The French onion soup looked like something my aunt used to conjure up on evenings during calving time. She'd chop up a load of onions and fry them gently in dripping for about half an hour. Then she'd add a knob of butter and fry them till they were well browned. Then she'd add a couple pints of Bovril and any crusts of bread left around. It would be stirred, covered and then put at the back of the stove to stay hot. It would be stirred again before everyone went to bed and water added as needed. It was a real, warming pleasure to come into if you had spent a couple of hours helping cows give birth (usually January/early February) at about 3am. Any leftovers were either eaten on toast the next morning or added to mashed potatoes at lunchtime. I'd forgotten all that... thank you for restoring a good memory 😊

I’m a regular at Cote. I therefore obviously enjoy the quality of the food. The portion sizes aren’t huge, but I know & accept that. As you say, the value is in the set menu, which usually has enough choice to keep me happy. Overall, I would always recommend Cote. The staff are always friendly & helpful. A great video.

I guess I am getting older and can appreciate some calmness, unfiltered, unassuming content. Some of the content on KZbin is exhausting, chaotic and are widely using sponsors. There is nothing worse to watch than a video that stood halfway through to say “a shout out goes to (sponsors name and product)”.

I’m a bit tight with my hard earned cash . But I really thought the 3 courses was ,all said and done value for money . These dishes rarely appear on uk menus . As a non profligate person, I must give it an 8 out of 10 . Some bits of baguette would ve been a good touch . The cooking at this establishment is good . Not la di da , but honest . Onion soup is messy but delicious.

My son used to work at a newly opened Cotes in our town. Weekend prior to official opening, the staff were asked to invite family and friends to come in for a three course meal so the staff and the kitchen could practice a full service and all the food was completely free. Really nice touch. Been back since and the food is very, very good. The fish stew was mind blowing.

Have eaten in quite a few different branches of Cote and can honestly say I've never had a bad meal. Service is always excellent, food very good and if you sign up for their emails there are frequent offers like complimentary cocktails or dessert if you eat from the a la carte menu. Love them!

Gary, dear boy, I absolutely agree with you that Cote is the best chain restaurant in the UK. Magnificent. I also had the duck confit and the creme brulee. With a glass or two of French red wine it was one of the greatest lunches I have ever enjoyed. We'll be back!

Forgot to add that in addition to The Camerman's sterling work , the audio is really excellent. On some of the channels I view they do not use the microphones you favour, which means that unless they are directly speaking into the camera , you end up having to continually change the volume . You always let us know if you have audio problems . Much appreciated.

Last year I ate in the Cote Brasserie in Watford, north London and also the Cote Brasserie in Covent Garden. Both were absolutely excellent in respect of ease of getting a table, service from all the staff, taste of food and general overall quality. On both occasions my partner and I had an extremely enjoyable meal. Oh, and thank you Gary, for another of your first class reviews. I am becoming addicted to your channel.

Great review Gary we went to the one in Newcastle. Food was good. But we’re they excelled was with allergies. Manager came and took my wife’s order explained what she could have and they brought her food out separately which was excellent.

Gary I thought that the French onion soup was not like I know it from France. The soup itself looked fine but it should have sliced baguette floating on top of the soup with cheese grated over and then put under the grill to melt and slightly caramelise the cheese. It should also be accompanied with a mustard mayonnaise called Rouille which pairs perfectly with it. They tried to fancy up what doesn't need fanning up. I thought like you that the duck looked just a little anaemic but it did look very tender. Your dessert looked totally decadent! I want to add that I really like Coté Brasserie they are fairly consistent and I feel you get money"s worth. Usually excellent service and always a carafe of complimentary water.

Don't start with a fib😳You've had " French Fries " Classic soup, would have been better served in a standard soup plate. With cut roundel's of baguette croutons & cheese floating on the soup. The Confit Duck ( Confit, is the first /main stage of preservation. Cooking longer, lower in warm oil. Making a tough cut tender.) And also making the meat ready to store for the winter months. Personally I'd have liked to seen the leg tidied up, remove the knuckle end & flashed under the grill or on the BBQ. Creme Brulee looks like a winner. The cost £34.65 💷💷was within value for money range. You didn't mention the dreaded service charges 🤔Another clear unbiased video. Honest, open and fair. And as always well worth a watch. Hi Gary, Côte Brasserie is a good place to have a meal with friends and family. Last time I was there, I had Cheese Soufflé as a starter, it was very nice, Confit Pork Belly, delicious and for dessert Paris Brest, love pistachio praline. It was a fine meal and I think I gave it a 7 out of 10. It was on a night out with some friends from work, so we had a great time and had a few bottles of wine. Another great review, mate, fantastic work, can really put myself in your shoes with your ability to describe the flavours and textures. Have a wonderful rest of your week and enjoy the summer as long as it lasts, mate, as when I am coming home in three weeks time, sure it's going to rain cats and dogs!.😅😅

The Cote in Bath is very nice. Also, Bath may be a good option for reviews as it has many different kinds of cuisines to include some good Indian restaurants. You may need to spend the weekend, though!

Gary, Cote in Basingstoke? What next 😂😂. Interestingly I’ve long consider them by far the best large chain restaurants. They’ve suffered a lot since Brexit but weathered the COVID storm fiasco and good luck to them. Yup, I sometimes think their portions could be more generous for sure, however I’ll take quality over quantity any day and their prices are generally fair considering the product.

Great video. I've visited London a few times from Canada and somehow never noticed Cote! The prix fixe menu seems reasonable. I love a good steak frites. Maybe I'll try them next visit

Oh Gary!!!...All that cheese with the soup, those rich creamy potatoes, more richness from the duck and then creamy indulgence in the dessert! ..You are just ASKING for nightmares after that!!! ..I remember eating duck in the '80s..and thinking myself SUCH a sophisticated 'young' lady!.. I think I was born a 'foodie'!

Great video Gary. We love Cote and always visit the one in Covent Garden when staying in Aldwych. I mentioned previously that I’ve become good at predicting your score just before you reveal it. I’m getting better - I correctly predicted your score while you were perusing the menu !

Loved the review , as always you inspire us to all " give it a go "😂😂😂😂😂. Duck confit happens to be a particular favourite of mine . However I prefer it in a cassoulet. It is a really rich taste , so a little goes a long way . The potatoes looked lovely . Always a great day when you can eat outside in uk . 🎉🎉

Great review Gary of French-inspired cuisine. I agree with you that French onion soup doesn’t need so much cheese, like how the bread is served on the side instead of in the soup. That duck look amazing and to finish off the meal with a cream brûlée, definitely gets me in the mood for some Paris sporting activity/events happening soon.
