Being a complete newbie to gardening, I found this extremely helpful. "In all thy getting, get thee UNDERSTANDING". He points out some very pertinent principles that seem to suggest that they would be helpful, no matter where you live. While I don't live in southern SoCal any more, the PRINCIPLES seem to hold true for NE Ohio. I know I will have to adjust for the native environment but that's yet another area I need to understand. When I lived in So Cal, I found the long time Japanese and Mexican farmers had the prettiest gardens, from both a health and artistic perspective.

compost is great just don't mix it in I live in Washington state where you can't find a inch of ground where there isn't something growing but the compost or organic matter is on top you don't need science just look in nature and try to copy that. I've been doing a lot of research over the years and nobody has recommended straight compost.

Is activated charcoal made of the same substance used in gardening? Probably just more finely ground

given plants grow in predominantly mineral based soil, could you use a potting mix of half perlite (permeability) and half vermiculite (porosity)?

Sadly, although I want to see all 3 hours, I don't have time to look through the class to see if there is an answer for my question: Do you cover in this class what to do with kitchen scraps? Can I use these as a "mulch"? I'm trying to avoid traditional compositing (I'm lazy/very little space..community garden plot). Thank you!

Generally we would not recommend to throw kitchen scraps around the yard, simply because it will cause more problems in the long run, for example, attracting unwanted pests and fruit flies. If you are limited on space and don't have the space for a compost bin, a tip we could recommend would be getting a 4" PVC pipe in about 2 foot sections, drill holes around the bottom half and bury between or next to your trees. With this you can throw the food down the pipe and cap it off so critters cant grab the scraps, then when you water you will wash the nutrients down to the root zone. -KC

I'm wondering is it ok to have saucers under containers to catch the water that drains out to let the plant take up the water at a later time? Also should we mulch containers as well?

It's in general not a good idea to let potted plants sit in water that has drained through from the top. Many plants do not like "wet feet," and if there is still water in the dish then the soil above it is probably also soaked. Alternatively you can water from the bottom into your dish (instead of top-down) and let the plants wick up the water they need through the hole and soil in the bottom of the pot. You will have to experiment with your plant to see if the soil will wick enough for the plant. You would still want to toss any water that it has not "drank" up after an hour or so.
