Before all of Hank’s super science fart speculations they should have handed him a whoopee cushion. In his best Keanu voice, “I know how farts work” - this didn’t happen but would have been the best if it did. I love this show.

The comments about how did we survive in a whole bunch of gas without knowing what it was, makes me think in the future how people are going to wonder about how we survived now without knowing anything about dark matter/energy which is of course just so obvious and everywhere.

I love the brainstorm game format. On one hand just making it about who can guess faster is a bit tricky but I really love the idea of not having penalties for wrong answers. And apart from the helium plant question the questions were well suited to not be easily guessable just by rapid-fire guessing.

Cheeks do play a part in some peoples fart sounds. Specifically, you can hear the fart then moments later you can hear the gas escaping the cheeks in a slap. This can happen especially when the person is very sweaty. Ive heard this and it is hilarious.

I can't believe this is the first time Ceri ran into Paracelsus, but I'm delighted that now she has! I'm currently working on some fiction set against a Scientific Renaissance/Scientific Revolution sort of backdrop so I'm thinkin' about all those wacky guys at the transition from alchemy to chemistry and towards empiricism from spiritualism. I find it so interesting. My favorite electives from undergrad were history of science. If there are other viewers interested in these topics, CrashCourse here on KZbin, made by the same fine folks, has a History of Science course with Paracelsus and loads of other guys in it. Also I wanted to make a very intellectual comment about how funny Hank miming buttcheek action was.

I think its most species of snake! Unless musking is a different thing. But what yous described in the end bit sounds a lot like musking! Its just a horrible smell that they release from their cloaca when they're frightened and need to defend themselves. Doesnt smell like a fart, smells like death 😅😅 I have 2 snakes and ive experienced this once or twice and damn its bad.

"we lived in a soup of particles that we couldn't survive without and didn't think to give it a name until 400 years ago" The word "air" is from 1300 Atmosphere is from the 1630s or earlier The guy who coined gas referred to "vapor" in the definition you gave Etymonline: Þe ouer partye of þe eyr is pure and clene, clere, esy & softe, ffor mevynge of stormys, of wynde and of wedir may nat reche þerto; and so it perteyneþ to heuenlych kynde. And þe neþir partye is nyʒe to þe spere of watir and of erþe, and is troubly, greet and þicke, corpulent and ful of moyst erþy vapoures, as longiþ to erþy partyes. Þe eyr strecchiþ hym kyndely al aboute fro þe ouer partye of þe erþe and of watir anon to þe spere of fire. [Bartholomew Glanville, "De proprietatibus rerum," c. 1240, translated by John of Trevisa c. 1398 ] That seems to be describing the soup we live in to me. "atmosphere" comes from the Greek word for "steam" so it seems like they very much understood it, they just called it vapors. Steam is water particles in the air. Steam is water vapor, they talked about other types of vapors. Gas is other particles in what we intuitively think of as air (but actually air is a gas). So I think they had this figured out? the most important parts of it anyway, just they called it vapor.

I would love insight into what this question means. Are you asking what, for instance, carbon dioxide gas is called when it's not called gas, then the answer is either dry ice, or carbon dioxide. Some elements or molecules have colloquial terms for what they are in different states of matter (water ice steam/vapor being a major example), but scientifically you just call them by their element and the state of matter (liquid H2O, for instance, or liquid CO2) though even that can have a few more vocab words involved (condensed CO2, condensed meaning the same as liquid but implying that it has gone through a process to make it liquid)

... OH as in fuel? As in petrol? Unleaded gas? Off the cuff sans looking it up, I would ASSUME that it's because before we had cars, we had gas for fuel in the home. So when cars came on the market what Americans called fuel for cars would have probably related to what they used to fuel their homes, even though the mechanism was different.
