Watch Gary Hamel, celebrated management thinker and author and co-founder of the Management Innovation eXchange (MIX), make the case for reinventing management for the 21st century. In this fast-paced, idea-packed, 15-minute video essay, Hamel paints a vivid picture of what it means to build organizations that are fundamentally fit for the future-and genuinely fit for human beings. It's time to radically rethink how we mobilize people and organize resources to productive ends. Here's how we start.

"Human beings have the essential qualities that many of our organisations lack"... superb quote Gary! What a powerful thought that the way we manage companies has not being innovated significantly for more than 100 years.

It's not about getting other companies to listen. It's about creating our own companies that employ these ideas. We can't change other people, but we can change ourselves and the things we control.

There's a team of 21 people responsible for animation, if you watch the credits. I think he presented in front of a blank background and it has all been animated in post-production.

Great presentation but I would add that innovation does not always happen because of effective management. Henry Ford long thought of the automobile prior to the concept of management. Because of his innovation, the assembly line was formed (effective management). I will concede that if you are stating innovation requires effective management than effective management requires innovation and if that is the point of your presentation; I get it.

The REAL question is "How do we get companies to listen and employ this point of view?" As far as I can see, not too many will be so accomodating in giving up their rigid heirachies and top-down authority.

You have to have a management that will not fire you or punish you, for pointing out silly/stupid decisions they are making... So it has to start with management.. companies have hundreds of people ready to point out the silly/stupid decisions...

Some interesting points but just can't get over the patriarchal overtones - Male presenter presents male management pioneers of the early 20th century and male management pioneers of the 21st century. Groundbreaking.

I disagree. I think that you might be basing your argument on experiences that you have on management that was invented 120 years ago. He is saying that as a manager you have the ability to incorporate these new cutting edge ideas into your management style and change what it means to manage a business. It will not happen over night and not every idea is golden but he is trying to encourage folks to not be afraid of trying or change.
