Used to work maintenance for a large store long ago and every week the voltage would go up to 175v for about a minute and wreck all the computer equipment. Power company was called about a dozen times and it was never fixed while I worked there. Never did figure out what caused it but I thought it was an intermittent short in the windings of the transformer that fed the store. Could never get them to replace the thing because it never did it while they were there.

Sounds like an open neutral for sure. Although usually that will vary with load. The other side of the line would be 60vac.

Could have also took your volt meter around the house and probed all the outlets. Bet ya you would have seen the same 185V. I work with electrical engineer designers at my job and we diagnose weird faults like this all the time.

Maybe damage from a recent storm. A friend of mine had a similar issue a couple years ago and it burnt out pretty much everything that was turned on that wasn't run by a transformer rated for 100-240v.

That’s why you need your own neutral at the meter base , because when the power company loses their neutral you still have one and you don’t fry anything up. In our area power company not responsible. You need 2 ground rods 8’ apart very cheap way to keep a ground

Good call Steve. I’ve run into issues before. A lot of houses here from the 80’s have shared neutral for branch circuits. My house does, but fortunately issues are always somewhere else. Lights going dim or bright on changing loads is a big clue. I know electric, but I watch you in order to help DIY other things. You’ve saved my ass on plumbing before. Thx!

I had a neutral issue at my house years ago, squirrel went into the pipe coming from the street and ate three quarters through the neutral wire, voltage would change every time I turned something on or off. Could have easily burned down the house.

Similar issue happened to me several years ago. Power company's line crossed and back fed through the neutral into the house. Fried everything electronic in 8 houses on our block. TVs, microwaves, computers, furnaces, stoves. Fridges and anything plugged in got cooked. Power company reimbursed for all damaged equipment.

Definitely a neutral problem. I just had this problem at my mom’s house. Some of the receptacles started smoking is how she found out there was an issue. The voltage will look normal at the panel until a load is put on the system then you will see a huge difference between L1 and L2. She had like 200v difference between the two legs and it almost burnt the house down. It was a broken neutral at the step down transformer on the pole in the street.

@flyer617 8 ай бұрын
I've seen this before. You can usually tell it's a neutral issue if there is voltage between neutral and ground. There's going to be more than one problem, though; a bad neutral from the street and either a bad neutral-ground bond in the main panel or corroded/missing ground in the house, such as the wire to the cold water pipe from the street, or bad/missing ground rods. At this point the house is dangerous.
