Darkplace was a comedic gem, superbly written, acted and directed. It deserved far greater success than it received.

Good video. I think when it first aired it got good reviews but low viewing figures (Channel 4 even cancelled a week-long repeat of the episodes for undisclosed reasons). Those who watched it either fell in love with it or genuinely had no idea what they were watching. Word of mouth led to an eventual belated DVD release, which slowly helped its cult grow.

It is pretty wild something so in tune with modern comedic sensibilities was made all the way back in 2004 - audiences werent ready for it!
@ianmcmillan27628 ай бұрын
@@hassledvania it'd definitely have more chance of success if made now. I always feel like Matthew Holness and Alice Lowe should have had the same level of recognition as Aoyade and Berry... very underrated writers/directors/performers

I remember taking the bus to Plymouth and buying the dvd after only seeing one episode late at night, and I wasn't even paying attention to the TV until the man got buggered by an eyeball.

Soooo late to the party but you produced an excellent piece here. Such a classic show.. Half 9 or 10pm on a Thursday night, if I remember correctly. Used to dash back from work with the girlfriend to watch it.

I absolutely LOVED this Show when it 1st aired in The States! An Homage yet at the same time a Lampoon of 80s Anthology Horror... Creating a sense of nostalgia for something that didn't exit... Genius! Similar to some of the works of Tim & Eric... though then tend to be far more self-aware!

The algorithm decided to hand feed me this video today and i really hope it gets more people to watch Dark Place. Watched it all in one night and was laughing my ass off the entire time. Definitely nailed what makes it so good and so funny. I think a lot of parody misses the mark by not going all in or just not really seeming genuine about the genre being parodied. Dark Place has that passion behind it because of the layers of writing and creating a universe around the fake show. Even with purposefully 'so bad its good' media there needs to be some type of genuineness behind it to pull it off

Found this a few months back looking up other shows Richard Aoyode had been in. It was such a happy time as I binged the sadly to short 6 episodes and even went through all the commentary tracks. I guess in a way it’s good it is such a short ride that left me wanting more. I think the cast is the magic of this show. Matt Berry being in it was another plus. He can pull off ham acting like no one else. I agree it’s one of the few examples of intentionally bad shoes that pulls off its premise.

Sadly, I keep going back to the six episodes. BUT they do remembrance shows. Just KZbin the fake actors’s name. Nice comment.

🎉The ongoing joke. Earlier episodes >.. … it is “what’s a dreamweaver” Q What’s a Dreamweaver? A. Same as a wind chime. NOW > Garth is a dreamweaver. The gift of a writer’s mind.

The earnestness behind stuff that doesn't work is why I often enjoy bad videogames, no one sets out to make a bad game on purpose. Clearly someone tried something somewhere, and whether it had time or budget issues, they did their best with what they could do. Also for really obscure ones there is practically no information on them online so it has a real feeling of discovery to me. Like "They Came From the Skies" on ps2, an aerial shooter about 1960s planes fighting UFOs that's really rough, but that I'm enjoying despite that.

A season 2 was planned but it didn't get picked up again due to poor ratings which annoyingly was down to Channel 4 putting it on at something like 23:30 on a Wednesday. Whoever took that decision I can only hope took a series of screwdrivers to the torso. Terrortome is excellent and I am about to start Incarcerat soon.
