What a wonderful traditional British vibe and I think we should be celebrating our own food more than we do. When well cooked with good ingredients, it can not only hold its own with many other cuisines, but actually surpasses them. Eating that 'shroom' was well above the call of duty Gary. A true food reviewer to give it a go! I think it's the sort of establishment where I'd really enjoy having wine with my meal too. Now I always thought tapenade was generally made with black olives, so the tomato was a new one on me and I'm not sure I completely loved the look of it on the broccoli, but the taste can be something different I know. I really loved the look of those dauphinoise potatoes though. Overall, it all looked super-yummy. How lovely to see the desserts called 'puddings'. That took me back! And that garden area would have made me give a score of 10 on its own. But I'll agree with you on the overall score. The prices are amazing considering it's Covent Garden! Oh yes, I shall definitely desert my beloved favourites next time I visit, in favour of trying Rules! A lovely and interesting meal and review Gary.

Every part of that meal looked gorgeous - all hand made and well worth the 30 minute wait. Real quality food. £50 in central London for quality and proper portions isn't really too bad, and worth the price for a special occasion or treat. I'd say it is a 10.

Yes, 'tapenade' _(from the Provence region of France),_ is traditionally made with a base of olives _(usually one or more of Castelvetrano, Niçoise and/or Kalamata olives),_ always capers _(the Provençal word for capers is 'tapenas'; from which we get 'tapenade')_ and anchovies; but sun-dried tomatoes _(although not traditional)_ are often used in some recipes too, so there is a very good chance they may have been included !?

Hi Gary. I used to work under a chef who trained at The Garrick Club in the 70's in/near Covent Garden, a similar establishment to this one. He said it was like a museum and you could feel the history as soon as you walked in. The front was originally white, apparently, but became black due to the air pollution in London. Some of his tales of what went on in The Garrick Club kitchen (bear in mind it was the late 60's) were enough to make your stomach turn inside-out - I'll leave it there! Great post as always 👍.

Last time I was at Rules it was for my Birthday treat. I had Steak and Kidney Pie with mashed potatoes. I had for dessert apple crumble as I hated rhubarb. Interesting fact about Rules. The private dining room is where Edward VII dined with Lily Langtry.You know what I mean.The service is so excellent that the doorman took off and put on my coat.

Yes indeed. We didn't take videos of that room as people were sitting sadly. Glad you enjoy your visit and we didn't have a doorman sadly!!

Rules is classy without pretension - superb English food as it is meant to be - thankfully no signs of nouvelle cuisine - food at its simplest what I think is almost 'nanny' food - and not expensive for the quality you are served in elegant surroundings. An absolute treat! - forget all your so called designed chef restaurants this is the real mccoy!

At the end of my London stay last April, I treated myself to dinner at Rules. Uig salmon, duck breast, dauphinoise potatoes and sticky date pud! Ooh! French wine and an Irish coffee. Gentle ambience, iconic decor and exemplary service. Everyone should go here once.

I have been to Rules 2 or 3 times a year for the last 20 years. It is always brilliant. The pies are the best in London - better than the London Pie Room at the Rosewood in Holborn and cheaper as well. Next time try the Chicken and Leek - i guarantee you wont have tasted better. On the price: for the taste/service/location I think its very good value for money (I know i risk setting the internet on fire here....). Ask the staff about the history of the upstairs cocktail bar - it was the private dining room used by Edward VII and Lilly Langtry. The ironically named "tradesman's entrance" door to the right of the main door on Maiden lane took them directly upstairs without being seen by diners. The wine and coctails there are steep but its the best balanced Bloody Mary you wll find in London. Great review Gary and well done on approaching 70 subs.

Based on the quality, location in central London, the surroundings in the restaurant and service etc, I personally don’t think £50 is a lot for what you got. As always, it comes down to perceived value, and looks like it adds up here for me. Gotta try this place.

What a great all-around experience. It was British cooking at its best! The gravy looked how real gravy should look and it did match with the steak and kidney pie as it should. When you did cut into the pie, it looked choc-a-block with beef etc. Very appetising. Everything was piping hot. I like that. The generous servings of vegetables were superb. That alone deserves top marks already. Real custard was served in generous quantity as well with your delicious apple and rhubarb crumble. It is a truly wonderful place for a special occasion. Very impressive! Thank you so much for taking us along. 10 put of 10.

Enjoyed taking my American cousin here this weekend as he loves the English experiences, and loves lamb The menu has changed now, with more seasonal choices - the daube venison is just a 10/10; the raspberry and rhubarb crumble probably the best I’ve ever eaten 👍🏼😋

Great food the price was fair. Quality is worth paying for. Around £50 it's a steal. It's all relatively cheap depending on how deep your pockets are. In London for a excellent meal it's a bargain 😋. I have never been but I will be over soon and will go to check it out. I will leave another comment on this video with my comments. For what there worth. Enjoy your content and videos. This brought back fond memories of the lunch I had in Rules with my business partner/Finance Director with our Company auditor, where I thoroughly enjoyed my first tasting of wild boar as the main course of three. The ambience in this place, with its history, is something else and the wonderful food, washed down with a couple of bottles of wine was even more pleasurable when our auditor picked up the tab, when I, in true Scottish fashion had to retreat to the toilet, when the bill was presented. 🤣🤣 Thank you for the memory, "Gary Eats" .

Rules as you said Gary is stunning inside ! Love the history on the walls and of this wonderful restaurant - centuries of quality. That pie was to die for as they say, superb & the sides were of ample portions. Apple & rhubarb crumble - one of my fav desserts alongside sticky toffee pudding. We don't see much rhubarb here & I miss it. 10/10 all day long from me Gary.

What a magnificent restaurant. The inside, seating and all those historic pictures are awesome. An excellent menu! The steak & Kidney pie looked very good. Never seen one with mushrooms though! Must say I didn't like the deep plate. The accessories were perfect. The star of the show was the dessert. I loved it! The prices are far too expensive. Paying £23.95 just for one pie!! However, I think this is an experience that shouldn't be missed. I'd give it a 10 and good luck to them. A great review Gary as usual, thanks very much indeed.

Hey Gary, if you ever get the opportunity grab a Steak and Kidney “Pudding” as it uses suet wrapping instead of pastry and it is to ‘die for’! We pay AU$45.00 to import a four pack of the tiny UK supermarket puddings to Australia - but it’s worth it!
@GaryEats3 ай бұрын
That sounds like a fantastic idea. I was actually tempted to try that.
