That is great for the person that has to cut limbs out of their yard one a year. Not for cutting whole trees. You should see how many cuts it will make on a full battery charge compared to a tank of fuel

Another note: You had to cut on the outside of that tree. It was leaning a bit toward the pond and may have leaned a bit more onto the cut and pinched the bar and chain. Because of the situation, you were unable to cut on the backside. As an older guy who worked with carbon-zinc C and D cells years ago, I am amazed with modern battery technology. I have a string trimmer that has a Li-Ion battery. It is light weight. It is quiet. I get 45 minutes of solid performance. It recharges quickly, Pretty good deal for my suburban lot. I have a 120 Volt line powered chain saw. Obviously, I need an extension cord, which I have. The new battery powered units appear far superior. Josh- Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. SR.

Mains powered saws do have a few advantages. First of all there is no battery to keep charged that can go bad and that also makes them lighter and easier to handle when working for a few hours. They can also have more power than a reasonably sized battery powered tool. The negatives though are the limited range, the risk of tangling your feet in the cord or cutting the power cord. I've done the later a number of times and the extension I use just keep getting shorter every year...

Mate even my old 18 volt ryobi cheapy would eat that tree with no effort I have cut down huge trees with a very small old ryobi but you have to know how to use them, dont force them let the chain do the work and make sure they are very sharp. Now i have the 18 v brushless ryobi and a 9 amp-hour battery and it works a treat, again as long as it sharp. I have a 52 cc 2 stroke unit and leave that for the very hard aussie hard wood. Something is not right with that saw, looked like a toy compared to any of the other battery units avaliable today??

I have sawn the equivalent of well over 20 full cords of firewood over the past two winters with my battery saw. It sports a 16 inch bar and the wood I've cut on is all 12 to 25 inch logs left from a gas pipeline right of way. Makita brand. I like it. I have two gas saws but haven't needed them. The 6Ah LXT batteries have held up well. I use them on a weed eater, leaf blower and chain saw. No pulling, no ear protection, no gas mixing, no problems. I use about 500 watt hours of battery storage to fill a wagon the equivalent of a small pickup with 9" length rounds. Replace batteries twice per load.

I have the pole saw and am considering a blower and chainsaw. One pro for battery I haven’t noticed discussed much yet is lack of smoke and fumes indoors. I’m a woodworker, and there are times when I need to cut large beams (like 6-8 inch beams). I’ve had to move outside to do that. But with a battery saw it would be no big deal at all to keep the operation inside. It would not be a great “only” reason to buy, but it is a nice bonus! One con I’ve not seen discussed is storage of batteries: recommended storage is at 40-80% charge (between 2 and 3 LEDs). Thinking about it for me, one of the big draws would be instant use at a moments notice. For example after a storm and you need to get to work early in the morning but you find a limb over the driveway or road. There is still a lot you can do at 80% charged, but it would be nice to not worry about leaving it 100% charged. Likewise, Stihl recommends storing at a temp between 50-68 deg F. That leaves out leaving it in the trunk of the car for emergencies for the most part. These are relatively minor issues and it’s not Stihl’s fault; how a battery will behave is just chemistry and physics. Thanks for the review, well done!

I have a Greenworks 40volt lithium battery chainsaw. It is okay for small jobs. There are 3 shortcomings of any battery chainsaw: (1) you can only cut wood for a short period of time before expending the battery and needing a recharge; (2) as you discovered, if you press the chain against the wood, it jams; (3) the initial cost is higher, but you do save on gas and maintenance cost in the long run. $229 for the saw, battery and charger at Lowes. I would recommend it for small jobs. I wouldn't recommend it if you are going to cut down a tree or make piles of firewood for the winter.
@adrockey
@adrockey 4 жыл бұрын
I think the problem you had was the electric saw is the build-up in the drive socket. As soon as you pulled it out of the tree and ran it cleared out and ran fine look at your footage. All chainsaws with dog down if they get build-up at the bottom of the drive sprocket. Don't drain your fuel at the end of the year. I run Sta-bil through all my small gas engines, lawn mowers,weed eaters and leaf blowers before putting them up for winter. I leave a half a tank in them also. Then in the spring I fill them up with fresh fuel and I usually start up just fine every year. I have a mowing business and I've had weed eaters last over 13 years before needing a carburetor. All Stihl brand of course.

Thank you sir, I did watch from start to finish. While this saw is not for me I do think it would be good for some home owners or even new home owners that have to deal with small trees and shrubs. It does have its appeal in that market. I on the other hand do lawn and landscape for side hustle, removing smallish trees in the city on occasion. I currently use a poulan pro 4218, cheap as it is. Hope to upgrade to a Stihl of similar size in the future. Thank you again.

Motors produce maximum torque at zero rpm. Engines are inefficient (about 80%), and require rpm in order to produce max torque. As the bar moves through the work, the teeth grab, and are momentarily halted by the wood. At this instant, rpm goes near or to zero - where a motor produces max torque. This repeating cycle is similar to the effect from a water hammer or pneumatic (impact) wrench. This is why motors can outperform engines in an application such as running a chain through wood. In addition to better performance, the biggest advantage, in my opinion, is to be able to liberate oneself from another 2-cycle engine. There's an inverse correlation between the number of 2-stroke engines in my life & my sanity. And I know some guys' machismo will stand between them and electric saws for a while. But, as the stigma fades, they'll capitulate. Merry Christmas!
@geraldmoore6257

One brand, Makita, uses a motor with the rotor on the outside and the stator on the inside and runs at much lower RPMs. This makes it even more efficient than normal brushless motors. Because of its "lever arm" effect it produces so much torque that it doesn't require gearing like all the others. The outer spinning magnets have high inertia which produces smooth, stable operation, even at low speeds.

@@justinbelt8032 I've paired one with a 16" bar and full chisel chain. Cuts faster than the 14" bar with Oregon anti-kickback that it came with. I've sawn the equivalent of over 20 full cords of firewood from large timber 12 to 25" in diameter. The Makita doesn't stall easily, not any more than an equivalent gas saw. The 2 stroke is notorious for no power outside the power band around 13K rpm. They get stuck and you don't have the torque to get the chain going in the wood. Makita claims their top handle saw tested @ 25% faster than a Stihl 30 cc gas saw and I think it uses the same battery and motor as my rear handle one. I believe that claim as I've had a cutting race with my neighbor and his small Stihl. I didn't ask him how many cc's, but the Makita kept up and exceeded his saw. They also claim 3 sets of 5Ah batteries is equivalent to a full tank on the 30 cc gas saw. I believe that is realistic as well. I use the 6Ah batteries and could fill a good size pick-up with 3 sets, no problem. The Makita uses a set of two small hand tool battery packs rather than a special yard tool battery.

I use a chainsaw a couple times a year, at most. Consequently, I almost always have to fight it to get it running. Every time. I also have to mix new gas every time. The electric chainsaw is ideal for my use case. We use a trimmer much more often, and we switched to a battery trimmer years ago for the same reasons (fuel and maintenance issues), and it was a by far excellent decision.

I purchased the DeWalt cordless saw this year, 60 volt, 9 AH batteries, 16" bar, and it works great. I cut over three cords of wood with it this year, some trees were 20 inches in diameter, no problems except for keeping batteries warm in temperatures below freezing. Cordless is the way to go if you are a small scale wood cutter.

Website is deceiving says "Only $4095", but doesn't tell you it's ~$1,500 of required extras - installation, switch plate, retailers make you absorb shipping costs from florida, then there's a few thousand $ to install all the hydraulics if you don't have it already, then there's taxes, unless you're Ag tax exempt.

I bought a 36 volt battery powered saw last year, with me being paralyzed it’s hard for me to start a gas saw. I cut up around 3-4 cords of wood with it for winter. I did put a 16 inch bar on it and have had to cut both sides of a few trees to make a complete cut. Is it slower? Yes and the batteries last a decent time and but according to how hard you push it, the batteries can drain fairly quick. So for me it works great and does what I need it to do. I don’t like asking for help so it it gets me by just fine lol. Btw mine is a makita but I have no problems with the other brands, this one was reasonably priced at the time.

I have a Makita with 16 inch bar. I replaced my 14" with a 16" Archer bar and chain. A full chisel chain works best, the saw cuts faster and more total cuts than with the shorter bar that came with the XCU03. The 16" Archer chains are $10 and the bar was $20. I like the Archer chain much better than the Oregon anti-kickback chain. I've cut the equivalent of over 20 cords with mine so far. Hard to estimate because I use 9 inch firewood. I've got well over 1,500 cubic feet ricked up and a pile that I'm working on. I buy the 6Ah batteries. They don't get as hot and last longer. The last set (2) cost me only $125 on eBay. So $65 each is getting reasonable for the high capacity LXT batteries. I use around 500 watt hrs. for the equivalent of a small pickup load. I need only swap out batteries twice. Taking 6 18V batteries for a load is always enough. You are right. I suspect most other platforms or brands perform equally well per watt hour of energy. They are all brushless. However Makita doesn't need gearing like all the others with its direct drive outer rotor motor which may be more efficient. I would like to know if it is more efficient. I do like the upper handle safety latch defeated (taped down), since this gives me a minute or two before the saw shuts off in order to manipulate the rounds of wood. I can throw them in the wagon and return to cutting before the damn thing finally shuts off and I have to turn it on again. I just have to be mindful of this.

I'm gonna need to get you some ducks for your pond and a cute floating house to go with it....end of next year though.....I think they're safest on the water.....whatever you do, don't add turtles. I hear they grab their legs and pull them down until they drown so they can eat them.😲 Until then, Merry Christmas and a Very Blessed New Year to you and the Mrs. and the animals.🌲⛄🧡

I have a 12 inch electric chain saw I use it as a trim saw. The one I bought had nylon gears that stripped so I replaced them with metal ones. Works great now.

Battery powered tools are great for early risers on a farm. They can do an hour or more of work without worrying about disturbing anyone from a noisy engine. I’ve gone into the Ego Powerplus line of tools. They need to make an off-road e bike for farming. 56v power! Maybe someone out there received their dream of a battery powered chainsaw this Christmas.

Thanks but, no thank you Josh. Think I'll stick with my old trusty 290 Farm Boss and my much newer MS 250. I've had my Stihl Farm Boss for 20 plus years. It has never failed me yet.

I've been looking at these myself. The Homelite XL I have been using for general cleanup for 30 years has finally given it up and my other saw is just too heavy for limbing. Not having to fool with a balky motor would be nice, but that is a lot of money for what it is.

Love your channel. One comment how about doing a video on safety operating of a chain saw . Maybe you already have and I missed it. I just noticed that when you were operating the saw it looked to me like your face was directly inline with the chain. Maybe bad camera angles, i was taught to keep my face out of line of fire in case of kick back. Please don’t misunderstand me you have a great channel.Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and yours

One thing I’ve noticed with the battery saw I helped a friend cut a massive oak with was it kept bogging even when we were just bucking logs it really really struggled which leads me to believe that gas saws are better

Buy non ethanol gas for the small engines! Seems like the electric would be good as a limbing saw once you use a big saw to drop a tree. Probably less tiring than limbing with a big saw.

No sir it didn't have a brand new chain like the electric saw...and you saw the results....I don't think it made much of a difference in making an informed decision on electric saws...they have their place for sure..but this one is more of a "small job" saw

I like the electric saws for certain things. If I was pruning trees, electric is awesome. But for an extra $200 for electric, that buys a lot of gas! Not sure if the electric would even pay for itself in the long run. But electric will always work unlike carburetors that get clogged up if you put bad fuel in them! I think it would be interesting if they made like a bigger 24" electric saw that ran off a few batteries for companies that go to houses and fall 1-2 trees or clean up limbs. The quietness is nice in a neighborhood.

Check out the DeWalt 60 volt electric chainsaw. It is one the top rated electric chainsaw according to some comparison testers by several independent testers. A big plus for the DeWalt, the 60 volt battery is backwards compatible which allows you to use it on your 20 volt DeWalt tools. It automatically knows to lower the voltage for the 20 volt tools but will last three times as long on a charge as the 20 volt batteries. It being one of the top rated and the battery versatility made me go with the DeWalt for a grab and go little saw. I looked at Stihl and Husqvarna electrics both before buying the DeWalt.
