This reminds me of when I was playing a game called Animals Online. Some hacker kept targeting me. So, I said that Animals Online was a terribly made game and they shouldn't have spent their money on hacks for it (most if not all of the character models were pre-made, and there were a lot of glitches) but it was their money, they can do what they want with. Hacker's friends and her start bullying me and calling me a misogynist because apparently I'm not allowed to be angry at a woman. They start targeting another guy, and calling him a misogynist for telling them to stop, basically anyone who sided with me would be called a misogynist and be bullied. Bitch, we don't hate you because you're a woman, we hate you because you're ruining the game.

I wanna meet the record executive who thought that advertising to "tumblr girls" is a good idea. Their idea of naive, fandom-centered tumblr is frozen somewhere around 2013. Since then, the users became much more jaded, are extremely proud of running the website to the ground and hate being advertised to. Tramp Stamps' targeted demographic did not exist for literal years. Whoever came up with this marketing strategy unknowingly threw these women down a pit to be eaten alive by a pack of rabid hyenas.
@elvingearmasterirma7241

Correction, as someone who semi grew up on tumblr… Us the users, did not run it into the ground. The company did, because they completely misjudged said user base and didn't listen to us. We are proud of, unlike other websites, not breaking under corporate pressure, but the corporation breaking against our sheer decision to just… not. Also The Great Tumblr exodus has further dwindled down the numbers to the truly jaded, very observant, and yes very rabid users. They were not just throw down a pit, they were tossed down into a very very deep cavern filled with not only rabid hyenas but spikes.

It still baffles me that they did this all in attempt to get popular with punk crowd. In my experience, punk is some of the easiest music to get into. It isn't about perfect production, or having sweet looking music videos or even looking that good while doing it. It's music defined by the pure message and attitude. You make punk 'cause you have something to say, and that's all that really matters. The sound can be rough, it can be simple, hell, it can sound like total crap. But that's part of it all. The rough style is part of making something that doesn't pretend to be something it isn't.

For real! I'm really into riot girl punk or as i often call it "women with grating voices further conforming I'm unbelievably gay". The music quality is rarely on point, the singers aren't perfect or often even good, and the equipment is usually cheap, but when they are singing about your mutual lived experiences and it hits your chest like you just did a bellyflop, that's what connects.

There are a ton of artists with rich parents who bankrolled or arranged their fame: Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and so forth. But they project this image of being down to earth, working hard, and being deserving without being honest about their privilege - even lying about it. I wish the playing field were more level, and I wish celebs were more honest about their privilege.
@maddieb.4282

There is only so much some privileged parents will get you. Remember Rebecca Black? That Friday music video was paid for by her super wealthy parents as a birthday present to try and get their kid into the industry and it went massively viral for the wrong reasons. And did not materialize into a massively successful music career, Grammys, world tours, or SuperBowl halftime shows… privilege gives you a boost at the beginning and gets you seen but the continued growth in the industry DOES in fact require hard work and talent.

In this case, it's a white woman who never faced racism or sexism saying "white man bad" Also, straight white men can be trans, disabled, neurodivergent, immigrants, etc. So just saying straight white man is kinda stupid. Technically one of my favorite bands ever is an "industry plant". Babymetal is a j-pop/death metal band that was comprised of three members of a massive idol company. None of them had ever even heard a death metal song before they were placed in that group by the company, with the idea behind the band supposedly driven by the guitarist from Dragonforce, Herman Li, who writes a lot of their music. However, they did grow to be quite passionate about their work, even writing a few of their best songs themselves, and they're highly respected by many major artists in the metal industry even overseas. Seeing Rob Zombie hanging out with them at a concert and even defending them to his fans was wild. Even more interesting, most Japanese idols kind of get phased out at age 18. The members of Babymetal are in their 20s now, which is fairly unheard of. They surpassed the idol industry basically. In conclusion, not all "industry plants" are bad, but the industry itself can be pretty shit.

Hearing them say that stuff? That’s NOT how a riot girl or any alt girl (just anyone in general) should be talking and singing and let’s not shame and mock men either.

I personally thought the first hint to their posership is the fact their aesthetic/fashion is about 10-15 years out of date. Fashion in subcultures still change over time, the genuine punk/alt/riot grrrl communities of today do not dress like that anymore, they don't look like the Tramp Stamps. Its like whoever was in charge of figuring out their image (be that a company or themselves) just google imaged the desired aesthetic, got a bunch of results from back when this kind of music last peaked in the mainstream (ie the 2000s-early 2010s) and just copied it as is. Like a band like Steel Panther for example gets away with dressing 40 years out of date because they're a comedy band, thats part of the joke. The Tramp Stamps weren't presenting their look with any kind of irony, it was supposed to be taken as genuine when its literally like they were going to a costume party where the theme was "Hot Topic circa 2007"

I completely missed this whole situation, but seeing just some of their photos and videos, I get that their version of punk is inspired specifically by the punk of the early early 2000s. That in and of itself isn't bad, but that era of punk was kind of like... punk on a diet. So this feels like a diet on a diet. Even the name "Tramp Stamps" feels very catered. Like it's a reference to a tattoo placement that was sort of considered "trashy" 20 years ago, but almost no one has a problem with it in real life. It's not rebellious. My 6th grade teacher at my private christian school had one and was proud of it.

As a person who was an unabashed hardcore kid as a young man, let us never forget that “punk” has been commodified and sold since day one. The Sex Pistols, for example, were a band put together by Malcolm McLaren, dressed by Vivienne Westwood, and named in part after their clothes shop. Punk rebellion has been packaged and sold this entire time.
@lizburton3840
@lizburton3840 Жыл бұрын
That's a common misconception actually! The band was already together by the time Steve Jones asked McLaren (his good friend) to manage them and the only 'putting together' McLaren did was encouraging Johnny Rotten, someone who often hung around in the proto-punk scene that Jones and McLaren were part of themselves, to be the singer. Meanwhile, Westwood wasn't famous yet when she was running her store SEX and made most of her clothes by hand with the help of her children and friends. Their 'rival' band the Clash was equally as 'put together' in the sense that their manager Bernie Rhodes also found them a singer who he thought would mesh well with the band and encouraged them to the dress in clothes he helped make. Rhodes was actually the one who told The Clash to make political songs, meanwhile McLaren was ignored and laughed at when he tried to tell the Sex Pistols what to write songs about... If you want sources, please check out the books England's Dreaming by Jon Savage and Passion is a Fashion by Pat Gilbert, both are very informative about both bands I talked about. Or just look at the Sex Pistols' Wikipedia page, it's much quicker and will still help clear up misinformation

@@lizburton3840 - This was such a charming, thoughtful, and informative comment. Thank you! I’ll need to rewatch the video to recall exactly what I was driving at, but of course you’re right that McLaren didn’t put together the Pistols in some Phil Spector-like fashion or like a boy-band from the 2000’s. And the Clash were definitely a deliberate and managed enterprise and a product of that scene. Honestly, I think it could be argued that the Sex Pistols were more authentic than the Clash, love them as I do. So your points are well taken. I do think McLaren brought something important to the effort, if only direction and a vision he gained while experiencing what was going on around Rex’s and CBGB in New York. He and Westwood seemed to recognize the importance of looks to “punk” and their take on those looks clearly resonated. I guess my point was that while the energy behind what became punk in the UK arose organically and spontaneously from the people and times they were in, from very early on it was guided and deliberately influenced. Nor is that a bad thing - Steve Jones definitely made a good choice asking McLaren to manage his band!

@@b.w.22 Thank you for such a kind response, I wasn't expecting something so nice because usually people get angry with me when I try to clear up misconceptions about the Sex Pistols. I don't know why that is, I just want everyone to be on the same page together McLaren was definitely important to the group's success, as any good manager is! He's kind of like the britpunk version of Brian Epstein, the manager of the Beatles who helped them become successful with his business savvy and media know-how, as well as helping organize their ideas into a more cohesive structure. I think people were always somewhat aware that punk would benefit greatly from 'a look' (the Ramones were certainly aware!), McLaren and Westwood (as well as Rhodes, he was a fashion designer too after all) were the perfect team to create that look with the inspiration they had from both the NYC scene and what they were seeing back home in London. Richard Hell was a major fascination/idol for McLaren and Westwood, as well as for Johnny Rotten who was a big fan But, to continue my very silly Beatles analogy, we wouldn't credit Epstein with the true meaning behind the Beatles or discredit the hard work of the band members because they had some help from him so why is it okay to do that to the Pistols? I hate to see the skill and hard work of working class boys who went through so many hardships in life be devalued or ignored... Anyway, I actually strongly agree with you that there's always been an edge of commodification and exploitation in the 70s British scene that only got stronger and stronger as the years went by. There's something to be said about how so many movers and shakers of the scene were store owners/clothes sellers (McLaren, Westwood, Rhodes, and Don Letts). It's a interesting topic. I just wanted to clear up a few things so that we can all be on the same page! Thank you again for your nice response!

It was over immediately the second they decided to each have their hair dyed a different color. Look at actual female punk bands, or even groups of friends, black and bleached blonde are probably more common. Maybe one or two could have a bright color sometimes but a group of three where they each have a candy color they always dye their hair is more pop than punk. Also, as a candy-colored hair person myself, it's also way more common to change colors a lot than to stick with one shade. I'm offended by their lack of knowledge about fashion color hair dyes lol

As a guy one thing i've always found is that there are two kinds of "girl power" music, The kind that says "lol ur like 2 inches, haha get fucked" and really appeals to a bad kind of person and has a toxic fanbase and just is creates drama. And then there is the kind that pulls up the woman herself without tearing down someone. The kind that shows that she is worthy of attention, time and is valuable all on her own.

I got a like from the mighty Z, bow before me mear mortals. Also just want to clear up, yeah I think the first kind of "girl power" music isn't real or anything like that. I don't hate it, I think it's misguided. You can't build up by tearing down. Care for yourself first.

I was a young adult of the 1990s. Back then it seemed as if bands that got big really did come up from the bottom as they tended to hate being famous, Kurt Cobain being the most obvious example. And then you've got artists like Jarvis Cocker (of Pulp) Skunk Anansie, the Manic Street Prechers. I'm a Britpop kid at heart and there are some very well written, intelligent and political songs in that genre.

@@aetherialbeing4223 not just you i'm with you fully on that, and most of the stuff they claim about guys is stuff out of the guys control (dick size, how hot they are, etc) But they are all about body positivity. Don't get me wrong, I think everyone should be able to work on their body and themselves to get themselves to a point where they love they love themselves and their body. Even straight white cis neurotypical young men. Got a small dick? You are worthy of love Got small breasts ? you are worthy of love Got a large head that makes it hard to wear most hats? I am- I mean you are worthy of love. And yes, they do seem to be fixed on sex, though I think that's more our culture then anything. Every song, "man bed in bed" Every tweet "am good in bed, sleep with me" Like if most of your songs are about sex, then what the fuck bro? touch grass.

@@aetherialbeing4223 "by saying they’re bad in bed, have small penises etc etc while also complain about men wanting sex and shit and how men make comments like that about women" it's just attacking people for the thing that you think will hurt them the most, and yeah it's pretty incongruent with body positivity. “we aren’t objects for sex but let’s brag about sex and how much we love it” this isn't hypocritical, though. the concept of women being sex objects is about their value to men, like their purpose is to please men. women can reject that and demand to be seen as people with agency and value, who don't exist just to be attractive and pleasing to men, and still be horny as fuck

If anyone is looking for the second kind, I highly recommend Tonight Alive. Jenna McDougall (the lead) is super into empowerment for all genders really, but the band also tackles some more traditionally feminine issues in their music here and there. Like "Lonely Girl" is about letting toxic friends go and finding yourself as a human being, but from a perspective that most men don't really go through in their lives. (Also it's a total JAM of a song) But yeah overall she's just really into self-care and gender equality and all that, and the band as a whole supports a lot of female artists and such as well
