MLB biggest problem is not how they choose to advertise the game and/or its players. It's the on field product. It takes too long and it's slow. Here are my ideas on how I would fix the on field product of the league: 1) Shorten the regular season by 30 games from 162 to 132. Start on the first week of April and end on the last week of August. 2) Postseason playoffs should be lengthen and expanded. Start postseason on the first week of September with 16 teams, 8 from each league, 7 game series in each round, just like the NBA and NHL postseason. The more teams will bring some needed excitement and drama for many lower seeded teams. 3) Make the overall game shorter. Reduce the innings from 9 to 7 innings. Tie games recorded during regular season but have a runner at second for extra innings during postseason play. 4) Teams are granted at most two chances to substitute and switch players from their lineup or rotation in any innings during the game. For instance, if the game is tied entering the last inning, each team has the ability to bring back their best players to face each other to see who will win the game.

why is every other league allowed to make changes to the sport except baseball. In 2007 nba was 10x more boring than baseball. The finals had scores in the low 70's thats boring as fuck. The nba changed rules to soften defenses and look what happened offense exploded and with lebron goin to miami the popularity sky rocketed. MLB needs to increase action. Shifts need to be limited because they adversely make it harder for even good hitters to get hits so they only aim for homeruns making the league a three true outcome league. Did you watch the playoffs? Some guys hit it perfectly up the middle and someone was standing there because analytics tell you EXACTLY where you are most likely to hit it.

This generation is missing a Ken Griffey JR. Someone that the kids aspire to be. As great as Mike Trout is I kind of agree with Manfred. He kinda has the personality of Kawhi. Javier Baez, Giancarlo Stanton, Jose Altuve, Christian Yelich, Ronald Acuna, Shohei Ohtani, Clayton Kershaw, Aaron Judge, etc etc. There are a lot of guys in the MLB that are easily "marketable", but they fail to do so. I love this video and I’m happy people with influence care about the sport like I do. I’m a lifelong die hard baseball fan. It is MY sport, it’s the ultimate game. I couldn’t agree more with what has been said and I’d like to add a few things to the conversation. FYI I’m a 39 year old white male. I grew up playing baseball, lots of baseball. When I wasn’t playing baseball, I was making up a game revolving around baseball. We played card games, and video games, but most of the time we were outside playing some form of baseball. Hot box, home run derby, long toss, wall ball, it never ended. In 2005 I started noticing some trends in my state, Utah. Little League was slowly being replaced by “super league” teams. Early on it was only the best players with quality coaches. Quality coaching is now a thing of the past. Local leagues and ball teams are all but eliminated. Recruiting is the way to make a team, no draft at the park down the street. Those with money and talent get the opportunities. Maybe that’s life. Without the local league, what is the need for a city to maintain a ballpark that sits empty? In Utah, Riverton park was the oldest little league park in the state. It had lights and was a privilege to play a rare night game if you were lucky enough to make an All-Star team. Riverton’s league dwindled, due to players choosing super league, until there weren’t enough players to form four teams needed for a season. Riverton leagues that used to have 16-20 teams each year, at each level, now have none! Riverton city couldn’t justify keeping a large park with three fields without using it. Renting it out to “super league” wasn’t worth it. The 100+ year old park was torn down a few years ago. A sad day for baseball in Utah. Baseball needs to be saved within the localized neighborhoods. This gives every kid a chance to play, even if they’re poor. Super league has become a travel league, that emphasizes a high volume of guaranteed games. Combining recruited players from all over the valley with lots of travel virtually eliminates the ability to hold practice. It is logistically impossible for teams to make players drive 40, 50, and even 100 miles just to run a 90 minute practice. Promoting a lot of guaranteed games sounds good, but they’re destroying a fundamental of baseball, practice! I watched my nephew’s 13 year old super league team play five years ago. I could hardly stand to watch. On any given play at least four position players were immediately out of position. The coaches were completely ignorant to the game. It wasn’t baseball, it was a bunch of 13 year old kids playing what looked like tee ball quality baseball. So I would focus on saving little league, here are 3 simple ideas. 1) Little league has a license to wear MLB team names. Most of us choose a favorite team based on early memories of wearing an MLB uniform. In 1988 I played first base for the Giants and my last name is Clark. Will Clark and the Giants will forever be a part of me. Super league teams raise baseball players who wear uniforms that say “Louisiana Hot Bats,” or whatever. Brand, and Loyalty, create it! Go ALL IN ON LITTLE LEAGUE! 2) Coaches need training. I would use MLB players and coaches to create an online video training series to teach the fundamentals of baseball. Teach coaches how to run a practice. What drills to run, how to practice situations, and how important this is to MLB teams. We don’t get to see pro’s practice, and A-Rod had some great ideas for making that happen. I would give it for free to help save the game, but maybe you give it free to licensed leagues. 3) Players need training. Show how A-Rod might take 150+ ground balls a day, or hit off the tee’s, do soft toss, and study film etc. Players need to learn drills, position play, foot work, stretching, workouts, and nutrition, the list goes on and on. What if there was a video series they could use made by major leaguers demonstrating and teaching these basics. This would endear them to these players and the MLB brand. Imagine if Bryce Harper challenged kids to hit 250 balls off the tee this week (or whatever), and next week was a new challenge by Javier Baez. Get creative! I worked as a groundskeeper for the AAA, SLC Bees several years ago. I noticed how deep and intense players and coaches think about the game. There is a wealth of knowledge in the minor and major league systems about every facet of the game. These beautiful concepts, philosophies, and strategies aren't being passed down to our youth leagues. Baseball is a wonderful game that attracts brilliant minds, give kids with that aptitude something to chew on! We’re witnessing the slow death of baseball in America. There is just too much competition; video games, extreme sports, and so much more. Baseball, if it will survive, must save itself within the neighborhood. Small town baseball is surviving, but just barely. In 20 years American born MLB players will be a minority. The only thing super league has done is create more opportunities for the elite. Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, and Kris Bryant are the first generation who came through the super league, AAU system. Rather than ~ 20 league games and ~ 10 All-star games, they played 120+ games a year. Time will tell if this is a good thing, maybe they’ll burn out or their bodies won’t hold up. I wish I could do more, I’ve pondered this for 15 years. I wanted to make a film documenting these things in Utah, but it’s tough to get people on board. I hope MLB listens because they’re blowing it in my mind. MLB needs someone with vision to lead them, I hope they get that someone soon!

Couldn't agree more. Especially about professional players/coaches challenging kids to do different challenges each week and helping coaches who are most likely volunteers really learn how to run a practice and coach a team better. Amazing!!👍👍

Baseball’s problem is the product on the field is not appealing to the majority of youth. NBA and NFL games are exciting. Comebacks and lead changes and suspense. Pitching has become too dominant with strikeout numbers skyrocketing and the team that is leading through the 3rd or 4th inning probably wins 80-90% of the time. Unless you’re watching your favorite team, why tune into a baseball game. They need to find a way to have more games play out like game 4 of the 2020 WS. That game could compete with the NBA or NFL best games.

The content creation, specifically from KZbinrs, currently taking place with all levels of basketball (high school, college, and NBA) is what has propelled it into the world wide supersport that it has become. The full highlights in a ten minute video of every single game of the NBA season make the entirety of the sport accessible and practical for everyone. Even non-superstars at each level are able to generate a tremendous following because of this content creation. High school players like Zion and even Hailey Van Lith can become viral sensations. If baseball wants to grow, like Gary V said, they have to open the floodgates of content creation.

This is a great video on a great topic, one I'm very passionate about as well. Here's my 2 cents: Baseball is a data-driven sport, sprinkled with situational story-driven drama and intrigue each time a batter steps up to the plate... if you know the stats and player histories. You see, There is watching baseball without any knowledge or context of the data/drama, and there is watching baseball with all the context of the data/drama. The first one would be boring to watch to anyone - even us. That's what you have to solve right away in my opinion. Get the data and context of the drama each time a batter steps up to the plate, to the casual watcher. I work in tech and VFX and lucky for Baseball a lot of stars align very well for it's allure to be extracted and played with in various interactive ways. Fantasy Baseball is great, but just scratching the surface. The MLB needs to step up and make an example of what a data-driven spectator sport looks and feels like in 2019. The live Facebook games are in the right direction, but its just playing patty cake in my opinion. Augmented reality will work very well with live baseball games - there are by now multiple options for good web-based AR frameworks so the possibilities are endless for overlaying various things for the viewer to interact with the data while watching the live visual context on screen. Make it cool, fun, exciting, dramatic. Let fans create their own live curated AR overlays that other fans can choose to use while they watch. Imagine a famous you-tuber like PewdiPie having free reign to make watching a game fun for his fans. I agree with making it open, we live in an open source world embrace it. Baseball cannot survive the new attention-span deficit era, unless it addresses the chasm between a new/casual watcher and the vast amount of context required to make a game interesting. Good news is, I think there are a lot of possibilities!

When I was a kid, my father took me to Briggs stadium every summer to see the Tigers play. but, with my children, I didn't take my kids to the ballgame. Why? It was too freakin expensive. The tickets were $100 each, parking $20, and the concessions easily run $50. Taking a couple of kids to the game would be easily $500. I could not justify that. So, my kids are not fans. Major league baseball has priced out the middle class dad taking his kids out to the ball park. So, the current generation doesn't care about the game

#1--open MLB gates 3 hours pre game. #2- have live entertainment prior to all 162 games (AKA music, free giveaways, etc) #3-force ALL MLB teams to have 85% attendance at all games or monetarily fine them publicly, #4- have a league MINIMUM the owners must spend to field a team and no tax on high payroll teams #5-offer discount on MLB season package on the back of every ticket purchased to a game (If you attend an Atlanta Braves game, you can then purchase the MLB season package cheaper)

The reason NBA is so successful is you don't 4 teams out spending the bottom 12 teams in the league...combined. Why even go to a game or get excited for my home team when I know that its just a farm team for the Yankee's or Red Sox or the Dodgers.

You have to boost the game from a HS & College level.... so much attention is on basketball & football bc of HS/college... that’s why paying them is such a big deal... think about it... no one talks about paying a college baseball player...
@nohbuddy15 жыл бұрын
Because in terms of baseball it doesn't matter due to the minors. College football and basketball players straight go to the NFL and NBA.
@stonedalligator20255 жыл бұрын
True. HS football and basketball is killing baseball in terms of marketing up and coming stars. A year ago when he was still in HS, everybody and their mother knew who Zion Williamson (apparently the next basketball phenom) was, whereas all the HS pitchers and position players that went in round 1 of the MLB draft? Crickets. If you ask 100 people on the street to name the kid out of HS that went first in the draft, chances are pretty high that not a single one would know the first thing about him.
@nohbuddy15 жыл бұрын
@@stonedalligator2025 Bryce Harper was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at age 15. Zion gets publicity because ESPN wants to hype him up. Plus he plays for Duke and will be a one and done After guys are drafted in the MLB they go to the minors. No one goes straight to the Majors because they would fail horribly.

I really dig this version of Arod. I like most hated him. Arod can speak eloquently, is super smart and whenever he's on Shark Tank, he's really good. Also he's come into his own as a MLB sportscaster. He's great during the postseason on tv. In 2016, his back n forth with Pete Rose was awesome

The scariest part is that Baseball gatekeepers don't even realize they have a marketing, media and content problem. The powers that be are still stuck on Pitch Clocks and speeding up the game - yet don't even know how to market their content or promote their athletes to a millennial audience. Baseball is always 10-20 years late on everything. But Mike Trout being an introvert is the problem right? LOL.

Finally a honest intelligent discussion about baseball. I work with a lot of young guys and when I ask them if they watched whatever game last night they all say the same thing. "Nah I don't really watch baseball anymore". Baseball loses most of it's future supporters at that point, nobody watches college baseball. Whereas Football and Basketball take over because of the "big" game coming up next weekend, which usually involves parties, drinking, girls and such. That's what our current culture is based on. Baseball just isn't cool.

This is gold. Part of the @onespiritualpitcher mission!!! Make Baseball Cool Again. Not by changing the game itself, but by giving players the freedom to express themselves and for fans to appreciate the game more. Open the digital flood gates. Expand it’s international presence and investment. Let fans watch batting practice for goodness sake. Collaborate with other popular movements like e-sports. Fill stadiums even if it means giving away free tickets. Tell stories.

What’s funny is I used to be addicted to Dodger Films. I’m from the UK btw, and knew *nothing* about baseball, but I loved his personality and his videos, and started to pick up bits here and there. Then, the Dodgers and the MLB shut down his channel and guess what? I did not look at baseball again for the next 3/4 years. I’m now starting to get into it again and couldn’t agree more with what A-rod and the others are saying. Get people to care about the story and the players. I mean, I support the Arizona Cardinals for crying out loud, because I watched the original All or Nothing series on Amazon and fell in love with Larry, P2, BA, Michael Bidwill, the organisation and the fact that Calais Campbell would bake freaking cookies for the team if they won. Get people to invest in your sport, rather than giving them 162 games to shout at the league.

In the Mexican baseball league before the game in the stadium they put a norteño band or sinaloense band and beer is 2x1 and is like a party, then at the end of the game they bring another artist and band to play and they put the discount of 2x1, so basically you are having a game an a party at the same place and you spend more time at the park and spend more money on beer, Coca-cola, hot dog, food etc. Of course everyone finish drunk hahahah. Mexican baseball teams get more people each season than the Mexican soccer teams.

One thing not said in this video, or even in the comments, is the ONE obvious stat the also coincides with baseball's decline in America's pop sports culture. The Black Athlete. In 1994, 17.1 percent of the league consisted of Black players. As the numbers of Black players dropped, so has the ratings. Why? I believe people love to see talent. They want to see the best athletes perform at a high level. The best athletes no longer consider baseball an option from an early age. In the Black community exists some of the greatest athletes in the world. These athletes, in basketball and football, have a relationship with pop culture. Rap and hip hop culture. An instagram culture. I grew up watching Ozzie, Griffey, Puckett, Bonds, Bo Jackson, and the list goes on and on. Some of the most electric stars in baseball since integration were Black. They drew a Black audience. They drew Black dollars. Baseball closed itself off from that culture opposed to embracing it to keep an antiquated golf like image. Baseball needs the charismatic, talented Black athlete now more than ever. When I go into a barbershop no one is talking about who is the GOAT of baseball. Hell, no one even knows who is playing in the playoffs half the time. That's a large chunk of the American market who used to be baseball's biggest fans that now seem disinterested. How to get baseball back? Market to Black youth. Sponsor camps in inner cities. Provide equipment. Build ballparks in the hood. The game has stood for over 100 years and needs no tinkering...it just needs talent. Great American talent that no longer dreams about playing it from childhood.
@theoriginaljean39174 жыл бұрын
Baseball was hype in the 90s... the roid era was great. What baseball needs is culture, media, and access. It's way too slow, food and drinks real expensive, and there is no celebrity aspect to baseball players.
@mhartleroad5 жыл бұрын
I agree with nearly all of these ideas. But I would add this, keep players with their teams, treat them like family instead of commodities. Additionally punish teams for tanking. Move the wall back to encourage more short ball. Limit pitching changes to one pitcher an inning unless he becomes injured. If injured, he goes to the dL for at least one rotation. Last, get some women on the field. They don’t have to be better than the best man, just better than the worst.
