Not surprised to see you have a silencerco charging handle fail. We ordered a couple for our shop just to check them out. I actually have an OG Gasbuster charging handle from PRI from like a decade ago and a Radian SD. Pretty neat to see all the way from back in the day when "huge USGI-lookin' shelf and channel at rear" was the only thing anyone had thought of beyond sticking locktite in the rear of the channel to plug it up, to today where the vents and cuts in the Radian are like a crude semblance of silencer baffles for inside your receiver. Honestly, these charging handles are good but they're a pricey band-aid for a symptom you could more directly treat with your other recommendation of tuning your gun better and just committing to running suppressed all the time like you'll want to anyway.

For my BCM 14.5, I made my own "Gas Buster" BCM Gunfighter 4B charging handle where I dremeled out a small gas channel on the top side and a larger channel on the bottom side that both redirects gas to the right (like the famous PRI). It also uses a beefy high-temp RTV gasket seal in black silicone. This is the best method from what I've tested myself while shooting suppressed with no eyepro.

One thing to note with the radian SD is if you're right handed, and have a 45° offset dot, the holes redirect the gas out the ejection port more. So when you're using the 45° dot you get an extra amount of gas to the face even with a really well tuned rifle. Also springco has stronger buffer springs that help with slowing the rate of the bolt unlocking, which helps. That's the route I went. Still really sucks though, my rifle has .068 gas port size(carbine), orange(308) SpringCo spring, h3 buffer, with a sandman K(556cap) and shooting m855 I still get over gassed unfortunately. After a long string of fire or rapid 5 rounds. But 1 or two shots that are slower I'm ok

You can also form your own gasket with some RTV on pretty much any charging handle. I work in an aircraft factory so I took an 'expired' tube home (company sets the expiration date, can't use it at work so it was either throw it in the trash or put it to use elsewhere) and started doing some experimenting. If you glob it on when it's locked back and let slam it home you can leave it there overnight and use a razor blade to cut the shape you want. I got this idea from another channel a while back and decided to try it for myself. Does it work? Yes. However like Hop says in the video there's only so much you can do without tuning the gas system itself and using a more modern suppressor design.

I have now tried the Breach as well, on a friend’s gun, PRI was much more effective, but the Breach was better than the Radian suppressor CH, I found it to be absolutely useless.

Great video, it looks like if you're concerned about gas there are significantly better options than the charging handle.

Great rundown on the charging handles. If you test it, you'll find most of the gas coming back to your face is coming out of the chamber, not from the gas tube. This is why the whole piston thing for suppressed guns is silly- the only part of piston guns doing any good is the adjustable gas blocks they tend to come with. Suppressors slow the release of gasses and they release in both directions. Use adjustable gas/added carrier weight to delay bolt opening, allowing more gas to go out the front, then block off holes/gaps near the rear of the receiver with RTV liquid gasket from your local auto parts store.

I’ve had a lot of luck with the Bootleg Adjustable BCG. My 10.3 URGI is way overgassed & I’m left handed. I didn’t want to mess with the gas block so I tried the Bootleg. It worked so well that if I ever have this issue with another di gun the Bootleg will be my go to. Made the gun have virtually no recoil as well.

Great video sir. My vote is short stroke piston rifle for suppressor use, Radian charging handle for everything....

Most of the ones I've tried have been worse than the standard with the RTV latch bodge.... The warhammer 308 one was even worse than just straight GI somehow.

The BRT EZTUNE gas tubes with an H2 buffer are my go to. No moving parts like a adjustable gas block with the same effect. After doing my first pin and weld, I didn't want that level of complications that may need me to have to drill and eventually reweld my muzzle device to do any parts changes. Haven't gone back to adjustable gas blocks since. Even if gas blocks may be able to fine tune a little better, the simplicity and reliability of what is essentially just a stock tube with a downsized port makes up for any shortcommings.

I like the Raptor SD, but it was only a very small difference vs the normal Raptor I started out with. Your observations are spot on tbh; if you shoot more than a few rounds at a time, it all ends up being moot/equally gassy.

I have a 16" Zev Core Elite. Roughed up and put some liquid gasket at the back of the charging handle, then some CLP on the back of the rifle so that it wouldn't stick to the wrong places. Closed it up and 24h later i trimmed of some excess. Haven't been a problem for me since!

I use a Riflespeed adjustable gas block, Raptor SD charging handle, JP Enterprise SCS and a Rugged Razor 7.62 can. I get zero gas in my face or at least I don't feel any. I only use 2 of the settings on my gas block. 1 for suppressed and another for not suppressed. Don't need tools and the adjustment collar sticks out about an inch from the handguard. I really want their .625 gas block for my pencil upper. Unfortunately the one I need is on backorder.

Strike industries also makes a plastic extender called the ISO latch that fits onto their Phantom charging handle. It's tall enough to sit flush with the rail and fits pretty tightly all the way around just like the silencerco (minus the rubber seal).

Nice work. I love my AXTS (Now Radian) raptor on my SPR/DMR but for my fighting rifles I'll roll with my Griffin Armament SN-ACH (Supressor Normalized Ambidextrous Charging Handle). It's the beefiest in the industry, is smooth as silk, impossible to miss and does what it claims. Most people don't know it exists but if they'd try it I think many would prefer it.

The best ejection port gas exhaust mitigation I’ve seen so far is the new Ruger SFAR. There are various bleed ports meant for catastrophic malfunctions through the barrel extension and upper receiver, as well as the carrier, that redirect suppressor-generated back pressure exhaust.

So, I own 4 of these. The milspec (duh), the Radian SD, the PRI big latch, and the SiCo GDCH. I love the radian the most as a charging handle, but, the least for suppressed use. The PRI is middle ground for latch design and gas mitigation. The GDCH was the absolute best for gas to the face, but, my latch pins also walked out of my first one. I'm on my second one through warranty and it seems to be fine.

Just on those loose pins, you could pop them out, apply some Loctite 638 shaft locker and replace. You’d have to make sure it was on the fixed part and not the moving part, but should help out.

I was just going to get a radian for my first build, but since most of my rifle has ended up being Aero Precision anyway... maybe I'll just get an AP charging handle. I've already decided to go with their enhanced upper, which means my hand guard will be AP.... I just keep ending up with AP parts.

As a lefty, I had to really design my silenced 12.5 from the ground up. I did a geissele super but I'd love to swap it out to anything without that stupid ass brand. I did have a adjustable gas block AND a bootleg bcg but that seemed like overkill. So I just went with the super and the bootleg with the sandman S can. Great info though and cuts out some of marketing nonsense on these guys. Now.... Time to get another breach!

You should check out the Bootleg Adjustable BCG and see what you think of it in terms of reducing gas to the face when firing suppressed. I'm a lefty, and if I don't use various things to reduce the gas (adjustable block, gas reducing charging handle, etc), one side of my face will be black at the end of a shooting session....and it's unsafe for me to take even a few shots without glasses because I take particulates to the right eye if I do. Surprisingly, the Bootleg BCG did more to solve this for me than any other produce I've tried, and it's not even advertised with that purpose in mind. There's a valve that allows a small amount of gas to pass through the gas key before being directed downwards. This almost completely eliminated gas to the face for me when firing suppressed. The only downside is that because it's directing a bit of gas downwards, it does get the inside of my magazines a bit dirtier than standard...but that's easy to clean and not an issue at all in a real-world situation. It helped even more than an adjustable gas block...plus it lets me easily change settings with my multitool any time I want.
