Learn a lot from your videos and had an odd find myself today. Gas boiler quit and had to replace the step down transformer. Notice burned wires between the step down and the limiter. Got the boiler running but watching it like a hawk. Sure enough flames coming from the bottom left burned the wires a second time. Turns out there was a mouse blocking the lower left gas burner tube, almost completely blocked. A real pain cleaning it out but back up and running. Quite scary actually.

Before winter hits I disconnect the AC for fear of ice or wind damaging the power lines. Never know when a surge or damaged neutral drop may occur. Hope the rack out was pulled for the winter. Fused disconnects are nice belt and suspenders for 240 appliances. Nice work Steve.

a question from the uk is there a way of protecting the home when this happens like some form of over voltage (surge ) protection ?
@rolandmcphail50608 ай бұрын
in the u.s there are whole house surge protectors as well as hvac only surge protectors. not sure how well the hvac specific units work, they are not that commonly installed in my area.@@valvemonky4734

Just a word to the wise.... noticed all the rust. When I got a new gas furnace, I put down for them a couple concrete patio slabs for it to sit on, because a two inch flood in a basement from a water heater or drain backup is common and not welcome in a steel furnace cabinet. For a couple bucks, saved future rust.
@jblyon28 ай бұрын
Hell, even just being right up against a damp basement floor can't be good for it. First boiler in my parents house was right on the concrete. The bottom rusted out within 14-15 years. The replacement for it went on blocks and is a solid 30 years old now with no sign of rust on the bottom, and it's a Leakham of all brands.

So with the transformer if we divide 120 / 24 we get 5 so it's a 5 to 1 ratio. Take 175 and divide by 5 and we get 35. So the board might have seen 35 volts coming in for a minute or so. Not high enough to do any damage.. The transformer on the other hand, that primary winding couldn't take that 175 volts too long and it popped open the winding.

Yep, open neutrals can cause all kinda havoc on electronics (which literally EVERYTHING is nowadays). I’m surprised the main furnace board didn’t get fried, maybe it wasn’t running when the neutral got cut. Microwave might just be a tripped or burned up GFCI breaker or receptacle since it’s in the kitchen. Hopefully you removed the tape from those door safety switches on the furnace. Nice job, Steve!

It took me calling three times to the electric company telling them something is wrong the lights in my house would flicker on and off once in a while they looked at pine tree surrounding telephone pole and said nothings rubbing wires much. then finally they looked down our whole block and an arborvitae rubbed through wires and was shorting it out when it rained and such.

It won’t be long before meter box surge/overload protection is common place as the grid continues to age and fail. In other regions of the country houses burn down often because of this.

I had a customer that I went back to in the spring to turn the water back on for the spring. I went to turn on a light and it didn't turn on. I went down to the cellar and discovered the electrical panel had caught on fire. As it turned out the neutral connected with one of the hot legs and supplied 120 volts up the neutral as the line went through a tree of branches. Luckily the panel was pretty air tight and snuffed itself out. I told the owner she could send repair bill to power company since it was their lines cause the fire. She declined. It was about 3,000 to replace the panel and service. No damage to appliances as those breakers I had turned off in the fall.

Anytime a neutral is lost the transformer is gone rarely ever does the board get affected in 1998 my wife was 8.5 months pregnant we were at the drop zone where I skydived in my trailer and lost a neutral thank god I had a transformer for some reason in my personal vehicle she was so bitchy but that was my first time experiencing that
