Never actually worked on a furnace but hearing the steps of our furnace kicking on for so many years and now visually seeing it happen during your description it instantly makes sense. Hearing the motor kicking, then the click of the gas and then the next step the four flames kicking in is how i hear and tell if our furnace is out of whack.. because my pilot light went out and it kept shutting off but everything else kept running and I could hear the difference before I opened it up to see. Thanks for the video!

@@WordofAdviceTV lol Your video gave me the confidence to light my furnace because my pilot light is out atm. I was thinking there has to be a way to light it without the pilot light.. but I was hesitant to do it at first, thinking I hope I don't blow the house up. Let me youtube it real quick. Your furnace looks exactly like mine, too. So that helped a lot.

You are a great teacher with the best instructions I have seen of all the videos I have watched on KZbin. (hours) I met a Spanish speaking gentleman last night who has had no heat since cold weather hit. Over the phone, with his English speaking daughter, I was able to determine what the code for their Amana gas heater was. She counted 8 flashes, and we found on the door that this was the igniter. You showed exactly what I needed to know to diagnose if it really is bad and how to replace it. I am going out today to test it for them and thanks for showing me how to ignite it so I can get them some heat. I am just a DIY guy that tries to help people who cannot afford to hire a professional. If it is beyond what I feel is safe for me to do I will help them find the best Professional locally. Thanks. I will have to let you know what I find.

Thanks for the video. My igniter failed last Friday night. Started getting cold and when I checked the thermostat it showed heating in progress, but furnace wasn't running. After resetting (shut power off, then turned back on) I watched and listened to what was going on. Inducer motor came on, gas came on, but know ignition. Went to youtube, found your videos. Figured out igniter was bad and how to change it and also how to manually light it to get through the night. Was able to find a parts supply shop open on a Saturday, paid less then $20 for part and had furnace back up and running in about 10 mins.

I've always been in commercial HVACR. One company I worked for, the owner's Mother-in-law's furnace, an 80+ like this one, had the same issue. I got paid to sit in her basement all night and keep manually lighting her furnace. The next day they sent an apprentice up with the new ignitor. I never asked why he didn't just pay the apprentice to sit there all night! I got a nice paycheck that week, and brownie points with the owner's wife for taking care of her mom. (It was very cold that night.) Those brownie points were better than the extra OT in my pay! FWIW, I used my MAPP gas torch; it was easier than a cigarette lighter or matches.

@@gregtenney7279 That sounds like a weak igniter. I have a feeling that if you replace it all will work as it used to :) The other possibility is that the igniter is positioned not close enough to the burner. This should not be the case unless you moved/took out the igniter recently.

OK so my 2002 Goodman went down last night. A video by A Handle on things went step by step trouble shooting and saved me from ordering a new circuit board. My igniter went bad. A couple hrs on line and phone 4 days earliest delivery. What a racket. Local $50+ ebay $27 to $38 free ship. So glad I came across this video to get me going but not with out bumps in the road. I used a BBQ lighter right on top, works good. I turned the thermostat to 80 so I could shut it off when I wanted to. It ran for 3 or 4 min and shut the fire off. I was thinking the over heat switch was turning it off. I was right. I have over half the registers closed in rooms I don't use. I opened a couple trying to keep the over heat switch from shutting things down but no good. It was 55 out today so we were OK but now it's 35 so I went to the basement to cycle it get the temp up so I could go to bed and sitting in a chair relighting it when it shuts off.. OK OK I'm getting to it. I glanced over and saw the gas shut off valve. I started closing it till I just barely noticed a reduction in flame and noise. PERFECT! Back up stairs with a beer and TV till It got to 75 and shut it off. Going to bed. By the way, that over heat switch has been working like that for 11 yrs. I think I'm going to leave the flame where it's at. Anything wrong with that? 10 yrs I replaced the vacuum switch. 16 yrs now the igniter.

As a 87 year old thank you. Just had the service replace a cracked igniter. Good to know in the future at least someone could lite the furnace for me. Was without heat 24 hours down to 54 degrees.

Those older American standard/tranes are absolute beats. Until that heat exchanger goes, hang on to it my friend. Those and the York diamond furnaces are the best I’ve ever seen

Thanks that explained a lot. Unfortunately my emerson igniter attaches onto/into a sheet metal box. I do not know if the burner assemblies are easily accessible to light manually.

I had success by using a heat gun to blow hot air at the burner area while the igniter was glowing. After this initial assistance, the furnace continued to successfully ignite itself. I believe the problem was caused by frozen igniter parts. A self-feeding problem due to the furnace not running for days leading to the furnace parts becoming too cold than normal. The draft inducer motor was broken and it took a couple of days to find the part and replace it. I run into the ignition issue after replacing the motor. You should be able to use a hair dryer if you don't have a heat gun. I believe using a space heater or similar options to bring the furnace closet/area to room temperature could work. Please remember to practice safety and not rely too much on comments like mine.

Definitely a good way to get a furnace going during troubleshooting to make sure the heat exchangers not toast or the gas valve isnt gone. Pretty easy way to lose your eyebrows if you aren't careful though. A good trick is to make sure you have a standing lighter flame nearby the burner as soon as the gas valve opens. Its only going to open for a few seconds so not very much gas will build up. Good video as usual!

Thank you Mark! I appreciate the additional input and the eyebrows warning! :) I should have mentioned that one should not have their face right in front of the burners when they do this...

@@WordofAdviceTV I have a question. How do you keep a furnace ignitor going white? My furnace ignitor turned white and wouldn't work in November, so I ordered a new one. I installed a new one and it worked until today. It's directly in front of the heat and it's white. I've seen people clean it or gently sandpaper it but I think it's beyond this point. The ignitor is directly in front of the flame so it's guaranteed to stop working if I order a new one. What's the solution here? I have a Trane XR80 brand. Thank you for any help in advance.

I'll give this a shot. Last year the same thing happened, and the HVAC guy charged me 70 dollars just to manually start my furnace. I'm sure he didn't actually change out the ignitor. Luckily I'm a grilling enthusiast, and I have long shift lighters!

Great tutorial on lighting the furnace. My igniter isn't turning the bright red that it should and when I pulled it out, it had the tell tale sign of a white line across the igniter. I tried lighting it with a long patio grill style lighter but something is causing it to blow out while shoved up in there? I can't even keep it lit barely while I hear the gas turn on. Also, this doesn't seem anymore complicated than lighting a gas grill so not sure why I'm having trouble.
