Your primer problems are exactly why I Only use Lacquer Primers, thinned with Mr Levelling Thinner. As an alternative try any brand of ordinary Automotive primer, decanted from a spraybomb & thinned again with Lacquer Levelling Thinner, as that contains additives that assist when using Lacquer Primer on plastic. My Preferred Primer is either Tamiya Lacquer Primer OR Alclad, but I have heard good things about SMS paints and Primers also. IF you do use a spray bomb auto primer it may need a light sanding & a was in water before any overcoats. Once a properly applied Lacquer Primer is on, it is there to stay, barring a good chemical remover. Acrylic Primers do vary a bit with adhesion. Best advice: RTFM about the primer you choose.

It does look a very good kit of the P-47. As you have said its a shame there are no seat belts, but I suspect there are after market ones. I've not come across rub on decals for models but I do agree it looks like a PITA to put them on. Again I wonder if there are some after market water slide ones. When it comes to drilling out pin holes for weapons roll fits I tend to drill out the pin holes with a 0.5mm drill. This way at the early stages of build I don't have to decide on the weapon or pylon fit because when the model is more complete and ready to paint I can either drill out the hole(s) to the correct size or use a tiny drop of CA glue to close the hole.

Lovely! 👍 One question though; did you forget to paint the corresponding bits of the D-Day stripes onto the gear bay doors, or is that how they really appeared on the aircraft? Overall though, a very neat job, and it really looks the part! 🙂
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
I've seen various pictures with all sorts of variations, one of which didn't have the stripes on the doors while others did. Others also have a black stripe around the fuselage (airbrushed in at the time), others don't have the black. I think this ship had plenty of coats of paint on it!

Great looking build, Gary! I love the color scheme, as it really makes the aircraft pop. I built the Italeri boxing of this kit a few years ago. Really enjoyed how well the kit went together and the excellent decals Italeri included with the kit. I did mix some aftermarket ones from FCM to do a particular natural metal finish P-47 as flown by the Brazilian squadron in Italy during WWII. The recessed detail on this kit is very well done. I share your pain with dry transfers, as I just finished a 1/48 Patton tank that I decided to add serial numbers to. They were 1/16 of an inch in height and had to be burnished one by one. Put me off using them again!

You've done Gabby proud Gary. A very nice looking P47 but it is strange why they added those rub on transfers. What compressor do you use? I've been looking around to get one and there's one about £80 but I'm not sure if it's that price for a reason

I use a Timbertech compressor, costs £63 here or £85 for the one with a reservoir tank.

No, it's a refillable watercolour pen that I put my decal solution into - I used Microset. It makes applying it to a large area easy for fitting larger decals!

My two primers of choice (in my very limited experience!) have been Stynylrez (although you must use acrylic thinners - no Mr Colour Levelling Thinners or you get goop) and Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 which is fab (and of course perfect with MCLT).

Hi Gary again an excellent video,the kit has built into an awesome p47D,i have been using xtracolour enamel paints for years also Humbrol enamels and i have never had any problems with spraying either of the paints,i have no problem with them pulling off the aircraft either, i also use Alclad metallic paint for any schemes similar as yours another excellent paint,the only other paint i use is Tamiya acrylic,again well done mate.

Great job, Gary! Despite that kit fighting you so hard, you definitely turned a pig's ear into a silk purse. Kudos! How was that 2-piece cowling? In every one in I've ever seen or gotten my hands on, there's a @ 1mm top & bottom difference in height between the sides. I always toss the kit parts and replace it with a Monogram 1-piece cowling.

@@garys_stuff I'm wondering if they retooled the one part to be correct after so many complaints. If I remember correctly, the right side was bigger than the left. It was much thicker, so, to get them even, you had to either grind down the top & bottom of the right side, or build up the left side, both of which would dramatically screw up the shape.
@AnthonyBrown12324 Жыл бұрын
This kit is not in the same league as the Tamiya . For assembly , detail or anything else . For instance the super charger is visible and included with Tamiya also the large hinges for the flaps and spars for the wings to insure good alignment and dihedral angle. which is surprisingly steep on the P47 . This kit maybe cheaper though . I have made both manufacturers P47s

Why do people like yourself ping pong invasion stripes with perfect Straight Lines the Invasion stripes for put on the aircraft 24-hours 4 the 5th of June with all that aircraft being painted they used any paint brush to hand and it was always done by I they weren't always straight on the aircraft they were wanted and in some photos and videos you can actually see where they stopped at the randles the Invasion stripes when not perfect
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
First of all, "people like yourself"? Second, yes the paint was often applied with a brush but (a) I can't believe they just said "black and white stripes on the wings, off you go" without saying how wide and where. This suggests they at least marked out the lines, in chalk even, using some kind of guide. Maybe some were masked off with tape so the lines were where they were supposed to be, so the lines were a bit straighter and more uniform than you suggest. I think the density of the white varied, not necessarily the edge. I suspect it also had a lot to do with what equipment was available at any given station. And (b) once you go down into 1:48 or smaller scales, the error in straightness of line I may make by not using masking tape are probably much greater than the errors on the actual aircraft. I'm not a coach painter. Finally (c) I'm not making this for a museum, so the model ends up as it ends up and I'm happy with it. But thank you for your critique. And I don't know what a randle is. All the best, G
