I've used dime store picture frames for dioramas before. It also leaves you with a small sheet of glass to work on. It's dead flat for cutting tape and stencils, and for snipping etched parts. I cover the edges with tape to eliminate sharp sides.

I have only just found Gary's channel. I can assure you most people of a certain age would have had the idea. Given all of the extras to recreate that Katy. So it is a major leap of faith that you were the only person to think of it. Anyone that loved the original film, Gary included, would have had that idea. I bought the Airfix for Icr cold and the Gecko for the Queen. Both with relevant dioramas.

Gary great job, as a note Concertina wire (Barbed Wire) generally has support poles spaced along it which makes it harder for someone to drag it out of the way, a few poles might make it easier to shape.

That's what I thought, but in the film there aren't any. Probably just got some wire unravelled for the shot! Maybe a few cross-frames now and again might work.

I need a dust free chamber as well as long as it keeps flies out as well. Varnished a model today and 1 minute later a small fly decided to land on it right in front of me and couldn't take off again. Had to get the tweezers out to remove it, fortunately the varnish wasn't dry so you can't tell it was there.

Gary, that is a stunning model and diorama... 🙂 Beautiful results! To my shame, I've still never seen the film 'Ice Cold In Alex' (that I know of - may seen as a small boy, but can't remember!), so I'll have to rectify that soon! I like that Airfix gave all the right decals without being obvious about it (even having the small "Katy" name under under the bonnet serial numbers....). A nice touch, without troubling any licensing issues! 😀 Great stuff; I've enjoyed watching this build, and am going to have to hit that purchase button on Airfix's website... 🙂

Bravo, Gary! That looked like a lot of fun! Lots of great hints and tips as you built it up. It's the perfect setting for the K2 as you've modelled it. Apart from adding a figure for scale, I would add a final touch. Grind up some chalks to match the colour of your groundwork and dust up the Katy, heavier towards the bottom and wheels, to integrate it into the base. Thoughtful and well executed! Cheers!

Gary, for the sandmat, could you get a strip of thin corrugated cardboard and just push the staves into the ready made corrugations between the layers? BTW 12mm at 1:35 scale is 16.5" in old money :) Re painting it, perhaps paint it /before/ rolling it up and fixing it to the fender? Paint it and just leave one small area untouched for gluing, then stick it to the fender. Then just weathering to do when it's stuck down. Re attaching hooks.. perhaps solder them and then just file the join down until you're happy with it? That may make life a bit easier :) The map is a //lovely job// btw.. very impressive :) The only /tiny/ criticism is the road should be at least twice the width, as there's nowhere for vehicles to pass each other at the moment.
@garys_stuff2 жыл бұрын

Looks great Gary, simple and very effective. I think the idea of using a picture frame for the base is ace. Wouldn't it be nice if someone could market a set of figures to match. Cheers Michael. I may hold off on building the Gecko kit until there is a set of figures. Someone MUST be thinking of it, surely?
@stevesstuff14502 жыл бұрын
@@garys_stuff : Well at least the Gecko comes with a very unofficial figure of Princess Elizabeth, as she was then.... Mind you, seeing a different review of the Gecko looks like the engine cowling/radiator grill is too wide and chunky, whereas Airfix have it looking correct! Maybe a diorama with the Gecko having both engine covers opened (so the bonnet doesn't look too fat), and Her Majesty herself stood next to the green version could look pretty good! Just be needing a nice muddy English diorama for it...!! 😀

Classic mistake everyone doing an ice cold in alex diorama forgets....Ice cold in alex k2 had its body and cab removed from it's original 4x2 chassis and mounted on a 4x4 canadian Chevrolet truck chassis so it could cope with the sand,and the emblem to the radiator grille top was missing.,otherwise nice model.

Looking forward to building my first kit in over 40 years. Have to brush paint, and struggle with my disability, but with patience and help from my friends,I hope I can do it justice. Also, does anyone have an opinion about the 2nd generation Humbrol acrylic for brush painting an entire model?

Thanks mate, very kind! The few Gen2 paints I've seen seem to me to suit brush painting better than airbrush. I still can't get the dilutions right!

Vallejo Air acrylic paints are very thin, and with a very little extra water, they brush-paint very well indeed; may need a second coat, just use a fat brush on large flat surfaces, and go steady and smooth, and it'll look great! Vallejo are readily available on Amazon UK, and not expensive... Good luck with your model 🙂
@oldgitsknowstuff2 жыл бұрын
THAT'S a very nice model ! Good diorama. So you didn't fancy the uphill scene then. Lol. How come nobody swore at Sylvia Sim when she let go of the starting handle and Katy sped off back down the hill. I did...and I was only watching !! Anyway, you deserve a Carlsburg lager, it's worth waiting for.
@garys_stuff2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! I did fancy the uphill scene but no-one does figures for it! I think their response to Sylvia messing things up was a commentary on comradeship under extreme circumstances, especially as Anson hadn't exactly covered himself in glory some of the time. And good old stiff upper lip in the face of adversity - we get setbacks but we buckle up and overcome them.
