The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Sullivan always had live performances. The billboard outside said it was live and people paid to watch (unlike the multitude of R&R TV programs that followed). How would you like to pay to see a performer in concert and it turned out they were lip-synching?
@robomaster4882
@robomaster4882 Жыл бұрын
@@DPJ59 No, they have cords and mikes to make them look plugged in and live. Can you hear the kettle drums in the mix? Do you see any on stage? Ed did generally want bands to play live but some, like this one, were not up to the task. They did play on the original recording, but it had tons of overdubs and session musicians (Leon Russel, etc.) to make it sound right. They couldn't recreate that live.

It's weird how I know so much 1960s and 1950s music considering I did not live in either decade. My parents never listened to oldies stations and neither did I. There is absolutely nothing special about this. The audio of this particular copy is HORRIBLE. I had a 60s TV as a kid (born in 1970). Stereo TV was like 14 or 15 years after I was born. Was TV sound this bad in the 60s?

Ed Sullivan usually insisted that his guests performed live, but he did make the occasional exception. "This Diamond Ring" had too many studio tricks to be played live satisfactorily, so he allowed it to be mimed. He did the same for the Dave Clark 5 and the Mamas and the Papas.
@niceguy5015
@niceguy5015 Жыл бұрын
No excuses. Even if it ye song has bells and whistles, these musicians have great voices and can sing anything. The lip syncers were just lazy and Ed let some of them get away with It for some reason. The mamas and the papas are a good example and it’s disappointing not to hear Their real voices, just a flat recoding. An opportunity lost since really singing usually sounds better and makes the appearance memorable for the ages

@@niceguy5015 Father Jerry Lewis was the reason. He held some sway with Ed, convinced him to let the record stand in for the real thing. Heck, even as a kid watching this back in 1965 it was obvious to me. I felt it was a cheat but I loved the song back then so there ya go..

So sad... like the Hemingway story in six words: “For sale: baby shoes. Never worn.” I also think it’s sad that there are enough disputed cases of paternity that there has to be a show about it. Wouldn’t a DNA test do the same thing as this Maury Povich-style “courtroom drama”?

This wonderful song brings back one of my fondest childhood memories. When I was a young girl I would go into my mom's drawer and take out her original engagement ring to the bridal set that my dad first gave her. I would take it out of the box and gently slide it on my left ring finger, because the band had thinned in the back. It sparkled as it glistened upon my finger. I would just imagine someday that this diamond ring can be something beautiful ... And this diamond ring can be dreams that are coming true... So if you've got someone's whose love is true... Let It shine for you! How wonderful it was to pretend for just a moment... Happy Sunday... thank you for sharing! 💖

"His voice" wasn't really what you heard. Gary's voice wasn't all that good; his vocal track was "applied" to "vocal layers" (dubs). Most of GL & TP's hits (including "This Diamond Ring") were actually sung by Ron Hicklin and/or the Ron Hicklin Singers....a well-established and quite successful (for decades) group of studio session singers.

In 1965 he was giving the Beatles a run for their money with top 5 and 10s. Diamond Ring” was followed by four more Top 5 singles: “Count Me In” “Save Your Heart For Me” (originally released by Brian Hyland as the B-side of a failed single), “Everybody Loves A Clown” (which Gary started as a birthday gift for his dad), and “She’s Just My Style” (the Beach Boys sound was Gary’s suggestion). “Sure Gonna Miss Her” Green Grass” (banned in parts of the South because of the supposed lyric references to marijuana), and “My Heart’s Symphony” (also written by Hardin) all went Top 10.

Yes, Ed kicked them off due to Jim refusing to censor the lyrics to "Light My Fire." Just killed their career. Oh, wait...

Jerry Lewis was a scumbag of a father and very abusive, especially towards women. Know your facts waterhead.

written by Al Kooper and his 2 song writing partners. he wrote it it for the Drifters but they turned it down, Kooper hated it at first until the money rolled in.

Odd how when the drummer turns his head AWAY from the microphone while singing, the volume level stays exactly the same. I wonder why that is. 🤔

Like the 'American Indian' sounding keyboard interlude. The cool sounding base also adds..

I like a lot of their songs. Interesting choice of instruments for the 60s? An accordion, 2 Bass drums... I think when he stepped out from behind the drums, the performance level went up or stage presence.

I NEVER realized thay did NOT have a real organ or such...until a DAY ago..when I saw the sulivan video for "count me in"....and SAW that the the "chime sound" at the beginning of "count me in" came from that cordovox ENTORELY !!

Well, they were playing to a "pre-recorded" track produced by a professional studio group- "The Wrecking Crew". Gary Lewis was lip-synching to the singing of singer Ron Hicklin...
