Oh my goodness! Even your chain restaurant food looks better than what we have in the U.S.! I'm going to visit the UK just for the chance to gorge on your wonderful variety of cuisine! I, too, would've given an 8.5. It looked much better than many of the sit down chains we have in our area and the price can't be beat! Never been to Toby but my 85 year old neighbour and his wife virtually live in the one in York. He says it works out cheaper than buying your own ingredients, the power used to cook it and it also saves the faffing about at their age. I think he makes a great point. Your neighbor has a good point. Many of my older relatives eat their main meal of the day out. They have their toast and tea in the morning, and then take an early supper. They say they can get a more balanced meal than if they tried to cook at home.

It really is to your credit, Gary, that after visiting some very high end restaurants, you can still go to a Toby Carvery with such an open mind, and review it fairly, and on its own terms. It's something that really sets you apart from other channels and I'm sure that its in part why yours is becoming as successful as it is (along with your willingness to acknowledge and engage with your loyal fanbase - you can't tell me that wee jog at the start wasn't a little nod to the comments section :) )

Another great review Gary. You're 100% right saying the timing is important. I've visited a fair few Toby's in my time and generally it's excellent value for the money. My advice is to get there around opening time for the top spec. Occasionally I've been and the veg has been left out to long and the meat has turned dry. The one in Newbury has never let me down. Not tried the pud you had but I will shortly. All the best 👍

As you said Gary, all about the timing. When I go it’s got to be arrive at 11.45 for midday carvery and nearly always get the fresh meat. I agree with the budget, it’s great value and if it’s a family lunch, saves a ton of washing up.

Back in the 90's I had a girlfriend (5 years and a son) that was a secret shopper for Toby. She even did the Toby Inns (hotels). I've had many a lovely meal on the house, the full Xmas menu several times, a gorgeous double room with a lake view balcony where we were encouraged to use every service available (Fax's were still a thing back then). She was based in Milton Keynes yet travelled the whole of Southern England. Interesting fact. If there were reports of bad service her role was to be a 'Karen' and push it to the limit. A role that she excelled at, she was a natural. Many managers were traumatised. Another interesting fact. On her very first secret squirrel job she got food poisoning but was too embarrassed to put it in her report. I suppose puking and shitting on the hard shoulder of the M1 would have been seen as an exaggeration? She got a lot tougher after that.

From decades back with my mum, dad and sister.... cauliflower cheese or cauliflower in white sauce with either a Sunday lunch beef joint or Monday night roast chicken, red cabbage was always in a jar pickled (hello Epicure and Haywards!) and wheeled out for meals from Christmas Day lunch to New Year's Day evening... along with the piccalilli!

I keep going back to Toby Carvery, your right about it all depends when you arrive, ive had dried hard yorkshire pudding, but when ive asked, they give me a fresh one. Plenty of choice and as much as you want. Great staff, very polite and freindly. Ive had a prawn cocktail, it was excellent and good prices, i usually have the sponge cake or seasonal crumble with custard for dessert. In our Toby, Enjoy 2 courses from just 11.49, and add an extra course for +2.00! But no prawn cocktail, i have to be honest, its exvellent value for money and give it 8.5. By the way i love cauliflower cheese on my carvery. As always great review Gary. Sorry my comment is so long

A three course carvery. Great idea. Prawn cocktail for £4! A roast carvery and a pudding. Get in! The perfect menu. The prawn cocktail looked very good and is excellent value. That's a hit. The popcorn chicken looked nice and a decent portion. The tomato tart looked very good and something different. At 2.50 that's outstanding. Cauliflower cheese 🤒 evil evil. Red cabbage is lovely. Peas are peas. Beef and Turkey cooked wonderfully well as was the gammon. That whole meal was fantastic despite the manky potato. Chocolate fudge cake 🎂.another excellent choice. That whole meal is my kind of food. Great value 3 course meal. It's an 8 elevated to 8.5 because the value is unquestionable. Thanks for doing this Gary.

we are English but Live in Australia now, however when we do visit the UK my 19 year old son has Toby Carvery on his must do list every time, he loves roast dinners, and a Toby is his go to place when in the UK....... I have been many times, where I used to work in Morley Leeds, the Toby was our work local. I agree with you Gary, timing is key, although I have always found that the chefs are usually very accommodating if you ask how long the meat has been out and when is the next roast due..... 8.5 out of 10, I agree.... great review

Ideally mash could form a breakwater against any gravy also. I'm not a fan of gravy mixing with the cheese sauce. Cheese sauce on peas or stuffing is part of the experience. Good call boss.

Your so right when you mentioned about the Timing of any visit, clearly this visit your timing was perfect- I was almost eating the roast with you and it certainly looked both good &good value.Would I go to a Toby's again- absolutely as you say most likely the BEST chain for a Sunday styled roast. To answer your questions. .....My wife and I say a resounding YES to Cauliflower Cheese and Red Cabbage with any roast dinner. We keep wanting to go to the Toby Carvery on the outskirts of York. My wife & I have been to the Toby's Carvery in Middlesbrough twice in recent UK holidays and have loved it both times. Quality roast dinner at a very good price. Another quality video Gary. Absolutely spot on about the timing at a Toby. Have been to the same one and had a really nice meal (Breakfast or Lunch) and then been back and been disappointed. Sometimes the food isnt that hot but that can be timing again. But its Toby so it is what it is so most people know what to expect.

Sadly I've never had a good Toby Carvery experience , cold food , bad service and vowed never to go back but family and friends always managed to drag me back. For the money and what you had, that is a good value meal. I haven't been to one for many years, but I thought it was okay - just never felt the urge to go back anytime soon. As it turned out - years! I prefer to give my money to local businesses where I can and not Whitbread or whoever owns it these days. Cauliflower cheese - maybe doesn't belong on a traditional roast but I certainly enjoy it when it's there!

Evening Gary just down the road from me tonight. I will be at that Carvery next week with my "Knit and Natter" ladies we do a lot of natter not so much knit! Meal looked good especially the meats. Love cauliflower cheese a favourite of mine love it with beef.More deserts please Gary as love them. Its good value I think. I would give it 8 1/2 the same as you. Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman Well i won't lie my friends i was very impressed with this vlog, to which getting three meats cooked well and served together is not easy. One dish i loved to see was the cauliflower cheese, im a 70's 80's child but my flock and there partners (hate that work) have been asking for it more and more in the last few years. Your videos are great Gary, you are so engaging, the way you show the food, show you breaking down and trying the food and your reaction is so professional for what you do. When I go to a carvery I always try to find the smaller roasties as the massive ones are always hard on the inside and not crispy on the outside. Hopefully you come to Lincoln for a review, if you did you would have to try the fox and hounds at Willingham by stow. By far the best food around here.

I agree with your comment about the element of potluck regarding how fresh the food is when you visit a Toby carvery. Most of the time it's always been fine I have found, although on occasion, I have found the hot lights have dried up some of the vegetables etc. I have always found the meats to be fresh and always well cooked. Value for money wise I have always found it quite fairly priced considering quality and portion size. I agree it's the best carvery chain in the country and I have never found anyone that has really come that close in terms of cost versus quality and value for money. Marking wise I would put it at about an 8 as an average based on having visited more than a few Toby carveries over the years.

After seeing the review at the end, I want to reinforce the timing point you made - a few years back, I struggled to book to take my mum for Mother's Day, had to accept an unusually early 11:40 time for lunch...and it was the freshest, best tasting carvery we've ever had! Since then we never book lunch any later than 12:30 or so, that way we either get the first layout or the first refresh of the food.

Oh it’s ages since I’ve been to a Toby Carvery but when I have been the food has always been excellent. Your dinner made my mouth water! The prawns equally looked yummy. Good value for money & I love cauliflower cheese on a roast dinner!

Csuliflower cheese is ALWAYS on any roast in MY family, al9ngbwith both yorkshire pudding, plus sage & onion, or Chestnut, 0stuffing! Lol I love that Toby's serves red cabbage, too, but I'd get rid of the peas, & replace them with either Broccoli or Spinach, ad I love both! 😂👍 I'm totally envious of you for the meat, though, as it all looked SO very delicious, especially the turkey and Gammon! The only thing missing, once again, though, is Bread Sauce, which goes so well with both Turkey or Chicken & Gammon or Roadt Pork though I love me some Apple Sauce, madevwith Bramley Appmes for the sweetness/tartness, with that, too! Not evetyone likes Cranberry Sauce, OR Mustard - which my daughter is actually allergic to!!!!! I'd give that meal a good 8/10! Lol
