Every Monday (except bank holidays) we do our business banking in town and adjacent to the bank is a Premier Inn. We have a full breakfast there on each occasion. There is a strategy to getting the best quality of food on offer - if a component looks dry or shrivelled (those heat lamps are powerful) we ask for fresh and are never refused. At £9.99 this has to be the very best value breakfast available, especially as you take as much, or as little, as you want. As for the £24.00 breakfast, they exist everywhere, including Harrods, Harvey Nicholls, Fortnum & Mason and many more but they aren't necessarily value for money.

I used to work for the Premier Inn as a Chef and loved it. Been doing it prior to that in all sorts of kitchens but PI was my favourite. Would work 60 hour shifts a week often though. The buffet is great fun to do but behind the scenes, I would 95% of the time be by myself, making the hot food, washing up, deliveries, any inspections or audits, prepping for Dinner, some paperwork, date checking and a few other bits, all on my Todd. With the food on the buffet, bacon its pretty much cold as soon as its out. Doesn’t hold its temperature very well, and the hash browns are best stacked on their side to avoid getting soggy. Anyway, enjoyed this vid Gary and Camera Man. And glad you picked my old ghost 👻 😂

An interesting comparison and both looked pretty good. I think bacon's a bit of a problem for buffets. It doesn't do at all well under heat lamps and I wonder if the Victorians didn't do it better with chafing dishes. Worth considering that we all tend to like the same foods in a 'full English' and there's only so much of anything we can eat at one sitting. So who wouldn't go for the cheapest version? Sometimes the ambience is worth paying for, and sometimes not and I agree, for breakfast who cares, really? Definitely it's the Premier Inn for me.

I believe it is very difficult to make a quality buffet of hot breakfast food. Scrambled eggs, bacon and hash browns or home fries, just do not lend themselves to being kept warm for any length of time. If these foods are not served quickly after they are cooked they just get soft rather than crispy, too dry or otherwise boring and unsatisfying.

The hot food was taken to order and it was all really good. Well cooked and no limits to what you could have. Coffee, tea, toast, cereal and croissants were all buffet, but I really couldn't fault it. Oh yes! Double breakfast. Steak earlier in the week and now breakfast. 😁 I have stayed at several Premier Inn and I think their breakfasts are excellent. Buffet breakfasts are always a bit hit and miss in my experience. I much prefer a breakfast that is cooked to order so that everything is hot and fresh. The Dixon Hotel was right to offer fried eggs to order although you were lucky at the Premier Inn. Buffet fried eggs can be a bit rubbery and the bacon dried out sometimes. Both breakfasts looked pretty good though. The Dixon definitely had the ambience but regarding value for money, the Premier Inn was a great deal. What no black pudding at either?!

I know why no black pudding, cooked to order always better in my opinion as well 👍

For £24 I wouldn’t expect anything to be bad! Bacon definitely dried up, that’s one big problem with buffets isn’t it, stuff does dry up if left out for too long under the lamps, I suppose you just leave off the bacon and have more of other foods, I would ! We’ve had premier inn brekki’s before and for the price they are pretty good and you do get a good selection of other items, I love a danish then onto main event 😂. Totally agree with you on this one, such brilliant value for money 👍😀 thanks Gary 😊

Hi Gary Very interesting review today on the breakfast buffet. Bacon in particular is notoriously not good from a buffet unless you almost get it as soon as they refill the tray. Not a great fan of hash browns either so rather they did bubble and squeak. Good to see the beans were hot because one thing I cannot stand is warm or cold beans. The scrambled egg seemed to be be very nice at both places which is good because they can dry out as well on a buffet. I’m with you there wasn’t a great deal between the 2 places but the premier inn was far the better value for money. Best breakfast I ever had was on an old inter city train back in the day. It was blooming fantastic!

The one thing I've found with buffet type breakfasts in hotels is the hot food is either undercooked when it first comes out (they seem to allow for some food laying there untouched for a while so it will still be "cooking") or it's overcooked (been sitting there for while still cooking as it wasn't being eaten). The cooked food is not often hot enough either. Not a fan of them myself for that reason. I prefer to find a nice cafe somewhere like E.Peliccis or Regent Cafe or Terry's Cafe for a cooked to order quality breakfast. Also, as I'm not a really big eater, all you can eat buffets don't work for me as the price of them generally outweighs how much I'm going to eat. As well as that, those snail paced toast contraptions that take 4 days to toast your bread drive me up the wall. Each to their own I guess. Enjoyed your video though Gary. Good comparison. Premier Inn wins for me - virtually same basic cooked menu for half the price !

I still think the Travel Lodge at Euston provides one of the best for value and pretty good quality. I was there a few weeks ago and it was under £11 for an all you can eat and included hot and cold drinks. Absolutely loads of choice for hot or cold breakfast. I always have a full English when out and they served good Cumberland sausages (no herbs, fortunately), back bacon, hash browns etc. The scrambled egg was a good colour and firm and all told, I could not fault it. Had breakfast there two days running and it was well worth it.

So you get what you pay for isn't always the case! My last job before I retired was a relief manager for a building company and I spent around 4 years in and out of premier inn hotels, the breakfasts very seldom were bad, and if you asked for something to be cooked from scratch was rarely a problem either, I nearly always asked for some fresh bacon and it was done. all you can eat for a tenner can't be bad, so why bother paying £24? Another entertaining video Gary, cheers!

Very fair review. I couldn’t justify spending £24 on breakfast (despite it having more choice) when I could have almost the same breakfast for less than half the price. I’ve had plenty of Premier Inn breakfasts over the years and they do very greatly in quality - it seems to depend largely on the chef on duty. Oh, and I absolutely hate those rotary toasters - they have almost never been set correctly and either burn the toast or under-cook it so that you have to send it through a second time, resulting in burnt toast again.

From my German point of view I wouldn't pay £24 on an English Breakfast when I can have it for £10. So the second place easily wins in that race. But first place seemed to have a great selection of cold food that you totally ignored. If there was salmon and fancy cold cuts, nice cheeses and other things like that I would not bypass them. On the other hand in a place like the first one I would skip convenience food like these triangular röstis/hash browns any time (I really get annoyed when a restaurant has rösti on the menu and it turns out they give you that frozen stuff...). However that was another entertaining video that I enjoyed like all your others! Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work, Gary!

@@GaryEats If you are in Germany right now I wish you a great time! Be careful when choosing a place for Döner Kebab, though. Avoid the ones with the finely grounded sausage meat. Otherwise you might end up with one as bad as the one you had at German Doner Kebab. You may also want to try local food which varies quite a bit in the different parts of Germany. Well, that's also true for the beer. And we got some decent white wines, too!

Aside from the scrambled eggs looking better at Shakedown, that did not look like a £24 breakfast. In my opinion that was poor value for money. On the other hand, the Premier Inn breakfast looked only slightly lower quality, for example, the bacon looked very tatty on the tray but represented outstanding value for money. After spending about 20 years of my working life with 3 nights in hotels most weeks, from 5 star luxury to the stuff of nightmares B&B's I always stood by this simple system. If the Breakfast Room was 25% full or less then you where in for a top Brekki, if it was up to half full then it should be OK, up to 75% then you where on dodgy ground and if it was full and chaotic, then get out quick, save your money and have a Sausage & Egg McMuffin Meal with Orange Juice and Coffee at the Golden Arches around the corner!!! Also cost is no measure of what you are going to get. I have plenty of £5 all you can eat that knock the socks off a £25 all you don't want to eat!

You're on the money! Shakedown may be a slightly better breakfast in terms of the wider ingredients on offer but people go for staple breakfast items at breakfast as you pointed out. Its less about the experience for breakfast as well, people get excited about the experience for lunch or dinner. On that basis its not worth 2 and a half times more than the premier inn. Nice one Gary.
