wonder if influencers who advise people never to push their furniture against the wall have ever worked with a 50-square meter flat, multi-function rooms, or long and narrow spaces. Maybe you can address these complicated spaces more, some of us would be truly grateful.3) And thank you for showing us a real bookshelf when talking about rugs! I don't know if it is in your home or in someone else's but it is gorgeous.

And the same colour paint looks different in every room! Also I couldn’t predict how my paint would look with the tiles we chose … so now every area with tiles in it has a completely different colour as the light reflected off the tiles changed the colour of the walls … 😮 It was such an oh moment. Paint colour is different on every wall and is very unique to your own home! Such good advice Garrett. Love to the boys!!🐾🐾🐾

People in my community are putting Plantation Shutters in their (new) houses. I never liked those things and they certainly don't fit my style. Maybe their " trendy", I don't know. All I know is I am glad they're in their house not mine. "Love that for them". 😂

I loved all your rug advice. I’m about to make a couple deciding ideas on rugs. My two bedroom recliners have a pretty bucle material I love. Thank you so much again Garrett !

This is wonderful advice, as usual, Garrett! I think what you are teaching us about design is so much more meaningful than where to find and how to but the latest trendy items. You're teaching us to curate our spaces in a way that represent us, are very functional, that will stand the test of time, and that we can love! LOVE THAT FOR EVERYONE!!! 🥰👏🥰 Colleen

Garrett, such great advice, as always! I agree with you on LRVs. Although I look at LRVs, I still rely more on how the swatches look on my walls at different times of the day. We recently painted our living room "Navajo White" by Benjamin Moore, and it's by far my most favorite creamy, off-white wall color. 😊

I recently found your channel and can’t stop watching. Your videos are so pleasing, I like how you explain things. I also like that even though I personally disagree with some things, you don’t make me feel bad about it. We like what we like, some things I’m indifferent to, and that’s ok. Good to see an interior designer with more of a classic taste rather than these really modern designs. Your home must be so comfortable!

I love your channel. I love decor and am aware of trends but really decorate with what I love, adopting some of the trends that speak to me and make me smile. That’s why I am so in love with the content of your videos. You have great taste and go with what you like and not like the masses. We don’t need to copy everyone else.

A very good good morning Garrett, First of all I have only one influencer and that’s YOU🥰 Secondly awwwdorable Albert Happy Happy 19th♥️ Last but not the least thank you very much for such an open mind session and also calling out the one size fits all design advices out there!! I have for sure rejected the design advice of putting the couch to the wall in my second living room aka teen retreat, as my teen loves to be also on the floor dreaming and drawing, so I pushed the daybed closer to the wall not compromising her leisure earth time:) You just won my heart again 😍by your so humble and human nature and professional advices and incorporating every one from different social status. Last year when I was doing my home, I have seen so many different videos of designer but never even saw twice or ever subscribed but I am so glad that I bumped into your video and I checked your second video where you requested to subscribe and you are the only one KZbin person whom I am subscribed to, and every time I am so glad at my wise decision😍 Gorgeous person you have a gorgeous happening week ahead!! Hey Garrett, thanks for another great video, and happy birthday to Albert the Awesome! If you ever feel so inclined, I'd love a video on how to work with different wood tones. I inherited dark, cherry toned pieces, and would enjoy advice on how to integrate them into my home. I really appreciate you, thanks again!!
