Honestly, I think one thing the Modern games could learn from Advance 2 is how the boost implemented. In Advance 2 instead of tapping a button to do the boost, you actually have to collect rings and build speed, which of course are the two main things associated with the Sonic brand. It’s more about earning speed than just hitting a “go fast” button, it really reminds me of the flow and the reward of speed from the classic games. I would love to see this replicated in a new Modern game and fan games like Green Hill Paradise Act 2 and Sonic Islands have proven that it could work in 3D.

the point of the boost in modern games is to serve as an attack and speed shield. the boost doesn't make you go too much faster, but the point was to have a dash move. the boost mode in advance 2 is basically the speedcap like the super peel out from CD or the boost mode afterimage in Rush. everything is perfect the way it is, let there be balance.

Fun fact: at the end of the level when you run past the goal, you're actually supposed to BRAKE to get more points than to keep running past. Give it a try.

I like both of them, but you can't compare any of the Advance games. All three of them have only an artstyle and a title in common. Sonic Advance 1 is basically a classic Sonic game. Sonic Advance 2 is a precursor to the boost formula. Sonic Advance 3 is most similar to Knuckles Chaotix.

Yes you can. You can compare the gameplay and see whether or not the new additions improve the gameplay, if the levels are designed better, or if the bosses are better.

Respectfully both yes and no. Yes in the fact that BECAUSE they are the series for advance, you can judge them on how well they utilized the GBA's designs and what they add to the line of GBA's capabilities to handle Sonic. No in the fact that one game doesn't really have a connection to the next (if you take off Advance 2 or 3 you would hardly be able to tell they were a series together). The fact that they take the core of the games and change them could make them viewable as three standalone games, and when taken that game each IS able to stand up on its own. I personally agree with you for the most part, but KC3&K does bring a very valid point that's worth addressing. Lets also not forget the Sonic community (not anyone in this comment thread in particular but in general) compare the old 2D to the 3D all the time anyway (inbetween the fan art of course =P ).

Unpopular opinion time! I honestly think this game has the best bosses in the series. They force you to stay on your toes, and react fats, while also always making you decide between going on the offensive to attack, or staying back to nab oncoming rings before making your move. I can understand why these bosses aren’t for everyone, but I think they do a great job at exemplifying Sonic’s speed during combat.

@@redbool1115 Sonic 4 Episode 1 had terrible physics. Sonic 4 Episode 2 had better physics than Episode 1, and the Advance series is made by Dimps too, so if you think of Sonic 4, remember Sonic Advance 1-3, and just ask, "How could they have gone wrong?"

@@dolomite1067 Oh that's an easy one the project was given hardly any money meaning to cut cost had Dimps to reuse the Sonic Rush Engine which was build for the Boost formula and doesn't work all that well with Classic Sonic like level design. That and apparently were the also requested to pander to nostalgia hard with Sonic 4. So beside the over use of the Homing attack in level design are most of 4's issues born out of executive decisions done behind closed doors.

I agree, this is definitely the best Advance game, and easily the most underrated one. I love and how fast and fluid it is tbh. My only issue with the game tbh is the special rings, they can frick themselves. And the fact you have to get Emeralds with EVERY character to 100% the game... Other than that though, it's pretty grand. Also, underrated opinion: Sky Canyon and Techno Base are my favourite zones.

I never had 1 or 3, but this game was my favorite of all time as a kid. I remember 100% completing the game and resetting at least 3 times. I loved the running bosses, they’re some of my favorite boss fights in any 2D platformer. The merry-go-round was actually my favorite.

It might not be the best Advance title, but holy crap it's just filled to the brim with style. Those animated cutscenes look pretty sick, the animations Sonic has in-game are really smooth and the trick system is awesome. I had no idea Sonic Rush Adventure's Sonic was just his Advance 2 self, huh.

I always interpreted it as Knuckles being trapped inside the boss cockpit. It looks like he's punching the glass to try and escape. I don't think he's operating the controls because Eggman doesn't have an animation like that.

Alright, done with the video now... I got a LOT of laughs out of this. Thanks, Garrulous! I have to say, I agree about the Special Rings... As much as I like the challenge, 1. This kind of challenge would be better for unlocking something completely optional like Hyper Sonic, and 2. If they were going to do THAT, they should've made the stages a LOT better level design-wise. I like the idea of getting a group of collectibles all in one life on paper, but it requires some sort of AMAZING level design (and character movement) in practice to feel challenging but also fair and not frustrating to the player.

I got an idea for a Super Mario 3D World mod based off of Sonic Advance 2: At the start of the game, Sonic is running along with Tails and Knuckles close behind. After they rescue Cream, Cream explains to them that Eggman has kidnapped her mom along with a family of flickies. So Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles set off with Cream to rescue her mom and the flickies. The first seven worlds are based off of the seven zones in Sonic Advance 2. World 1 is based off of Leaf Forest Zone, World 2 is based off of Hot Crater Zone, World 3 is based off of Music Plant Zone, World 4 is based off of Ice Paradise Zone, World 5 is based off of Sky Cannon Zone, World 6 is based off of Techno Base Zone, and World 7 is based off of Egg Utopia Zone. Each level in the game is designed in a way in which while you have the option to run straight to the end of the level, you also have the option of going around and exploring the level. The player set up in this mod is similar to that of the player set up in Super Mario 3D World. At the end of each final level in the first six worlds, you free one of the flickies. As a gratitude, each of the flickies would open up a portal to the next zone. At the end of World 7, you free Cream's mom. However, just when you think you have beaten the game and Sonic and company can call it a day, Eggman shows up in the Super Egg Robo Z which inhales the flickies and Cream's mom and flies away. Tails, Knuckles, and Cream become very distraught because they felt there is no way to stop Eggman now. Sonic tells them they need to keep fighting for the flickies, Cream's mom, and the world. At that moment, a special ring conveniently appears. When Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Cream go into the ring, it takes them to World 8 which is basically Eggmanland in space split up into 8 different levels. Each of the first seven levels has one of the Chaos Emeralds. You need to collect all of the Chaos Emeralds to unlock the final level. The final level has you fight all of the bosses you faced in the game. It then leads to a chase scene where you need to outrun the Super Egg Robo Z while it throws its attacks at you. When you reach the end of the stage, you see a capsule containing the flickies and Cream's mom. But before you can open the capsule, the Super Egg Robo Z inhales it and flies away. Knowing they must stop Eggman at all costs, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Cream power themselves up with the Chaos Emeralds and go after the Super Egg Robo Z. The battle against the Super Egg Robo Z is a cross between the one in Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Advance 2's true final boss. After you defeat the Super Egg Robo Z, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Cream grab hold of the capsule, lower it to the ground, and free Cream's mom and the flickies. Cream's mom thanks Sonic and company for saving them and the game's story reaches its conclusion. After you complete the main game, you unlock a bonus world where you get to play as Amy. To unlock each of the levels in the bonus world, you need to collect a certain amount of pink rings which are found in each of the levels in the main game.

I actually tested that once - I went through the stages of Advance 2, and all individual stage always had less than 10, sometimes less than 5 occurrences of having to do anything other than holding right... this really _is_ where "hold right to win" became true. At least until later in the game, where it just becomes Dick Move City.

Sonic Advance 1: Closest to the classics. Pretty good all around but a bit short. Sonic Advance 2: Doubles the Speed and doubles the fun. Bosses are not so good tho. Sonic Advance 3: a balance between the last 2 + continues the story of Sonic Battle. Pretty good, but it drags a bit too much.

i just noticed that all the sonic 1 zones have been reincarnated or just part of a zone in this game leaf forest zone is yet another green hill remake, hot crater zone is basically marble zone if it was fun, music plant zone has bumpers everywhere like spring yard, sky canyon zone has see saws and lots of pits like starlight zone, techno base is literally scrap brain if it was a disco party and it had less murder, and there are no water zones so labyrinth zone doesn't exist here

Good review, but you have a lot to learn on how to play Sonic Advance 2. Especially the bosses. I can do the first boss within 8 seconds. I've even done Ice Paradise boss within 4 seconds! Haha... I'm a year late, but I want to say a few things: -Do long videos. They're a lot of fun to sit down and watch! Especially on you're channel since you're fun to listen to. -Did you know after the goal post you're supposed to press in the opposite direction to stop as soon as possible? You'll get more points for it, but you still want to pass it going as fast as possible! I didn't know that until way later either.

I remembered back when I saw that Advance 2 trailer on the Mega Collection. I only had Advance 3 at the time, so I was dying to get my hands on the prequels, especially 2. Nowadays after playing all three, I think this is the weakest of the three. That’s not saying it’s bad the game’s still good, but the speed is really the only thing that the game got going for it. P.S. some of the bosses and the chaos emerald system can die in a fire.

This was interesting. I think making these longer can be better for the pacing. That way, you can spend a good amount of time on each zone, and don't have to condense your thoughts on any just to fit within a time limit. Ultimately, I think you should just make these videos as long as feels appropriate for the topic you're discussing. As for the game itself, I understand how a focus on speed might sound good for a Sonic game, but 2D Sonic can't really thrive on that alone, and I feel that the focus on speed in Sonic Advance 2 is to the game's detriment. I have a similar issue with plain ol' Sonic 2 as well. I think putting too much emphasis on speed harms the level design, because each level ends up being designed for going fast first, and the other important aspects of Sonic level design become just an afterthought. That of course is to say nothing of the way special stages were handled. I think I know what they were going for though. I think the designers wanted players to plan out routes through each stage so they would grab each medal in one straight shot. In practice however, it just ends up clashing with the speed focused gameplay, because to plan routes around the medals, you have to know where they are first, and even then, some of them are placed in spots that require you to completely break your flow, which is also at odds with the speed focus. I could say more about it, but this comment is getting long as is, and if I were to go further, I'd probably be better off just writing a review of the game myself. I suppose I'll end this by saying that I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the game, and I look forward to your inevitable Sonic Advance 3 video.

The comment on megaman made me think, sonic and megaman both are blue heroes that beat up robots to stop an evil dr and the dr always gets away. I know there not too similar but hey the similarity's are there.

A BIT annoying? Yeah, no. The Ice Paradise boss is easily one of the worst bosses in the game. And... I actually found the Egg Utopia one pretty fun with the gravity mechanics. Anyway, nah. Advance 2 is my least liked of the trilogy honestly. The title of best goes to Adv3. And if there's ONE THING that definitely took away that title, it was the Special Rings. I fucking hate them. And then, when I actually get to a Special Stage, it's... Annoying. And hard. And I hate them too. I never could beat this game legitimately (without cheats) fully because of THOSE.

Same. Plus, the way to obtain them was fucking ridiculous. But Advance 3 was no different. I hated having to find 10 chao to unlock the Special Stage. Then again, Sonic Advance.... Let that one sink in...
