The goal is to manage down garden pests and diseases. It is not your fault if problems show up. Wetting leaves when watering as the source of problems is a myth and I explain why. Document when problems show up in your garden and start a prevention plan.

It also helps to know 'PEST' cycles and plant ahead or behind the stage when they are active. If your planting 'HYBRIDS' you can pick the ones 'bred' to be somewhat 'pest free' too. I had 'Horn Worms' my first season but not during the second, I planted my Cherry tomatoes AGAIN and a Hybrid DETERMINANTE slicing tomato a bit EARLIER than that season... no Hornworms at all! I haven't graduated to growing from 'seeds' yet, I know that's a little more INVOLVED and I don't have the 'space indoors' (or the nerve, lol!)

Gary I love your gardening advice. You're my fav gardening channel. I do have a question about the organic dust. Doesn't the rain wash off the dust and then you just have to keep reapplying? I'm thinking a spray with neem oil and essential oils and biodegradable soap might work better because it is able to soak into the leaves and therefore stay longer. It rains almost daily here in Louisiana so I'm kinda doubtful if I should bother with the dust here. Thanks

I know it's ramblings but I was curious about the apple disease and what you were pre-treating with. You started to explain but jumped right to "they're going to start, and it's starting to show up.. so I'm going to get my spray out.." and I'd like to know what is showing up (might be rust or scab from your panning shot) and what do you use to treat this mystery disease?

the fungal and bacterial issues in your garden can be controlled by biologics if you are willing to treat early and stay steady. Garden friendly fungicide is one good one but quantum total is another good product. Establish good bacteria and fungi on your plants early and you wont worry about them late- its a fools errand to play catch up. Research korean natural farming and you wont even worry about this problem but it takes a while to learn.

Vine borers kill my zucchini plants all season long, even into late autumn here in NJ. This year I will cover with cloth to attempt to keep the moths off. It is so frustrating knowing zucchini is such a prolific plant and I can't grow any because of that darn borer, and been trying since 2013. I wonder if anyone has had success in preventing borers using imidacloprid systemic drench? I hate to use chemicals but I REALLY want some zucchini : )

Right now, my bigest garden pest is my cat. I think I finally outsmarted her. I made and installed low tunnel hoops in my 4x8 raised beds, the ones she like to dig in, and purchased bug netting to cover them with. I harvested a few cucumbers, zucchini, and beans today, and processed enough beans for ten meals for two people. I'm in the process of chipping up the plants, mixing them into the soil, and planting a new crop of beans. I have six cucumber vines sprouting, and replacement seedlings for my beef steak tomato plants, two Roma, and two Dad's Sunset. My Bonny's Best tomatoes aren't doing even close to as well as they were last year, but last year, I planted them late, in July, and they grew and matured in cooling weather. I am hoping, to get them through the heat of summer,. and that they will spring back with new growth and production after the peak temperature passes.--right now, 95F plus temperstures in Alabama. Fortuneately, my garden is shaded in the hottest part of the afternoon. I am expecting to start harvesting tomatoes in a copule of weeks.

though I learned not to net when there are still flowers, as it deters the larger pollinators like bumblebees. Wait until there is actually fruit. : ) Ooh, cool fact I learned this week, Gary: bumblebees you see April through July are female; August through October, they're males. I grow fennel for the butterflies, assuming I'll get none once they're done with it.

Gary I followed you last year about tomato problems, I found two plants with what looks light early blight, I was spraying with milk every week (old alabamia gardener suggestion) from last year. Didn't seem to work for me, since since two have the early blight. I believe you said hydrogen peroxide at 6TB per gallon kills blight. Do you think I can just spray it every week to keep the blight dead. I caught covid and pneumonia, left me weak and got behind in gardening. But almost caught up now.

Good morning Gary! My strawberry plants are swarming with fungus gnats. They're in a rectangle planter and I moved them outside a couple days ago after the heavy wind had passed. Plants don't seem to be suffering because of it, YET. I was hoping mother nature would take care of it. Maybe today I should dust the strawberries with DE since I don't have many flowers yet. I've been holding off I don't want to harm the beneficial insects.

I’ve tried using your peroxide treatment to kill the fungus gnats but my potted garden has billions of them! I live in apts where they overwater the grounds so it’s a huge problem. I’ve tried neem oil as well, apple cider vinegar and the yellow sticky things. I did overwater because we had really hot days and then it got cold 🥶. Is there anything I can put down besides sand to keep the gnats from laying eggs or a barrier to keep them out? Thank you for ALL your videos ♥️🙏

The chipmunks don't just eat they store everything so they don't stop until everything is stripped whether it's ripe or not. They even take green strawberries and tomatoes. I saw a fox in the neighbors yard so hopefully there will be less critters. A chipmunk got caught in the bird netting one year and it completely girdled the blueberry bush trying to chew free. I also found I had to constantly rescue birds caught in the netting. I like that solid fine mesh row cover fabric but I wonder if it will cut down on the sun to much? Thank you for the ramble - LOVE these. Question for your squash plants: Have you tried peppermint or rosemary oil as a deterrent? My understanding is the Vine Borer moth "smells" these plants - so perhaps damping that aroma may help? OR - using the ag fabric over them? My only success for squash plants was complete coverage from cradle to grave - and hand pollinating. However, I never used the oils. I now have them (from your shop) and .. I think I will try it as an experiment this year. Thank you sincerely for all your knowledge.

Have you had problems with fungus gnats infestation in your greenstalks? They are swarming all around mine an in the soil. I also have soil mites that must have been in the potting mix (identified by my county extension office). They said the mites are not harmful to plants, but I can't stand seeing all those tiny bugs crawling in the soil. Have you dealt with these before? Any advice is appreciated. I have tried several types of organic pesticides, but haven't been able to get rid of either pest. Will I need to replace all the soil? What would I do with the soil that has bugs, as I don't want them in my garden beds?

So potting mix brings them. I don't have any trouble with it. Outdoors I never really had to deal with them sorry. Replacing the soil will just give them a new home. Love your videos. I've been an avid follower for about 4 years now. Can you do a video on how to lay out your garden veggies, or rather where to plant what where if you want to save your seeds. For example this year I'm planting 4 different varieties of squash and I want to be able to save the seeds but I read last year that they can't be by each other for cross pollination reasons so I didn't save any.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching. Tomatoes are self pollinating so it is hard to get a cross. Squash is at risk because pollinators travel. I would really space the best you can and pick a female flower when it opens from each plant. You can catch them. Hand pollinate with a viable male flower on that plant and then close off that flower. Mark it with some string and save that one. I don't really save seeds often so I might not be the best resource. Taking notes each year, and then notating on next years calendar, is a great way to be on the problems in time. I like the idea of planting at strategic times.
