Mine has the classic low drum failure with all teeth broken off. 133k miles and been driving with basically no effective reverse for a couple of years and probably 25 k miles. @@LuisFlores-tc6wz You are better off taking it completely apart and replacing all the bearings while you are in there. There are a lot of bearings in this trans and they take a beating when the lower drum goes. Follow Gary's video, he covers all the details.

Great video, I rebuilt many 604 Chrysler transmissions during the time I worked for a dealer. Never got into the 62TE as I was into management by the time they came out. There was a 5 year period that that was all I did.

Gary. Happy new year. I’m working on a 6l50. It was rebuilt by someone else. It slips in and out of 1st gear when I put it in drive. I can drive it manually through all six gears without a problem. If I start off in 1st manually. and shift it to drive it works great. I could use your help Thank u Satch

Thanks!! I have this gear in dodge journey 2009. When slow down for traffic or stop sign I feel hard shift when downshifting between 3rd to 2nd . no error codes and working ok. Oil color and level are fine the car is 75k miles. I tried manual shifting from 1-6 up and down without problem.

Regular maintenance and after market serpentine belt change. It started doing this in last 1000 miles or so.

What i would try first is a quick learn, this is done through a scan tool, it basically resets the shift adapts. There cant be any codes present in trans or engine or it will not adapt.

I have a 62TE with 125k on it that is shuttering everyday and it's not getting any better...I don't have $4500 for a shop. Sooo, I've done old school 727s, C4. Etc. This one will be a challenge.. Thankful for your videos... I did like & Subscribe... I'm going to need information where to find that odd looking special tool you pulled out for removal of a particular snap ring way in the back of trans. Thank you Gary for this video really well done. I have a 2012 Grand caravan with 120K miles on it. I was on highway and suddenly car felt on neutral, rpm goes high. Tow the car to home and then change filter and oil. Car was running fine, no slipping for 200 miles and same thing happen. I changed oil and filter again and still running well but I don't know for how long. I open the filter and they had not a lot of big metal particles and the magnet was also not too bad. I am wondering If I just change the torque converter or to be sure clutch and slowdrum. Do you have any idea? Thank you.

Ya f that 3 tab snap ring on the compounder. Mac has a small snap ring pliers with a 90 on the end I found helps. I noticed yours didn’t have the lower plastic cage bearing on the shaft I have considered putting one on my current build in addition to the updated wit drum Any thoughts?

Mr. Ferraro, I have a question? On 13.00 flat, you mention about the snap rings. On my 2018 62TE. I had a clutch disc in place instead of the pressure plate, the snap rings where in correct order. But now 75K its slipping and trans pump is grinding. Also are all the clutch packs the same color? My low reverse clutch packs are black in color?

What is the difference between a p05169720ac and p05169720ad 62TE? I have my 2014 Grand Caravan's p05169720ad disassembled based on your awesome videos. While I was at the local U-pull junkyard there was a p05169720ac sitting next to a Chrysler that someone had pulled the engine from. I can get that trans for about the same as the rebuild kit not to mention saving myself hours of reassembly. Can I use the AC in the Caravan?

Well, without looking at a scan tool, its hard to say, i hate to have you waste your time, but i personally would not use a doorman product. ive had trouble in the past, i attended a seminar about a month ago, speaking to a rep, i told him the problems i was having(another tech was there too)he was having issues to with GM products for transmissions, long story short, the rep admitted to having problems with the machines that build these transmission parts, again i hate to waste your time but at this point it cant hurt.

Thanks for the great video. Quick question. the detente arm jumped off before I really understood it. It has a bent end. Does the bent end go toward the front or the rear of the car? (I think the rear) And, does the bent end slide up next to the valve body or does the screw kind of press against it creating a spring loaded adjustment? How far does the screw go in, how much tension? Thanks for your help!

That bolt i believe has a shoulder on it, the bolt goes all the way in, just put the detent in place and tighten the bolt down. Did you see how the roller(other side of the detent) went in with the internal mode switch?

All of that gives me a panicky feeling! But reading the comments settles me a little. The local mechanic wants $9000 to replace the tranny. The car (2008) only cost $6000. I can get a rebuild kit for $450. My wife and I agree...what have I got to lose but time and $450? I'm retired, so time is not an issue. I am going to attempt it this fall. Have a 2011 Journey AWD with 62TE transmission. When transmission is cold, it will be “lazy” to get going after initial start. After a first full stop it’s almost as if it goes into neutral but after revving up slightly it’s as if it kicks into the gear and gets moving. After that it shifts OK and gets smoother as it warms up. One other thing I’ve been noticing when cold is that it won’t creep forward as it does when warm. Had a torque converter replaced about 50k miles ago under warranty. Wondering if fluid is low. I purchased a dipstick and will be checking it next day or so but I would love to hear what you think is causing this. I have an all systems scanner and have no codes what so ever. Thanks in advance.

I would check the fluid first for sure. When you start this up and its cold out do you hear any hydraulic noise coming from the trans?

Nothing that I have noticed in particular. When it's really cold out and I don't give it a minute to warm up, only odd thing I noticed is a whistle sound once I start driving. Like I said, this is only on the coldest of the cold days but I can't say for sure this is transmission related. I will look into fluid situation next day or so.

Gary Ferraro shifting appears fine until it goes back into limp. Reverse seems under powered though and takes a few seconds longer to engage than normal.

That 792 code usually points to the compounder assembly inside the trans. Have you checked the fluid level in the trans?

the fluid wasn't low, I changed the filter and refilled with +4 back to the proper level/temp. No burning smell or major metal wear was showing in the pan. Magnet had some fuzz but nothing in excess and pan didn't have much as in sludge.

I bought New a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan - 3.6L v6 Pentastar & 6spd -62TE - auto trans and have had nothing but problems with the transmission has 23,000 kilometers and the Torque Converter was replaced before 20,000km and it still bangs into D or Reverse. Transmission is a total POS. Been sent TSB for re-flashes that don't do much. Even the mechanic from chrysler told me don't use the eco-mode on these , because it makes the shift points sorta screwy. Wish i'd never bough it. Last Chrysler ever. And we've been buying them for a long time. Almost every chrysler has had transmission problems under warranty dating back to the 80's.

No they replaced it because at 18-22 km/hr going dowhill it would bang /clunk shift. And they mechanic took the tranny pan off and found clutch material all inside the pan. So they replaced the torque converter & and compounder etc. It's actually back in their as we speak. Still bangs reverse to drive. Just dropped it off today.

Hello Gary, You said let you know how it went at Chrysler/Dodge after i got my car back. -I just got my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan back from my local Dodge Dealer this week May 16th 2017 after i told them the car when warmed up a bit will clunk/bang in Reverse and even drive. More reverse. When the car is cool or just started up & the temperature is not off the peg you will get relatively smooth/normal engagement of the gears. -They told me they could not replicate the problem. But did a re-learn on the software , which made no difference. - So i went back to talk to the service manager because the transmission specialist mechanic was either busy or didn't want to look at it. I showed the service manager while sitting in the van in the parking lot, and it didn't do it as much as it sometimes will but he saw what i meant. You either get a hard-bang/clunk semi-rough-bang/clunk or smooth engagement. Also noticed when the drivers window is down when engaging the transmission it is really noisy. -We tried a few other vans on the lot, 2013 and some of them were a little rough....but nothing like ours is when placed in reverse when it decides to shudder/clunk/bang. Car presentley has 23,000km on it as of May 18th , 2017 back in September , 2016 @ 19,000km the Dodge Dealer after a test drive with me & the transmission mechanic & telling them the car is clunking /banging at 18-22km/hr randomly. They pulled the pan found clutch material in the fluid of the pan (this is 4 years after me insisting there was a problem) They Replaced at that time: -the Torque Converter -UnderDrive Compounder -Internal Transmission Seals -Replaced Transmissio Filter -Complete Replacement of All Fluid -New Axle Seals -Re-Learn again on the transmission Any ideas or suggestions would be great. I have till june 30th 2017 until my warranty is up. Well since it ok sometimes, there is a pressure port by the side cover, im wondering if theres something going on with the pressure when its smooth compared when it bangs, but another suggestion would be the valvebody and solenoid pack to see if that helps.

The oil pressure comes from inside the input shaft

I greatly appreciate the professionalism of your 62TE video. I too, in addition to most of the commentators have a P0740 on the same Trans. from a 2016 Chrysler T&C with only 72,000 miles. The stealership want $4,600 to replace the Trans. At first I had some shifting issues, replaced fluid and filter. I did note more extremely fine shavings than usual on the pan magnet. Slapped it all back together and the transmission works exceptional. However, the P0740 code comes back. I have 2 questions for you. The 1st, what are your thoughts? 2nd, do you have an accurate part number for the TCC solenoid? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gary.

I should be able to get a part number for you, i would there are a few things that will cause this code, very possible you have a bad torque converter. Other things that would caus this code are, the TCC solenoid(also may cause engine to stall) worn pump bushing or stuck bypass valve which is located in the case right behind the pump

@@GaryFerraro Thanks for your reply. I took out the TCC solenoid and tested the resistance and came up with 5.6 ohms. The manual say it should be 4.8 4.9 ohms. So I changed it out thinking I was in safe water. However, when I drove the van around for about 15 miles the check engine light came back on for P0740. I was really hoping to not have to shell out for a new trans. Crazy thing is that it shifts and drives just fine with no issues. Thanks for your help Gary.

When you take of the 2" nut on the drive transfer gear do you have to tap the indentations out or will it simply come off with the an Air Impact Gun? Also I am having trouble with the 3 mm manual shaft retainer pin screw. It seems to be stripped out. Any suggestions? Thanks

yes the pack band new resis is checking out to be right and went back thruogh it to check 4 and 6 check ball and all lip seal in the output drum and check accm seal and accm for cracks found nothing ,now when i frist build it i pull too many steel in the out put drum and it been hell, check presure at transmission line only getting 25 psi at idea 27 in revers 0 in drive took new pump apart and the gears lookchew up and the pump dose not look meahaine right

What would the issue be if when on an uphill drive the transmission won’t down shift to get me up the hill. I have to press the gas pedal more to get me in overdrive. 2011 grand caravan. Shifting through gears feels good. Not faults.

I checked the fluid level just in case and that checks out. The speed that it levels out at is 45 mph then if you press the gas pedal it doesn’t feel like it’s move with the amount pressing and it requires me to get it to kick down. I was watching the output speed sensor readings and they seemed jumpy like it would go from 1 to 30 not a smooth transition. One other thing I am not sure if it’s normal is in drive or in park at idle I here a solenoid sound like it’s turning on and off? Double checked on the faults and nothing. Motor mount deff have a lot of play. Thanks again for any response

May I ask? What was the failure of this transmission? I want to save my 2011 dodge caravan. It was rebuilt at 99000 km by Chrysler under warranty(maybe just tourque converer). It's at 197000 km now and I get a code that put it in limp mode. I changed the fluid and filter and now I get a code for a problem with reverse and the van stalls sometimes when I shift to reverse. Possible problem, maybe the cooler is plugged? Or just go for a rebuild on the whole thing. I can't afford a pro rebuild. Can a novice diy weekend warrior take this on himself. Hey Gary, have one of these in a junker of a 2010 Routan 3.8L I'd like your thoughts on. Bought it last year, had codes for incorrect ratios 1st through 6th and reverse, but also had brand new bright red fluid in it. Cleared the codes and they didn't resurface on a half hour test drive so I went ahead and bought it. Guy I got it from bought it at auction for a song and sold it to me for barely more than that. Coded for input, output, and intermediate sensors shortly after that. Had me stuck in 3rd, but if I stopped, put it in park, keyed it off, and restarted ot would shift correctly about 60% of the time. Limped it 60 miles to the nearest parts store that had them (Texas is big!), swapped out all three sensors, cleared codes, and it ran fine for another 9 months. One of them did have a fair amount of debris on it. Thing was making lots of noises, have since replaced motor mounts and the compressor clutch, fixed a power steering leak, and some cooling issues. After all that junk got cleaned up I could hear a pretty distinct whine I had previously attributed to the power steering pump. Went ahead and bought a proper dipstick, consulted the chart, and was reading 40mm cold where it should have been 10. Drained the pan 4 days ago at 98k miles, got 7.5 qts out, filled back 6 qts to get to the correct level with a new filter and gasket. Lots of glitter in the pan and the magnet didn't look great, but no chunks. Test drive that night had me shuddering pretty hard while idling in reverse the first couple of times, but then it stopped. I attributed that to a delay in fluid uptake and it hasn't reoccured since. Drove it 250 miles to Abilene the next day and aside from one late shift going 3rd to 4th I didn't have any issues. Wife called me this morning, check engine light is on for P0792 intermediate shaft sensor. No issues shifting, her dad drove it and was kind of rough on it, said he didn't have any issues either. I'm thinking that sensor is mucked up again and probably needs to be cleaned off. Any thoughts? Should I be concerned about that shake in reverse I was having? Should I consider rebuilding, or just clean the sensor and drop some Lucas in it?

Pull the sensor out see what it looks like, generally anytime i see a speed sensor code, it usually is not the sensor, but check it and see if the code will clear. I personally do not use Lucas, that will swell the seals up and usually kill the trans (in my opinion) What type of scanner do you have?

It doesn't really feel rough but you can't spin the entire thing you can only spin the cage of the bearing it has almost a half inch of upwards movement and a quarter inch of side to side movement

Hello Gary. I have a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country. Codes are P0733 “Gear Ratio Error in 3rd” & P1790 “Fault Immediately after shift”. Symptoms are: No reverse at all, D or Drive engages but “drops” or loses gear/power shortly after driving a few feet (Seems to always happen once it hits 8-10 mph). This forces me to put it o park and re-engage D or turn off he car and start it again to re-engage D. These symptoms can be duplicated every time with no exception or randomness. Any suggestions? I am hoping to repair myself. Is there a specific kit or part you would recommend? Thanks!!

I live in Germany and here transmission rebuilding is not very common and I am presently doing the very same unit. I have done A604 units before and the two are not much different as you said. However you did not show when you took the piston from the direct drum using a press. I know there is a huge spring in there as you also showed after the fact. Thank you for your reply. The problem with the unit is the 2-4 and low reverse frictions were burnt. As I said here in Germany, rebuilds are uncommon and this particular shop was not ready to take on such jobs as this so needless to say I am limited as to performing normal procedure building. Can you recommend why this may have happened and other things to check for. I suspect just a standard rebuild with a kit might take care of it. What do you think?

Gary, 2011 VW Routan going into fail safe mode, but 3rd gear clutch seems burned up as transmission just slips once it's in 3rd gear. Reverse, first and second are fine, and I've gotten it manually into 5th and that is fine. Just pulled the transmission yesterday. Is there a rebuild kit you be recommend? I am attempting to rebuild. my question is do I need to remove the differential before taking the input shaft out. I have removed the pump according to the manual but it doesn't have the differential removed to much later in the manual. the shaft appears stuck when pulling on it

The input shaft is attached to the drum, you do not have to remove the diff first, it should pull right out, if there is some damage it may not come out so easy

On this trans, there is no "raised" area for the pan gasket to seal, the 2 surfaces are flat, when you use a pan gasket on the flat surface, it usually leaks, for this i would use silicon

I have 2010 Chrysler town and country with this trans it shifts and drives fine but when hot if I reverse up a incline without throttle it will shake unless i give it more gas which isnt very safe when backing up also doesn't seem to hold itself from rolling forward like it should but will not do it when cold? Reverse seems to work fine anywhere flat. do you have any idea what the issue might be?

And yes sometimes while I driving I can hear a slight whine coming from the transmission mainly when speeding up I just bought this van so I have no idea if the fluid or filter have ever been changed it has 145k miles fluid level looks good and doesn't smell burnt or anything weird. Drives great no issues on flat surfaces just not sure if trying to change the fluid and filter could make it worse.

Emil, What ended up being the issue. Mine did the same thing the other night and is at my mechanics now. He said it needs a new tranny so we are getting a used one to put in it but I would like to attempt rebuilding the old one instead of exchanging it for the core ($50). The car acts as if it is stuck in neutral and wont move in any gear just revs and then grinds when going back into park.

Gary, I have a 2016 Ram Promaster 1500 that has this transmission supposedly. There is a harsh banging sensation as I shift from neutral into drive while the van is moving. It happens in about 70% of the time at any speed since bought it used a year ago with 11K miles on it. Any ideal what could be wrong? Harsh going into drive feels as if someone hit the floor under my foot with a baseball bat. Other times its less harsh. And sometimes it's completely smooth like all the other automatic cars I have been shifting in the past 40 years.

Happens on all promasters I have one to it is the trans hiting the control arm. Design flaw, nothing in the tyranny makes the sound. They should upgraded to a stiffer transmission mount to avoid it. I get it if I hit the throttle to hard in reverse. Sounds crazy buts its not a problem. I'm sure if you look around underneath the car you will see were its been hitting. Would suck though if it cracked the bell housing. These transmissions really suck though. So dumb they used the tyranny from jeeps and caravans in a huge van like that.

This code will not clear unless you reset the V.L.P Counter and then clear the code. This code usually comes with another code. The 1745 is informational only code. Do you know anyone with a snap-on scan tool?

No I didn't count the clutches . My bad . So being spooked now I paid the trans shop to go through the whole thing . They said I did a good job and it's now back in my car running great . Now to rebuild the one I bought off the internet that I only got 45 k out of .

Wife's 09 town and country failed the other day with out any warning other than slow to engage drive after backing out. 48000 miles, fluid isn't burnt, not that dirty, doesn't seem to slip in low or reverse, codes p0732, 735, 792, come up instantly after shifting into 4th or 5th not sure wich one tried clearing codes half dozen times but no matter how gentle you drive it kicks back to limp mode after a certain shift point. Any ideas what might have failed,and is the slow to engage drive related? Thanks Ed

Hello ed, The P0792 is a transfer shaft speed sensor code, this sensor is located on the side of the trans, on the outside, not internal. Its very possible that this sensor is no good causing these codes. Have you had the fluid level checked on your car, you need a special "tool" to do this? So basically either the trans is slipping causing the speed sensor code(p0792) to show up or the sensor is bad causing the gear ratio error codes. First have the fluid level checked, this can cause issues if low.

Its the outside one closest to the backcover of the trans by the left side axle, the one in the middle is the output speed sensor.

I guess you can check it with an ohm meter, im not sure what the spec is. You would need a known good one to compare it to, i will look tomorrow to see if i can find the spec on it. Also, ive seen this on the 4 speed units, havent on the 6 speed yet but right where the sensor plugs in, make sure the harness is good, maybe do a continuity check at the connector and go a few inches up the harness. If you have access to a scan tool that shows live data, you can actually see if the sensor is reading or not... Im thinking, i have a 62TE coming out for me to overhaul, i can check the spec on the sensor. How often does this happen, everytime or intermittent ?

@@donmalay5345 Could be tricky, side cover would have to come down, pan dropped and filter removed, there are 3 pipes that go from the valvebody to the trans, to make it easier i remove the linkage but it can be done without removing the linkage, if you do the job, change the TCC solenoid too, they go bad all the time.

@@jeffreydungo2280 There is no gasket, just silicon, i would clean it down and let the car run to confirm if it's leaking from the side cover
