Gary, if you like the mashed turnip and potato, try rutabaga's in the fall. We found we like them as well as mashed potatoes! Jess from Roots and Refuge recommended them last fall and I started some in peat pots this early spring and they were awesome! God's Blessing to you and your family!!

Hmmm you can let your turnips get as big as rutabagas and the roots don't get woody/pithy on you? That's interesting! We're growing our purple top turnips very close together as well this year in a container, but I didn't plan on letting the roots get that big, we're growing them more for the leaves.

I don’t have no nitrogen but I do use low-nitrogen fertilizer. Neptune’s Harvest (kinda pricey but my veggies LOVE it) has two that I use. Early growth i use Tomato & Veg (2-4-2), and when blooms start to form (or I want to entice them to form) I use the Rose and Flowering (2-6-4) bottle. It’s good stuff. The only downside I’ve found is that fungal gnats seem to love it too. 😏

Gary another question how are you fertilizing your corn? Mines is at 20 24 inches high I already gave them 10 10 10 side dressing about 6 inches i know im suppose to hit them with nitrogen about now do i try to find a fertilizer with 20 0 5 or can I hit them with my nitrate of soda? I can only find fertilizer with that high nitrogen that says grass and weed and they cost a good amount just for the corn idk what do you say.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

So it is up to you. I just give them 5-1-1 fish fertilizer. More often than not. The synthetic types like Expert or Miracle Grow are like a 24 nitrogen That is more that you would need. When you rotate in new cucumber and tomato plants can you drop them where your mature cucumber and tomato plants were? Or do you have to find a new place in your garden for them? I just installed 3 small 4 sq ft beds over the weekend (only one thats deep...10in) and I want to maximize this space. I have a cuc started in a container that I was hoping to just pull up and refresh the soil and drop another in to. What would you recommend here? Oh and what to plant as a garden for the 3 beds ( im in North carolina 8a)

Idk how you managed, Gary, but I'm impressed. I'd either have to be out there in a full Tyvek suit, or my video would have a million cuts from editing out all the gag reflex and running around making weird gross-out noises. Something about "hard bugs," I just can't. But I'm glad you can, and I surely thank you for it! These vids are always interesting, informative and pleasant. 💚

Help, Gary. My peppers were looking wonderful yesterday! Today their leaves are looking, "rusted" and a tiny pepper has a shriveled end. I have several jalapeños and bells all in containers. Its been overcast last couple of days. I'm in the Charlotte, NC area. What could have happened overnight? Love your videos and info, been watching long before I started gardening.

Don't have cicadas where I live that I have seen, but if you are lucky enough to have them, try eating them. Grab one, pull the wings off, (yikes) pop that sucker in your mouth and chew it on down. Grab another and repeat. I have tried this with roasted grasshoppers. Toss in a bit of garlic salt. Not the most delicious thing to eat, but a taste treat for something different. Native Americans used grasshoppers as a food source, why not these fascinating bugs. Maybe try roasting them first with garlic salt. Hummmm! Bug eaters, unite (or is it untie ?) HA, HA.

Cicadas may be the problem with your blueberry bushes. The females lay their eggs in the new growth at the ends of tree branches. The ends then fall off and then the larvae move on to their 17 years underground. You have a dense population of our red-eyed visitors and the females may be having problems finding the ideal places to lay their eggs. You may need to put a garden cloth over your bushes. I am not having similar problems here because of the large number of trees around us. They will be gone in a few weeks. Good luck.

Gary, are you going to use the morbloom fertilizer by Alaska (0-10-10) on those peppers? I was thinking of mixing that with their fish emulsion that is 5-1-1 half and half as a cheaper alternative to other liquid fertilizers such as Neptune's Harvest, which seems very expensive. If I'm not mistaken, mixing them together half and half would make it a 2.5-5.5-5.5, which seems like it would be a good mix for flowering and fruiting, and it would be half the cost of the Neptune's Harvest Tomato & Veg. What do you think?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. I was thinking the same thing of mixing. But first just the 0-10-10. Cheaper is good and plants don't care. That is the correct math. Either 1 gallon of each at full strength. Or 1 gallons and each at 1/2 strength makes the 2.5. 5.5 5.5. Do you sell a fabric pot made in similar fashion to your wooden radish containers? Something like 6" wide x 12" tall by 4' long? Would such a pot dry out too quickly to be useful?

I’m trying companion planting this year, so far it’s working pretty well. Haven’t had to spray anything and I hope to not have to at all this year. Can you please provide videos about companion planting?

Garden is looking great. Do you continue to hit your plants with water soluble through the season. Or just until they’re established?.
