This problem is so common I think we all should be cleaning our flame sensor at least once a year before the heating season. if you call a tech it will be $250 out of your pocket. We are warned to change our filters but no one tells us about this. I just went up in the attic and cleaned mine.

If you hadn't cleaned the fan inducer vacuum port I would have never been able to figure out my problem. It was clogged with rust. Finally fixed 6 years later. I can't believe it was so easy. But first replaced flame sensor. But vacuum port was the issue. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the videos! My furnace was doing this same cycling. When I called for service I told the tech I thought it might be just a dirty flame sensor. He immediately thought I knew a thing or two about the furnace. We started taking in furnace jargon and I actually knew what he was taking about. It's nice to have this type of knowledge so they can't try and tell me I need something I don't. So yeah, it wasn't a total shit show. 😉

Thanks Steven you saved the holidays with your tip. I work on all my major appliances when they break down. When my sister in-law called that her gas boiler zone one was not working I went to your old utube videos and because I forgot my tool bag. I didn’t bother try to remove the flame sensor. I managed to cleaned it with an old Dollar bill and voila the boiler is working so far for 3 straight days. Thanks again and Happy Holidays

If you were my furnace man I would have it cleaned and check regularly. My last guy put a open fan motor in my outside AC unit. Than a year later after it failed again, told me it was planed obsolescences and the new motor would be $600. I trusted him for years who knows how many times he screwed me. I took the fan apart myself. Bought the right enclosed fan, the right capacitor and put the wiring back the way the schismatic showed. It cost me about $150.

Some older mobile home standing pilot furnaces... when the pilot is lit for the first time of the heating season, will short cycle on & off, with each ON cycle progressively lasting longer and longer until the unit will finally stay on continuously until set temp is reached at which point t-stat will shut it down. I remember someone telling me long ago it was because the furnace was so cold due to sitting in cold weather so long before starting it up, but can't remember the exact reason cited. Is it because the lower (as opposed to the "upper" aux limit (manually resettable) snap-disc-type limit (the "high" or primary limit) is tripping prematurely and has to warm up a bit before it will let the unit run continuously toward set temp?
@paulrobilotti92945 жыл бұрын
I had the problem, the repair man came, said the following furnace to big for my home, duct work may not be able to handle the load, make sure your vents are all open, filter clean, what was happening was the safety switch was getting to hot and was turning off the furnace cooling and it went on again, so being the furnace was putting out to much heat for my system he lowered the gas pressure which causes the flame not to be that hot and yes the home heats up as quick as it did before and let the fan go a little faster, everything now works.

Keep in mind that when doing these "no-heats," if you're going to give a tune up, give the full tune up so you're respecting your customer by fixing the issue for the full year a tune up is good for. AKA; cleaning full inside cabinets, toothbrush to "dust" off any access, take out burners and clean with wire brush, make sure all wires are GTG, check filters, temp rise, CO levels, gas pressures, etc. to ensure this issue won't happen shortly after. Explaining it better to the customer also helps tremendously on why getting routinely preventative maintenance's can save a ton of money and catch issues before a no heat occurs.

Flame rods make us money. Lol. I clean them with 000 steel wool or scotch brite pads. Was taught never to use sandpaper. The silica can embed in the rod and melt with the heat contaminating the rod and making the unit continue to trip out.

If the heat exchanger was cracked, wouldn't you read 0 CO in the supply air? Because the heat exchanger has a more negative pressure than the ductwork when the blower is running causing supply air to leak into the heat exchanger?

That furnace looks just like my Goodman GMP. I had a similar issue but my furnace control board was bad ($78 with free shipping). Cleaning the flame sensor didn't fix it for me. The vacuum hose on mine wasn't kinked but it did look a little crusty so I cut off the crusty part and reinstalled the hose. The inducer motors are loud as hell on these furnaces so I replaced my inducer assembly with a newer Goodman inducer fan that runs with much less noise. I also replaced the cracked plastic chimney that connects to the inducer. I hear that Goodman has a recall on that plastic chimney but the distributor wouldn't give me a new one for free. He did sell me a new metal chimney for $9.00 though. Who puts plastic in a hot air furnace vent? That's just stupid.

@weakyweaky80198 жыл бұрын
They leave an orange tag with his company name /phone etc and also room to date and brief summary of repair. When customer opens door to look at furnace he sees your company name so he will call you again. And next tech has an idea of previous repairs.

Good video. You use carbon monoxide detector to check for cracked heat exchanger all the time? Does it just beep or tell you a reading of how much it's detecting?
@skipd91646 жыл бұрын
Learn what your flame looks like. It usually stands lall and straight. This is old school but if you see the flame dancing you could have a problem. Im not talking all flames just in little area. I hated hot air gas heaters . Its alot different now with co detectors. One of the first things we would ask is anyone sick.

Can a flame sensor actually go bad?
@sknight03917 жыл бұрын
BADAZZ93STANG Yep, they can go bad. Porcelain can crack and then you will short to ground. The porcelain is there as an insulator. Most furnaces need at least 1.6 uA to run properly. You can take a reading with your meter before and after cleaning and be amazed at how much it goes up. In the 3uA range is good.
@BADAZZ93STANG7 жыл бұрын

Just a metal stick that bleeds off voltage when in contact with the flame, which lets the controller know there is flame. They get coated and the coating doesn't conduct, therefore controller thinks there's no flame and shuts it down. Clean down to the metal and it's good for another 5 years.
