Went to the Brum Dishoom a couple of weeks ago - I thought it was brilliant - had the Okra and gunpowder potatoes as well! As a vegan, the options were huge and all the food seemed very fresh and very tasty. Service was excellent as well. It was a work thing, so I wasn’t paying the bill either which was a bonus - think it probably is on the pricey side!

I am Indian and all my English mates like Dishoom. I do think its pricey for what it is. If you went in the evening your meal would have cost a lot more, also think its a bit of a concept/theme restaurant rather than really authentic. I always prefer to go to local Indian restaurants run by families over chains to get proper Indian food.

The funny thing is that Dishoom is a family business) It was started by the younger members of the Tilda rice family) It is kind of authentic, albeit to a certain type of Indian cuisine, maybe slightly softened for western audiences. Personally I think its quite good, even though the dishes aren't exactly my all time favourite Indian dishes, but its well put together, flawlessly executed, & is quite tasty. Problem with most local Indian restaurants in the UK is a) Majority are Bangladeshi run, which arguably still is Indian food, but again a regional cuisine b) Im often just disappointed by the quality of the food as its not well thought out and prepared c) Those local restaurants often use preprepared curry sauces, if you look closely into the kitchens you can see big vats of Pateks catering sauces which explains why a lot of say Lamb Baltis all taste the same Lol. If we talk about the desi pubs they are different story usually not the best either with a few gems here and there if you go on a good day, & the posh Indian ones Trishna, Cinnamon Club etc are often just odd, a fusion of some kind of European haute cuisine & Indian food. You can do a lot worse than Dishoom, & I really like the way they do certain things eg they look after the staff and for instance take them all to India for training so they understand different foods, spices etc. That explains why the staff are usually in a good mood, & enthusiastic about the food) Would love Gary to visit India to check out different foods, would be really interesting)
@northbankgooner61268 ай бұрын
@@zatarawood3588 My point is its a commercialised concept. Right down to the dishes being served. How many Indians do you see in these establishments? It a brand that is designed to make English/British people feel like they are eating Indian food in India as opposed to the UK and it works. Indian food has soo many variables, every family cooks a particular dish in a different way. That's what makes independent restaurants unique, some are good some are bad. If you go to a restaurant in Wembley or Southall you wouldn't get hardly any of the food on the menu in Dishoom.

Dishoom gets a lot of heat but genuinely speaking as an Indian, their dishes are authentic and traditional. Their biriyani is exactly how we make it at home probably once a week. The tandoori roti is exactly how we make it except we make it on the tava. And the potatoes are exactly how our aloo sabzi is, except we chope the potatoes smaller. This is authentic and traditional North Indian food. Sure it's pricey but it is good quality tasty goodness.

I know there is only so many dishes you can try, but i was hoping you tried the lamb, i always think that tells you a good restaurant. I did smile when you said the Okra was fresh (i.e. not black like the other day) and i was hoping it was because of my e-mail i sent re said vegetable. In Canary wharf yes they are all finance guys) ... however if you went to the original one in Covent Garden they would be shoppers & a lot of tourists, if you went to the Kings Cross one it would be a lot of art students as a fashion school is just around the corner ... I did wonder myself how they afford it, god knows, but anyway it depends on which one you go to. Id say with prices rising everywhere, in London its only 20% more than you'd expect to pay in a modest local Indian restaurant these days. I think Gary paid 15 quid for the biriyani, it would be at least £12 even at the cheapest Indian restaurant you went to nowadays) If you went to a posh central London Indian restaurant they would charge £25! So all in all, I think its ok for what you get)

As i thought that was cheap for Canary Wharf as seen other people eat in that area for different food they paid more for it than you would somewhere else for the same food . Great review Gary. I absolutely agree with score you gave, it is pricey and worth knocking the points for those reasons. I agree with others, I'm Asian who grew up with Indian food. Dishoom is a concept place, food is overpriced. Eating at family run restaurant with unique feel is better over chains. However food is good, I've been to top end restaurant that gives you more than two wholemeal roti for same price. I don't know about you, I am finding the hospitality industry in a weird place, everything costs so much more now. I find myself cooking same or better meals at home. However, Dishoom is a great place for special occasions. Glad you tried it. 😊

As usual, another great review. Never had okra, but want to try it ! Biriani looked lovely! Going to make Hubby Joe firecracker potatoes tonight to go with his chicken dhansak! I’ve got to ‘give it a go’. Thanks Gary!!! More thought inducing recipes for me!

Another great review👍🏼 The food looked good there, nicely presented and decent portions. Got to be naan for me, just better for mopping up sauce! Did The Camerman get to munch as well? 😄

The photo quality of that video was excellent. Are you using a new camera, or was it the lighting? The colours of that ochre were excellent - I almost licked the food off the screen.

As always Gary, a fair honest review. I’ve been to Dishoom, once when it first opened in 2014 and once last year. Both times were for brunch; I’d recommend you try this. Unique twist on breakfast items and chai is free refills. IMO - if the biriyani didn’t come with complimentary raita then that’s a bit pricey. Good stuff!

Hi Gary, nice review. We’ve been to the London Dishoom’s quite a few times but not the Canary Wharf one (yet). Looks great. Regarding the price etc…personally, if you think what you had was almost ok for two people then that is a real plus really and needs to be factored in. A £40 meal for two has to be pretty good I’d say especially given the lovely setting, great service etc. Big tick from me. Great review as always Gary, me and the wife are big fans. 👍

The meal looked nice. Okra tends to be a bit slimey, but deep fried seemed to make a difference. Maybe I need to check the Manchester restaurant out! Another excellent review. Thank you

My fav Indian when I visit Edinburgh. Love their mango lassi and garlic nan. I have been all over Indian and find this restaurant is as close to authentic as it gets. Love to look down into the kitchen and enjoy excellent service.

I love watching your visits to Indian restaurants because that is something we never see here in the Southern States. In fact, the last Indian meal I had was over 48 years ago when I left London and moved to the US.

Went there for the office Christmas do and I wasn’t impressed but that might be because it was sharing plates and a lot more limited. The okra fries were the best thing about it for me, and the cocktails!

That was a delightful review Gary. Beautiful restaurant, quality of all the food. Agree with you, that there was enough available for 2 people. A very fair score on the results. I suppose the costs are reflected by London prices. Many thanks for sharing with us, much appreciated 👍💎👍💎👍

That looked lovely. I've never had okra but if I can find it at an Indian restaurant, I am going to try it! The portions did look decent and I can imagine that being a shared meal. The way the biryani was served is quite traditional; I worked for an Indian couple years ago, and used to go to their home for dinner once a month. She made biryani and the chicken was under the rice - but she turned it over onto a serving platter so you could get the chicken easily. I think her presentation was more 'home style' than restaurant. it was delicious, though! Thanks for sharing your experience! xx

Looked lovely Gary. I’ve only had Biryani a few times from take aways and once in a restaurant. The restaurant was the best Indian in Dublin a place called Pickle. The food was top drawer Indian food I’d highly recommend it. I had to book a table weeks in advance. Id give Dishroom a go ! based on your video 👍.

Another stunning review. I love the idea of Indian food and have periodically tried it but I am a ‘heat’ wimp. I like very mildly spiced, flavorful food. It certainly feels Dishoom would produce a meal that I could enjoy. And, as I live in Reno, I would love those prices - a lot cheaper than a meal out here. Thank you.
