Our rhubarb has been on our farm for a century or two. In our years here, it's been relocated, dug up to share with friends, mowed over at season end. To harvest, we "unplug" stalks, holding close to the bottom and giving a satisfying tug. Thinking you should do the same every time a flowering stalk appears, to make the season longer and more tender stalks. Tip: after lharvesting, remove tops (leaves). Wash thoroughly, chop into 1" pieces, freeze in single layer on sheet pan. Bag frozen rhubarb and use in all seasons. Love your videos. You've been a big help on a lot of topics.

You plant so much stuff Gary. Sometimes isn't it overwhelming. You should really take some of those starts to a farmer's market and sell them. Others would love that. I understand how easy it is to just plant plant plant, but you can only eat and preserve so much. I wish I had more room so I could plant enough to feed my family of 6. But I do the best I can.

Growing zones are *wild*. My cool weather crops have all bolted or been harvested and used already and I'm getting ready to put in nightshades this week, and I'm horribly behind on a few things because of a bout of pneumonia and putting all my functional time into plant sales. I have to start my cool weather crops in August to plant out in September or October, if not earlier, and while I envy you the spring growing season for all those lovely brassicas I don't think I'd trade for the fact that if I'm willing to really baby them I can grow tomatoes and peppers as perennials. (To be fair, I'm not, I usually take them out in late November or December, but I could, and I get a looong, glorious growing season for them.)

"My wife and I" was correct.' I had a rhubarb plant, in full sun, that never turned red and didn't taste good either. After 3 years, I dug it up and threw it on the partially shaded compost pile, minus the leaves. This spring it started growing in the compost pile with nice ruby red stalks! Since it is towards the back, I'm going to leave it there and see how it does this year. Looking great so far. The raised bed that I removed it from has a hearty clump of Lemon Balm which I grew from seed 4 years ago and now there are 6 more big clumps that self-seeded there. So I'm wondering if the Lemon Balm was interferring with the rhubarb? Or does rhubarb just need a more highly fertile soil like you would find in a compost pile? Or does it prefer less sun?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN6 ай бұрын
Thanks. I dont think it was the lemon balm. Less sun in my opinion. Ive been told it even grows in mostly shade. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Neem Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Peppermint Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Rosemary Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C

I grow a lot of kale and mustard, with all my other brassicas like bok choi, cabbage, collards, etc, and find that in my garden it does nothing to deter cabbage worms (I'm assuming that's the white butterfly your referring to.) In fact I find them on my kale every year. In my garden nothing deters them except a barrier like insect netting or frequent spraying of BT.
