My friend’s family owns 20+ gas stations. They told me that only 7% of gas in the US comes from Russia. The majority of gas actually comes from Canada. It’s mainly the EU that is effected by Russian oil. So yes, gas companies did trick us by gouging the gas prices.

Thank you Biden . Maybe we should have opened that pipeline and we wouldn’t be so dependent on Russian oil
@eudofia
@eudofia 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you asked. The US had been increasing oil imports from Rusia since 2015 even under the former administration. The pipeline you mentioned was to bring in Canadian oil. Last time I checked, Canada is not part of the US, do that means the US is still dependent on foreign oil. And one last thing, oil is an international commodity and it's price is determined at the international level. Even if the US were to produce all the crude oil it consumes today, you will not $2 gas at the pump. US oil producers will still be selling their domestic oil at international prices and gas would still be expensive. It's called the free market economy.
@eudofia
@eudofia 2 жыл бұрын
@LeChink James Yes, if you increase supply, then prices will go down. But as soon as that happens, big banks and hedge funds will lose interest in investing in domestic production, and to make up for the shortfall refiners will just turn to importing oil because it is cheaper. A barrel of US oil averages $40 to produce, compared that to about $10 in Saudi Arabia. Investors are not going to pump in money into US production if the barrel of oil falls close to $40, for the simple reason that they are not going to see a large return for their investment. At $40 a barrel, yes you'd get $2/gallon at the pump, but not energy independent because most US production would have shut down, as it happened in 2015, and also during the pandemic. Right now in the Permian Basin in Texas, oil rigs are springing up like mushrooms because oil prices are high. Once all this oil come online in a year's or so time, there is a glut in the market and oil prices crash and you get cheap gas for some time. But then drilling rigs are sent back to the yard and workers laid off. I work in the oil and gas industry and I have been through this booms and bust cycles many times. Again, just because you have abundant crude under the ground doesn't mean you get cheap gas. Drilling for oil is very expensive and complicated and investors want a big bang for their money. Conclusion: low oil prices, cheap gas, but lower US production. High oil prices, potentially more US production, but expensive gas. You cannot have both. And also international events like a war in the Middle East or in Europe as of now, and a pandemic also affects oil prices.

I agree with some of his points except that we were energy independent before the new administration took office and declared war on the energy industry. The talking point of unused leases is deceitful. A drilling lease requires BLM and EPA permits for roads, retention ponds, and facilities. Those permits are being stalled bc the admin declared no more drilling on federal lands or offshore. Higher energy prices is part of the plan to push the Green Energy industry.

Are you and everyone you know willing to drive 8% less? Of course not, very few people are doing any “optional” driving. And yet there is 8% less oil to go around, so the prices will have to rise until it hurts (and then consumption will drop 8%…) And under capitalism, the companies make a lot of money in the process. We could adopt socialism instead and then the companies wouldn’t get rich, but that doesn’t magically give us 8% more oil: we would still need to cut consumption.

Yep, OPEC has been working hard to manipulate the price of gas and oil since Obama was in office, intentionally flooding the market with excess supply to drive the prices down and drive competitors out of business. In the face of OPEC's actions, independent providers and smaller conglomerates have no choice but to either reduce their output and shut down refineries, or take a loss... and few are willing or able to take the loss, so they roll with the reduced profits instead. The pandemic further amplified this, with demand dropping to record lows worldwide. And now that the world is on the path to recovery, OPEC is intentionally limiting their output to drive prices up again -- my inner pessimist believes they're doing this to trick competitors into increasing their production and expanding their operations just so OPEC can flood the market again (probably within the next year), drive prices to rock bottom again, and make their competitors take a loss. In the meantime, they're ALL using any excuse to raise prices while they can to maximize their profits and recoup their losses from the last few years. None of this is dependent on Russia, it's all being driven by oil corporations. Russia and Ukraine are just VERY convenient excuses for them.
@luke_cohen1
@luke_cohen1 2 жыл бұрын
@@olencone4005 That's essentially what's happening here but I should add that OPEC isn't a company or in the private sector. Instead, it's an intergovernmental cartel of 13 oil producing countries. The oil companies in these nations are state owned conglomerates (eg Saudi Arabia's Saudi Aramco) and they do whatever their governments want while providing the government 60-95% of their tax base (the definition of a petrostate). When you take both OPEC and franchised gas stations (aka small businesses that were nearly destroyed by the pandemic and trying to recover) into account, it creates the situation you see today.

@@shutupimstilltalking Yes that's because he doesn't understand marginal-cost pricing. This is the practice of setting the price of a product to equal the extra cost of producing an extra unit of output. For example- stocks are set at the last price closed. Millions of shares sold for $100 but the last sale closed was at $105. All the shares now cost for $105 to buy. A key factor* in pricing Oil is the price of the last oil barrel sold. If it cost $120 to get that last barrel to market and it sells for $140, then the price for oil is $140. This despite the fact that oil wells produce oil at $10, $40, $75, $80, $100 per barrel. The market price is $140 and the people who can produce it cheaper just make extra money. When the market tightens up- that last 5% of oil may be *very* expensive to get but it sets the price for the rest of the market. (there are other factors like long term contracts, volume discounts, etc. too many to go into). Anyway- it's not a conspiracy- it's *BASIC* ... I mean *REALLY BASIC* capitalism. If I'm the only guy with the last apple, I can set the price at whatever I want. I probably sold all my other apples at lower prices at a profit so this apple is pure profit anyway. But it's *my* apple and I get to chose the price. If you don't like it, then I suggest a nice banana.

You are the only one who has stacks of that sweet and soft rolls left and everyone wants your goodies. Of course you would charge a premium, even though the day before it was worth way less. That's the very concept of "buy low - sell high". However, the oil prices are not skyrocketing because there is actually less oil available but rather because on the exchange it is expected that there might be a shortage coming ... whether or not that will be true is a whole different story. So yes, it's speculation and of course some people are making a lot of money on the backs of the common people.

All the oil in pipelines, storage tanks and tankers belongs to oil companies who happen to be doing business in the US. Sadly (and predictably), with or without Russia's war against Ukraine, gas prices were going to skyrocket anyway. After two years of the world bunkering down to avoid the pandemic, all those oil companies are looking to recoup those losses. So pretty much any excuse to raise prices... is going to raise prices. And for that matter, it's not just oil companies doing this either. Anyone who didn't see price hikes on everything from gas to toilet paper as soon as the pandemic ended is either incredibly over-optimistic or simply unaware of how some of these companies work. They're not just going to shrug and brush off two years of low profits -- they're going to milk every man, woman, and child on this planet for every single penny they can until they feel satisfied with their new profit margins.

@@ragingbullalf5790 Capitalism, at least the way its practiced in the US, is a predatory economic system. Businesses rely on having large amounts of money available to borrow. Because of this, they have to be attractive to investors. That puts huge pressure on executives to create increases in profits every quarter, pushing this unsustainable illusion of infinite growth. Ultimately, workers and customers are the ones who pay the price, since they're the ones with the least power in the marketplace. The executives and investors make bank on it while the house of cards remains standing. A statistic I saw in the New York Times said 64% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck; that's a lot of people on the brink of losing it all as prices keep going up and wages don't. I'm sure the payday loan places and title loan places are all drooling at the prospect of all the poor people they will get to exploit as desperation to make ends meet leaves people with no other options. Being poor in the US is extremely expensive.

I (German) have to own up to being a long-time apologist of Putin, too - seriously, up to the last minute, I really didn't think he would be crazy enough to actually do it. I didn't think anyone in Europe would be crazy enough to start another war here. I thought NATO had outlived its purpose, and was warmongering more than being a peace keeper. I mean, here it's very simple. Europe gets very cold. They need heat. Electricity demands skyrocket if they switch to electric heat and that means tons more nuclear. Or they buy oil and gas from international markets. Russia is a huge oil exporter for Europe but so is thr middle east. Do you want to deal with Russia or Turkey, both of which have pipelines and bomb kids. Our reliance on fossil fuels is largely driving this l.

@@l4cattle927 it's not about politics, it's about global market speculation and nervousness of an oil disruption. Which makes it an opportunistic event for price gouging. The U.S. imports around 3% of Russian oil. If you translate that into U.S. gas prices, you should see around a .10 to .30 cent increase, but prices have increased by 30% or more in some cases almost overnight. It's all greed in the gas companies and politicians who have money invested in those companies. I think USA and Europe should never get into the war, but are they going to watch Ukraine suffer? and what's next? other European countries who is not part of NATO can also be next targets. Why are Europe and USA meddling with Ukraine's NATO requests? They should give a firm answer of NO NATO membership.

we already have laws against price gouging... but it is just one more thing that is not enforced effectively. We need to stop buying gas as much as possible to lower the demand, but I doubt if enough people will realize that, and if they do, actually sacrifice anything to do so. I'm not talking about people who have to drive for work and school, I'm talking about people who can plan all their errands for one day in a loop or skip some of their unnecessary outings and trips. I remember the oil embargo 40 years ago. That was a real gas crisis. This is just greed so far. Until those of us who can afford to pay more, refuse to buy more than we actually need, prices of everything will continue to rise. We can't do anything about the supply, but most of us can do something to lower our demand. The question is: Will we?
