So we would go and either try to scalp a good pair or pick up some standing room. Once when they were playing Seattle, we met Gary Payton's brother and he hooked us up with lower level tickets next to the family. We sat next to Mr. Payton (father) and talked with him the whole game. Very nice family and I've never forgotten that experience.

It's about individual match ups. Every player has a guy that was hard for them to guard, for whatever reason. Every player has a guy who guarded them the best. In baseball some hitters can't hit against an average pitcher but have a great avg against a HOFer. It's the same in BB. Isiah Thomas has gone on record saying that the hardest player for him to guard was Steve Colter! He's not saying that Colter was better than HOFers, it was just a tough individual match up. Kareem said the player that guarded him the best was Nate Thurmond. Bird said the player that guarded him the best was Michael Cooper. They are not implying that those guys were better than Chamberlain or Erving. If Payton says it was harder for him to guard Stockton than MJ, then it's his opinion and it's based on actual games, people will just have to accept it.

While more often than not, he is thought of as a PG, he was really more of a combo guard in a bit of the mold of many old school great combos. Oscar, Jerry, Walt Frazier, Dave Bing, Pete Maravich, Paul Westphal from previous eras. Guys like Mo Cheeks, Stockton, even Isiah, Kidd, were more conventional PG's. While they could score, you had to play Gary pretty equally to defend a shot or pass
@tommyhallum27474 жыл бұрын
I'm going to copy what someone else said about John Stockton. When Michael Jordan got the ball you knew he was going to go try to score but when Stockton had the ball what made him dangerous was he put all of his teammates in a position to score.
@TK0S34 жыл бұрын
Yeah and look how far that got him lmao. Jordan, the player you knew was going to try to score, couldn't do anything else, has 6 rings. Took out Stockton twice. Meanwhile Stockton, the player who could score but also had the ability to put his teammates in a position to score has 0. I'm being sarcastic btw, yes Stockton is a helluva PG. But the amount of shitting on Jordan just to praise Stockton is a bit laughable. As far as I remember, it was Jordan who passed the game winning shot vs Jazz that pretty much secured them the championship. So much for the guy you knew was going to try to score.

I like Steve Nash but they always rank him higher than GP and Payton did everything better with the exception of passing. In his prime he was a consistent 22-8-4.5 guy. Nash was a 17-10-3 guy. The numbers don't lie. If you count blocks and steals there is no comparison. Neither guy was a shot blocker but Gary was 2 to 1 over Nash.

pnutbutrncrackers I agree and I don't get it too! I mean I'm a Jordan fan, but I'm not offended at all, maybe 'cause I saw MJ, Stockton, Payton and all the other 90s players so I'm not surprised to hear that! MJ wasn't perfect and many players were able to defeat him many times, in the 80s in particular when the Bulls were an average team! Stockton himself said that MJ was one of the hardest player to guard but he never said MJ was the hardest to guard, again there is nothing to be mad about! I still think MJ was the best player I saw, but I never played in the NBA and defended on him so I don't have a base to argue about that, neither the other "experts" here on youtube! I'm sure in some years there will be a player entering the Hall of fame saying that for him the hardest player to guard was not LeBron but was Stephen Curry or Rose or Wade, etc etc!

Not taking anything away from his game but thats the truth. Its like when the heat got destroyed by the spurs in thr finals, the very next day all you heard was lebron this, lebron that, wheres lebron going, lebron, lebron lebron. atAnd thats there poster boy now and they generate tons of money off of him to. Gary summed it up best. Stocktan would shoot like 7/11 field goals, which right there is 14 points. Maybe one is a three, bringing us to 15. Lets say he goes 6/6 in free throws (Stocktan rarely missed), bringing us to 21. He would then have 9-15 assists as well. Lowballing that just two pointers, there's 18 points off assists, bringing us 39 points that he directly contributed. And lets not forget that because Stocktan is one of the greatest passers of all time, there was a lot of +1's as well. Not to mention that Stocktan was an extremely physical defender, the kind of guy who would use every single trick or do everything is the game he could to beat you. So not only did Stocktan often put up numbers on GP, but like GP said, they would play anywhere from 6-11 times a year. We all know that Jordan is one of, if the greatest player ever, but like Gary said, it's his opinion.

the only reason Shawn Kemp is not on hall of fame is because he dunked on so many people and that's very disrespectful.

Bon Vivant also he never won a title, never maximized on his talent, didn't even really play well in what should have been his prime, he posted up too low on the block to be a consistent scorer in the post, and was a huge cocaine addict.

I recall a game where Payton suffered what was called a serious ankle injury. The immediate forecast was he would be out for some time. He started and played the next game. Another night the Sonics were well down in the 4th quarter and a timeout was called. GP was screaming into the huddle "We can win this game". They did. One of the toughest and toughest minded players ever IMO.

Gary is right .....Stockton was one helluva tough guy to deal with .... I don't think anyone will argue that Stockton is better than Jordan.... But the Sonics and Utah battled a lot back in the day and Gary had to face Stockton multiple times during the season and in the playoffs .... Utah was tough, and Stockton was a big reason why, the guy was Mr consistency in his career .... You can't ask for a better point guard than Stockton ....he's the man

@vinnyl2647 жыл бұрын
funkyflights also, Stockton was harder to prepare for as a defender. When Michael was going downhill, you were prepared for the drive and knew what he was likely to do. With Stockton you couldn't prepare because he was going to pass or suddenly shoot. no way did GP say Stockton was better, just harder for him to guard haha

Gary you deserved it Congrats, wish the Sonics were still in Seattle sad the NBA stole them from us. I was a big fan watched and attended a lot of those games in KeyArena in the 90's and early 2000's and even some in the Tacoma Dome too when they were remodeling KeyArena and Gary was a man about town remember seeing him a few times around the Queen Anne area at Buca Di Beppo and seeing the man driving in his Bentley too right in front of the old Tower Records in Queen Anne what a throwback since it's all gone now but I still have the memories of Gary Payton in my city, our city.

The way he spoke about his “ex” wife really says even more. Athletes have a whole tribe at home being raised mostly by their wives. As a mother who had the help of my kid’s father, I give them mad respect. It’s not easy.

@@bettywatkins28 Im totally agree with your statement adding that I felt a bit of guilt on his words, like he regrets losing a great woman.. my comment was more related to in court basketball as they were rivals and compete against each other.. I was not there to see his life outside the court, but definitely she deserves all the credit and it looks like he is aware of that.

@Zamppa868 жыл бұрын
I honor The Glove a lot. I liked, no I loved him as a player. As said before he probably was the most complete point guard there has been to date, he could do it all, both physically and verbally. He was the guy who forced Michael Jordan to have his worst finals stats of his career. Those aren't small feats. Although I dislike The Glove for one thing and that thing is the grudge he still has against Jordan. It's clear The Glove still 'hates' Jordan because of those 96 finals and 'stealing' that ring from him GP thinks he should have gotten back then. The Glove is of course entitled to have his opinnion that Stockton was harder to guard than Jordan but I still think there's that grudge behind that opinnion more than anything else. Anyways The Glove has more than earned his place in the HOF and he still is one of my favourites of all time. I try to have him in 2K every single year if possible, and not just in my collection but as the starting PG of my main lineup. That's how much I honor him.

Jeez.. Have you watched the whole series? MJ was still scoring at him. It was the whole team effort. When MJ scored 27 the rest of the players scored less than 25! It was a low scoring ballgame as it's won on defense... 🤦♂️
