That's the best lick lesson I've ever seen. I knew the video it was from before you even finished the first run. I think you've crammed more in to 3 odd mins than some people do in 20. And I'd say your speed on that particular lick is not that far of Master Moore himself, so we'll done mate. Keep rocking

I think the main reason why people love him, was the sheer raw energie in his perfomance. I'm pretty sure that he had a damn strong hand grip. Nice video btw.
@johnlannikk2701

Gary's hands were very strong, his explanation to his speed was that he used to as a kid practice on extremely high action guitars cos he could not afford good ones, and when he got a Les Paul he just took off. At age 18 he was shredding 'Felicity' on his Les Paul which blows my mind to this day. I saw him play it in 1970 with Skid Row at a college and everyone was silenced, when the set was finished you could here a pin drop.

Thanks so much for the GM lessons. All his work was exceptional and so varied over the years. Not only that, he was a good singer too. Just been listening to the track "Am I" off the Colosseum II "Electric Savage" album from 77. He had an amazing feeling and phrasing on that track. There's a slowish melodic build up but a very fast few bars in the middle that has always been out of reach for me. I keep trying though!

+mrbsred1 Then you most work on your finger independency.I had this problems too,and I am still working it.Play chromatics on all the chords starting from the first fret and you will get used.Also try playing licks slowly at first and eventually breaking them down into parts until you play them clean and fast. I hope I were useful :))

Hey, fantastic lesson. It really opened up some interesting avenues for me. One thing, I know you say Tabs are 'not your thing' if that's the case it would be good to break down the licks more slowly. The whole point of this is to teach, yes? Anyway, great. I've studied Gary Moore for a long time and it's great to see people posting lessons on his style. He was one of the greats and should most should be remembered.

Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials Yea i can hear so much of his influence in some of the great hard rock players, like John Sykes, Doug Aldrich, Zakk Wylde, especially with these type of licks, i like his hard rock stuff but much prefer his bluesy era though, its more passionate with smatterings of these super fast pentatonic licks, you get the best of both worlds, amazing player.

Nice lesson, but i have to say, that Gary Moore was (in terms of sheer speed) just above pentatonic blues licks. Back in the 80's, he used more strict alternate picking at insane speeds. For example, he could play a exceptionally clean 32th note at 140-150 bpm (and on other occassions even higher, but i don't have live recordings with good quality) and his tremolo speedpicking (alternate picking on one string) reached incredible 27-28 notes per second. It's no secret, that most modern shredders admire Gary Moore so much. He is Steve Vai's favourite guitar player.
@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials
@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials 9 жыл бұрын
Fotzkopp1980 Do you have like a "note-o-meter" or something that you measure notes with hahah? Just kidding bud. Yeah GM was a killer player for sure and even though I loved his fast licks, it's his slower melodic stuff that really sticks with me. Thanks for watching bud.
@Fotzkopp1980
@Fotzkopp1980 9 жыл бұрын
Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials Yeah, i used the "Amazing Slow Downer" to measure the notes of Gary's pieces. There is a lot of unreleased live stuff, which is (especially from a technical point of view) much better than Gary's officially released live stuff in my opinion. His playing on this unreleased live stuff sounds faster, more technical and often much more accurate to me. For example, i took the (official) live version of "Shapes Of Things" from "Emerald Aisles - Live In Ireland 1984", it was hard to measure the notes of that piece. I don't think, he did a sloppy performance, i think, most of the time he sounds just too rough and raw. It's a fact, that Gary hated it to be too clinical. Please listen to my video "Gary Moore shreds (Live 1982-87)", which contains a few shred licks including the exceptionally clean 32th note at 140-150 bpm. It's just a short demonstration. Of course, i prefer his slower melodic stuff too, songs like "Empty Rooms", "The Loner", "Sunset", "Blues For Narada", etc. are classics. All the best, mate!

Just blinded by your speed says "the budette"! You are amazing. Do you have any speed exercises? I look on your page and couldn't see any. I need some serious speed exercises before I could even dream of playing this fast.
@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials
@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials 9 жыл бұрын
licksnkicks Thanks for the kind words. Well, I know people really don't want to hear this, and I didn't for years either, but the ONLY way to play fast is to play slow! Seriously, play the lick ONLY as fast as you can play it perfectly and then slowly speed it up. Every now and then try to do faster than you're able to, just to push yourself a bit, but then go back to the speed where you're perfect. Your brain and muscles will develop a kind of memory by playing it slow so that when you start to speed up you'll find yourself just doing it and not really thinking about it. Hope that helps. cheers

Great playing! It seems to me, the speed of the minor 3rd- hammer-on-pull-off is paramount. Forearm muscle tension seems to get in the way. Any tips (thinking, left hand/arm position etc.?
@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials
@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Kawika, anytime you've got tension in your muscles, you're never going to be able to let them work. Trick is to consciously relax and let your finger go loose. Since everyone's hand is unique, you'll just have to experiment with what works best for you. Sadly, there is no "secret" to any of this stuff, it's really just perseverance and hours and hours of practice man!

As far as the rig goes, I'm using Suhr Aldrich pickups (they are awesome!) and running through an Egnater Renegade head into a Marshall 1960b cabinet with celestions. I'm using a Nova System in the loop for delays, and modulation type stuff. I actually don't think I used any delay on these GM licks because it just muddys it up. There's just a bit of amp reverb. I also used my BB Preamp, just a wee bit for extra growl! It's pretty low volume too.

I have been wanting the Doug Aldrich pickups for a very long time, but i thing you have official just sold them to me after watching some of your videos aha! what celestions are in you cab by the way? i have been unsure of whether to get a 2x12 cab for my jet city but im not sure of whether to get green backs of V30's. By the way, do you have a facebook page or anything that i could subscribe/like? :)

Hey Ty, for my sound and approach to guitar the Aldrich pups are the best I've ever heard. They are passive, but they can go from metal to real pristine and anything in between. If you get them make sure to coil split them because that adds a whole other set of possibilities. I don't know what model celestions are in my cab, I've had that thing forever, but I've heard greenbacks are the way to go now-days. Just listen real hard and go with what sounds the best to you. No facebook yet but I'm thinking about it! Thanks for watching bud.

I was doing ok until he left the high E string. The part he said is key and to practice is what I had no problem with. Maybe if there were tabs I could figure it out. Cool stuff.

*where* does the power of the pull-off come from? I find that if I use the 3 joints in the finger, I don't always get enough power to overcome the friction of the string, so the finger gets stuck on the string and kills the pull-off. I started using my wrist to induce a very slight flicking motion, which makes it easier to pull-off, though I am not sure will be able to use the wrist when playing fast licks ala Zakk Wylde etc... Do you use just the joints in the finger, or the wrist, or both? Thanks.

ubershredder1989 you don’t need too much power. It’s just a finger movement not a wrist movement. Turn up your gain on your amp and your pull offs will be louder.

I'm not sure what's happening with the video's here but I watched all three of your Gary Moore fast pentatonic blues licks and each time the first one freezes shortly into the video. Only once after several minutes did it play all the way. But all three videos are the same for me. YOU (my complements)(like Gary Moore RIP) are playing so fast that I can't follow what you are doing. Even though in 2 & 3 for section you slow it up a little. Do you have this on tab? I really have to start very slow on this even though I'm not a feeble player, it's just that I don't practice riffs this fast. I was working with a metronome for a while ramping up with triplets and 16th notes and I can see that I need to come back to that. In celebration of my finally being to buy a Gary Moore Standard LP I saw your lessons and thought I would give it a tray. I should get the new GM LP in the next 7-10 days and I'll be practicing this from early building blocks to develop more speed..... great vids! and really fast!
