The Wolseley is a great experience and all over very high quality, never had breakfast there, but had dinner there several times. Never been to the Portland cafe, but will pay them a visit as soon as possible to have a full English, been a while. Great concept and great reviews as always, Gary. Keep up the fabulous work you guys are doing. 😀

As a Brit in Texas I don’t miss a chance for a full English. One of the very best I have ever had was in the United Airlines lounge at Heathrow. I had time to burn so I went to the lounge with my pass and I was astonished to see everything for a full English laid out buffet style. You could have whatever you want and it was all fresh and piping hot. Needless to say the next meal offered in flight was given a pass as I was stuffed!

I loved the ambience and deco of the Wolseley, but the price was too high. The breakfast itself looked superb and of high quality. Maybe a special treat would take me there for breakfast. The Portland seemed to be a nice cosy little cafe, the breakfast a standard decent one. You are right, the Wolseley put Harrods to shame. Sort your breakfasts out Harrods!

@jamesprice4647 You remind me of a visit to Venice with my mom about 5 years before she died. She'd had very little chance to travel outside the US and really wanted to enjoy it. There was a gelateria on St Mark's with tables set out in the plaza. We were urged by multiple people not to waste our money (as gelatto could be bought from the same shop for carry and eat MUCH more cheaply). But she wanted to sit and enjoy being where she was. We got an ice cream concoction that came on a silver tray, with multiple lavish dishes containing whipped cream (not the spray-can sort, but cream, whipped with sugar and vanilla), cherry sauce, chocolate sauce, and additional crumbled cookies to sprinkle over as we progressed through the really very impressive amount of completely delicious vanilla and cherry gelattos. I ordered a glass of prosecco, because vacation, and she had a bottle of sparkling water. Including the service charge, about which the waiter was very apologetic and concerned that we were aware, we spent around 40 euros. Best money I spent that trip. I can still see mom sitting there, smiling and listening (half understanding, because accent) to that wonderfully kind young waiter telling her about the history of the square, and eating her gelatto. I had to help her, and then my sister and niece came along to tell us how we could have spent less at the counter. We absolutely could have. But I have the memory of that hour in St Mark's when mom was happy and enjoying the big world, feeding cookie crumbs to the pigeons, and I would do it again every time.

Hello Gary. Both places had quality breakfasts in their own way. However, being a Yorkshireman, I'd opt for the Little Portland Cafe as it was still quality at a much cheaper price. The Wolseley ('ow much for a bacon roll??) would still be a good experience for the ambience and quality breakfast (maybe once). Our best experience when we were in the UK was the Regency Cafe as I've mentioned before. Iconic ! I am amazed that you managed 2 breakfasts though ! PS - does the cameraman get fed on your videos? (LOL). I must say English breakfasts far outdo the ones here. Loving your channel & keep up the good work !

Love the review! In the States I have to make my own English breakfast. So fried eggs, beans, (Canadian) bacon (but my son prefers American smoked bacon), big sausage(s), cooked tomatoes, mushrooms but everyone wants more hash browns/fried potatoes instead of mushrooms or tomatoes. And no one wants tea or black pudding...except me (then again I was born in Canada and raised properly until we headed south in the 1970's)

You get some eggs and prepare an ice water bath. Leave eggs out for 1 min. Bring water to a boil and put the eggs in for around 7.5-8 mins (my estimate is based on how runny it looks in your vid). Then take the eggs out and leave in ice bath for around 4 mins for them to cool. Then you can eat or store in the fridge. The timing can vary depending on number of eggs, the type of pot, how hot/cold the water is, so you can experiment and tweak. The theory is basically you cook the eggs to the desired consistency and then immediately cool it to stop it from cooking further. Much cheaper, but do use high quality eggs as you are eating them semi-raw!

The Wolseley is a modern classic. Sometimes it’s difficult to imagine it hasn’t been there for 100 years. When I lived in London, it was a perfect place for a business breakfast meeting or a special lunch/dinner with loved ones and friends. You were rarely disappointed. I remember coming in there one day after the artist Lucian Freud passed away (he was a regular), they had one table with a black table cloth and a single candle burning all day in his memory. For the experience the Wolsey was very nice - breakfast well cooked -nice surroundings. Expensive though. The cafe was ordinary nice breakfast but very much cheaper. Again it depends what you want in life - but its the food you go to eat not the surroundings. Interesting to see the differences.

The Wolseley is one of my favorites in London. I always go for breakfast when I’m over. You can get a good fry up anywhere - should’ve ordered the devilled kidneys. An absolutely delicious, old school, hearty British breakfast. I get them every time. I like that the tea is a good old fashioned silver service too. The only downside is there are a lot of business meetings over breakfast - you have to listen to so much b.s. around you. Thanks for the videos.

Hello yet again Gary. Could you please start this video all over again. I am afraid when you showed me menu at the Wolseley, and I saw the price of Classic Porridge, I am afraid I passed out. The wife had to bring out the defibrillator to get my old ticker working again. When I came to, you said the cup of tea at the W, cost FIVE QUID, and I passed out again. When I eventually recovered, I saw you get the Underground on the Jubilee Line. My mid went back to the many months I spent back in the Old Dart. I frequently got the train into London using the Jubilee Line. Brought back a lot of memories. Mate, the Portland Cafe is a place after my own heart. I would have had the steak for breakfast for £9.00. Have a great weekend my friend. Thanks again for a great presentation. Just sound a siren before you eat again in those posh joints although I thought the Poached Eggs and Black Pudding at the Big W looked and no doubt would have tasted like heaven Have a fantastic Weekend mate, and watch those pennies (I would have preferred the farthings to be honest) LOL!

Yet another great vlog Gary to which i love these comparison one's. Now as to which one i preferred, The Portland won it hands down for me. There prices were amazing, but it was the Bacon that did it. As soon as the first clip came on i thought the bacon looked poor at the Wolseley, and nearly £6 for a tea NO WAY !!. Sorry i have to disagree but like i said 100% Portland for me. I did notice at the Wolseley the waiter was constantly watching you, is that because he wants to be a star on Gary Eats, or does your cameraman look a bit doggy 🤣🤣🤣 Chris.

Gary you have a tough job, but I guess someone has too do it 😮 you lucky 🍀 Bugger 😂😂by the way the Woollsley bacon was not cooked fresh , it was in a hot cupboard as where the other ingredients, even poached eggs would be pre cooked and re heated , the Portland bacon , not only back bacon rather than streaky , and the fried egg where cooked too order , the sausage was deep fried , hence the overall colour , I’m a chef of many years , you jus5 can tell , if I was on my own definitely the Portland cafe , if I was trying too impress a previous nights hook up , definitely the Woolsley 😊 another great review, loved it 😍

I love going out to breakfast, it's my favourite meal and the Wolseley looked tremendous. It's all about the ingredients and ambience at that price level. The sausage black pudding is such a great idea, but it has to be good quality in the Lancashire league and looks like it really hit the spot for you! So, I would love to go to the Wolseley once every three months and then the Portland the rest of the time. The Portland looked like a real family restaurant that cared about what they were serving. Two breakfasts in the same day? You had the same shirt on, you must have been totally stuffed!! Also, your dedicated cameraperson (him/her?) is really developing a great style with the coverage. It's upholding the unique quality you have as a host, but also savouring the journey though the plate you have been served. Congratulations! By the way, does the cameraperson ever get to eat as well, you've probably been asked this before!?

I have just started watching some of your reviews, really like them One thing I observe, if you agree, is that if the ingredients are first rate and cooked well, then you are really paying for the ambience/name. Finding those that have the the first without the later makes for a great cheaper stop and you are showing some of those. For those that charge for the ambience, there is no excuse to not perform on the quality, but some do, and you've found some of those as well. On my trips to the smoke, my best experience has been fish and chips in a pub, worst was breakfast in a 'household name' Hotel! Thanks

I've been a lot to both - I live in the West End- Little Portland is a short walk from my home & the Wolseley not much further away. Both great for different occasions. Little Portland is a bit of a regular week day brekkie spot. In the early morning its common to see many black cab drivers chowing down. The Wolseley is where I take my mum for a treat when she's visiting or meet up with my siblings, friends at weekends for brunch or high tea. Both great in their own way.
