KMPC. Oh, Garish. This is the voice I grew up with in the mornings as a kid. When radio comforted and inspired. He always had a satirical edge. This was Southern California at its mellow golden era. Life was good.

... and, speaking of driving... I reminded Mike Botula (news) of Gary's mentioning of him one afternoon in 1970.... Gary said on air, "...If Petula Clark married Mike Botula, her name would be Petula Botula!" And, THAT sent Mike nearly driving off the fwy on his way into the studio... :)) KMPC710 Mobile Studio (FB) jS

The lovely Mr. Gary Owens, the man with the calm, soothing voice, and a lot of kooky thoughts. You may also remember fellow California DJ Dick Whittington, who can also be heard as the prank calling DJ in the beginning of Spielberg's debut film, "Duel".

Wally - Thanks for sharing Gary with us again. I grew up in Inglewood in the 60s and 70s, Gary and the entire KMPC line-up were family favorites. Sure wish we could get that kind of radio on the air once more. Phenoork!

I still remember some of his quips all these years later! He had one after a Minnie Ripperton song, 'She has a four octave range. I have a radar range.' and a little jingle to the tune of 'Shortening Bread': When I was a little bitty baby my momma used to smack me in the cranium with an old, rotten seal back comb' Fnork indeed!

... knock me in the cranium with a rotten old steel backcomb. To the tune of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Cotton Fields Backcomb is actually a verb, not a noun... but what the krelb

I'll never forget: Dolly Parton sings "Here You Come Again". GO's intro: "Yes, here she comes again. Not a brick out of place."

Gary Owens knows how to use the unique medium of broadcast radio to its full potential. I recently heard him in a "music of your life" format program in which he proclaimed in his typical announcer's baritone, "going places and losing things". I need to look around for his "Story Lady" bits and for the coffee commercial parody, "Mrs. Yolson the coffee psycho lady".

I believe "going places and losing things" was his variation on Monitor's slogan "going places and doing things".

Gary, so sad to learn of your passing. I'll never forget playing catch with you in the KMPC parking lot. And the arrangements you made so I could watch the taping of Laugh In. And the time they had been painting the studio the morning before your show. As we were coming up to the top-of-the-hour news you came on the intercom and said you had a splitting migraine. I was 5 feet away through the glass and never knew you weren't feeling well. Your show was incredible whether you were sick or not. The mark of a true professional. As you head to heaven, show 'em how it's done. And thank you for all the kindness you showed a wet-behind-the-ears kid that got to work with the insegrevious Gary Owens.

He was the best. I was once stuck in traffic during his entire show and that three hours seemed like 30 minutes.

Gary Owen was definitely one of the greatest radio voices of all-time. He not only was successful on radio, he did numerous commercials, cartoons and he's also best known for "Laugh-In." Recently, he did all the voice overs for Antenna TV. It's a sad day in broadcasting with the death of a radio legend in Owens.

When I was living in Atlanta in the mid-80's, I heard his oldies show on WQXI 790. I listened to his witticism, the news of what back then, and his puns between songs. I don't quite get him till he introduced the Paul McCartney and Wings or maybe just Wings song, "My Love" before and after. I seem to understand what he was about or after that fuzzy warm feeling.

Gary Owens (May 10, 1934 - February 12, 2015) was an American disc jockey and voice actor. His polished baritone speaking voice generally offered deadpan recitations of total nonsense, which he frequently demonstrated as the announcer on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. Owens was equally proficient in straight or silly assignments and was frequently heard in television, radio, and commercials. He was best known, aside from being the announcer on Laugh-In, for providing the voice of the titular superhero on Space Ghost. He also played himself in a cameo appearance on Space Ghost Coast to Coast in 1998. Likewise, Owens provided the voice of Roger Ramjet on The Roger Ramjet Cartoons. He later served as voice of the over-the-air digital network Antenna TV. (more) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Owens
