The music of The Ramones shaped my life to what it is today. I’m just lucky I was headstrong as a teen in the 80’s not to buy into the whole political influences from music. I listened to the music because I loved everything about it and now that I’m In my mid 40’s I find it quite disturbing that bands still try to get a political point across to the young and fragile developing minds of the youth. When I cover this song, I make a joke about how “their point of view” about Reagan not being liked but I’ll add that he was still their president for 8 years just like president Trump will be. Regan ended USSR. Germans not happy about him knocking down the wall? Please.
@brianblueskye971510 жыл бұрын
Reagan didn't end the USSR, the USSR ended the USSR. They got in a war with Afghanistan, which did them in financially. They weren't prepared for how much influence the outside world in terms of society would have on them and like any empire, it fell. Reagan had nothing to do with it whatsoever. All he did was give speeches and pose in photos as if he had something to do with it.
@likebox29 жыл бұрын
+Brian Blueskye It wasn't really Afghanistan either, the USSR couldn't really be bankrupted in the traditional sense, because the economy was completely resistant to recession, and there couldn't be unemployment, so it just kept creaking along. Every year since 1970 recorded 1-2% growth, in a permanent crawling growth, it just slowed down a lot compared to the 5% growth of the 60s, or the double-digit growth of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. When Gorbachev introduced perestroika, he introduced a reform to make the state industries more competitive, which meant that instead of judging by top-down state-quotas, internal prices were let float, and the industries were judged by whether they were profitable. The hope was that this would lead managers to be more efficient, as similar reforms led to restructuring of heavy and light industry in the West (the mechanism there was corporate takeover and junk-bonds--- this forced corporations to become very profit-driven). But what it led to instead, due to the monopoly position of Soviet industry, was to a perverse incentive to REDUCE production! The reason is that when you stopped delivering your stuff, prices would go up, becuase you were the only supplier, and it became easier to meet your profitability goal. So in the first years of the Gorbachev reforms, the industrial output actually SHRANK (this never happened in the history of the USSR, despite Afghanistan, and all that, they never had a year with less production than the last), and suddenly there were shortages of toilet paper. There were no serious postwar shortages before this. This made Gorbachev extremely unpopular, he was only more popular than the hardliners behind him. The point is that at this point, the middle-management could see a path to acquire ownership of these state-owned monopolies, and become billionaires. So when the power-structure rearranged itself around these future oligarchs, they just took over the parliament, and dissolved the state to reform it in order to allow them to take over all the industries, as they duly did, and only then did the Soviet economy completely collapse.
