NVIDIA's RTX 3070 Ti does little to help the current situation, especially considering that's silicon that could be pushed lower down the stack. Tested vs. RTX 3070, 3080, RX 6800, etc.

You can find our review of the 3080 Ti that you shouldn’t buy here: • Waste of Money: NVIDIA...
And our tear-down of the 3080 Ti here: • NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti Fou...
Our review of NVIDIA's RTX 3070 Ti Founders Edition video card looks at performance vs. the RTX 3080 Ti, RTX 3080, RTX 3070, and other cards, like AMD's competing RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, and even lower-down stuff like a 2060 or 1080 Ti. The RTX 3070 Ti benchmarks end up showing that the 3070 Ti is, at best, stagnation, or at worst, a decay in value proposition from the existing 3070 silicon. Unfortunately, NVIDIA has decided to push more expensive cards down the stack because of the current market conditions. This isn't as egregious as the 3080 Ti, sure, but perhaps that's the plan: The 3080 Ti makes this look almost sane by comparison, whereas the 3080 Ti is certifiably insane at $1200.

regardless, linus has been running in a new lane lately the last month or so. he's been coming off more of a shill, its all sponsors first with only a hot take for intel, which isn't a hot take, just THE take, and they've started writing crypto into the gpu reviews while subtly defending the use of them. it seems to be more quantity over quantity with the videos to generate ads and sponsors. idk. steve and GN are all class, all tact, and all fact. you can't argue with steve because he's just going to research before he makes a stand. definitely the first place i go for actual facts regarding pc hardware.

@mjc0961 3 жыл бұрын
@@666thsense Hate to tell you this, but it hasn't been the last month or so. It's been _years._ Maybe you only noticed it recently, but I noticed it years ago when he was interrupting his Threadripper 3000 review to give himself a wedgie to shill underwear. Or rather, that was the straw that broke the camel's back for me - I was already pretty sick of the minimum 3, sometimes 4, ads per video. They already did a sponsor spot at the start, another at the end, then they started randomly throwing plugs for their merch in between. Trying to sell something, even your own merch, is still an ad. And that many ads per video is taking the piss. They didn't even try to integrate the ads well either. This is another area where I have to give Steve/GamersNexus huge credit. At least when they throw in an extra ad for their merch, it's integrated well. When Steve's tearing down a video card and mentions that I can get the modmat he's working on from his store, I don't feel disrespected. I don't feel like the only reason I'm here is to have products sold to me. Heck, if Steve didn't say that, there would be people in the comments asking where to buy that mat from. Absolutely nobody was asking Linus where they can buy his underwear from. Also I've heard "this video was brought to you by US!" on GamersNexus several times as the sponsor spot, meaning there wasn't a paying sponsor for that video (or it was a super negative video that they didn't feel comfortable putting a sponsor's spot into) so they used that as a chance to plug the merch. I _never_ heard that on LTT, it was always paying sponsors in the dedicated sponsor spots and then extra merch shilling on top of that. And I'm sure someone will bring it up, so I'll respond preemptively. I don't care how many people Linus employs. I don't care how expensive his company is to run. I don't know if he needs to stop hiring so many people so quickly, or stop trying to run so many channels, or stop trying to get so many videos out per day, or whatever. All I care about is the quality of the video I'm watching. And like I said above, when I'm being advertised to that much and with that little regard to being subtle about it, I feel like the quality decreases. It decreased so much in my opinion that I stopped watching. Pointing out Linus's supposed expenses, that none of us actually know in the detail needed to have a proper discussion about if all those ads are justified or not BTW, isn't changing my mind on the video quality. It still feels gross to watch. I still don't want to watch it. The only caveat I will offer is that it's been years since I watched (like I said, the Threadripper 3000 review was the last straw for me). So maybe some of the stuff I said no longer applies, maybe LTT does things differently now. Although based on the comment I'm replying to, it doesn't sound like it.

But now, this is self-perpetuating spiral of ballooning prices. We can bust it ourselves by not buying or it will pop because nobody will have money left. Nvidia playing into it for short-term gain is only distorting market more. Just as Wealth of the Nations described it. They can prolong this bubble but burst would be that much painful.

Steve's review is great, but you have to keep in mind perspective. Linus and Steve both have different points of reference, and preferred baseline aside, both the reviews are valid from their respective perspectives. I personally agree with most of the points Steve makes here, but just because Linus' chosen perspective doesn't apply to me, does not invalidate his results. Linus went against the grain and released a review for a more niche group of buyers, the only people who would actually buy this card, and ironically a group that no one else was catering to. If that's not for you, literally every other tech channel has released a review to line up with your needs. As Steve said, releasing an overpriced product just because there are people who will pay for it, at the expense of most of the people who can't, is a scummy move; regardless, there are people who will pay it, so they deserve consideration from the review space. If you hold the opinion that the 3090 is a gaming card, and you were willing to buy it, then Linus' review is more applicable than Steve's. Not only that, the fact that the 3080Ti uses less VRAM and shares a cooler with the 3080 means that while the total number of GPUs on the market might not change, they may be able to produce more 3080Tis than 3090s. Furthermore, if you are the kind of person who doesn't want to pay scalpers, but at the same time don't care about performance value and will buy anything that meets or exceeds you minimum performance threshold at any price, so long as it's MSRP from a retailer, then the only thing you need to see is if that card meets the minimum specs.

@@XDSDDLord I appreciate your well thought out comment. I'm merely just noticing throughout the years, Steve has always been the same. Whether he had 100K subs, or 1 million subs. He never relents, and is always of the opinion that is best for gamers. Linus meanwhile, has flip flopped on too many occasions, and at this point looks like he pretends to care about the average people. His stance on the 3080Ti is proof of that.

@@XDSDDLord My issue with the LTT review is that it was filmed before the price was announced. I think everyone involved at LTT assumed it would be priced at $999, and went ahead and filmed the review. The only mention of the price was a prerecorded 2 second disappointed face clip which they shoehorned into the video afterwards. Not knowing the price means that at the end of the review when Linus exclaims that purchasing it at MSRP is a "no brainer", Linus was just blindly recommending a product. It didn't matter if the 3080Ti were $899 or $1399, the conclusion of the LTT video would remain "Just buy it!". I'd expect that level of blind product shilling from Tom's Hardware. (to be clear, I don't think Linus is a paid NVIDIA shill, I just think he was excitedly recommending a product when he didn't have all the facts)

@@XDSDDLord "Linus went against the grain and released a review for a more niche group of buyers, the only people who would actually buy this card" And who would that niche group be? Steve already demonstrated that the 3080Tie doesn't offer enough gaming performance compared to price over the 3080 to be worth it for gamers, and the 3080Tie doesn't offer enough VRAM to be worth it to the people that see value in the 3090. The 3080Tie isn't even for the people who want the absolute best gaming performance, price and sense be damned, because the 3090 outperforms it. So who's the niche for the 3080Tie? It's not gamers looking for a good value, it's not gamers looking for the best of the best, and it's not professionals looking for loads of VRAM. The 3080Tie is for nobody.

@@jonlaw16 Yeah, they _really_ should have waited for the price and then wrote the script and filmed the review. The way they did is just stupid. There's no way you can make a decent review like that, because without all the information, you can't compare accurately to competing products. I don't get - why on earth do it this way? Are they that crunched for time? A late review would have been better than this. No review would have been better than this. Doing it the way LTT did it seems like worst case scenario to me.

I like AMD because they actually emphasize the hardware. It used to be that I could rely on Intel to at least value the technology itself, and not feeling totally scammed. I had a concrete image of my dream system being a high end, triple fanned, upper K sku Intel/nVidia rig which when I finally built my system in 2020 it ended up becoming an AMD/AMD. Why? Because the math didn't add up. $200 premium for basically the same performance+upscaling a gimmick implemented on like 3 games. Total system cost inflation by like $300 because of Intel tax not just on getting the board, but also now having to pay for more cooling for the monstrous 14+++++++++ power consumption/thermals. Having to pay even moar to get a higher end PSU to power all this. And then by the time it came down to brass tacks I realized not only I actually wasn't getting anything more, but in fact I was getting even *less*. I'd've had no PCIe 4.0 boot drive on 10700k or whatever. Comparing Asrock Taichi to Taichi, I'd have fewer features on their board, but then it costs $50 more anyway. Why?? For what purpose?? Because the brand name I used to trust a decade ago as being the best? Kudos to guys like Jay, Steve and so on for diving into this stuff because otherwise I probably would've wasted hundreds and hundreds more in complete ignorance. The Wraith Prism pushed it over the edge because the cost of getting the same level performance would be so much more on Intel that I'd already be paying a tier or two higher on AMD if I spent the money there anyway. Main thing AMD fucked up imho is this gen they didn't provide neato included stock coolers as much and charged more. They can't act like they're Intel. It greatly expanded the performance range within my budget.

The 3080 starts at £899 ($1175), so quite a price difference upwards. Going down to the 3070, they're almost impossible to get hold of. So I'm pretty happy to get hold of one. Had the 3070 been more readily available like the Ti, then I might've been a bit more considerate in my purchase decision.

The recent drops in price on the 30 series cards has done well for value to the consumer. I would say dont underestimate Linus

Here’s why I think Linus is being easy on Nvidia. He is probably the only guy with deep connections with Nvidia unlike both Steve’s from Gamer Nexus and Hardware Unboxed who have beef with Nvidia. Now , Linus runs a merch store and naturally he knows the logistics and how Covid has essentially f***** that industry. His Nvidia contact probably shared more info regarding the supply chain and when you see the WAN show he talks about tariffs, shortage, etc. While I don’t think Nvidia is not milking the advantage they have in current market situation I think the reason the prices are exorbitant is so they have insurance against future setbacks. If they aren’t able to sell enough cards for a long time they have to maximise their profits with every card to ensure revenue. I think the situation is going to become worse rather than better. If Biden administration decides to escalate the trade war with China, Nvidia is going to feel a huge blow. If China starts retaliating by making it harder for companies like Nvidia to do business in China thats huge costs that they are going to incur shifting everything. So there is no question profit is a part of the reason but it’s not just greed that caused Nvidia to do this.

@@tecnk1984 Linus specifically mentions in that WAN Show that he's hardly on speaking terms with anyone at Nvidia at the moment. I think in this case it was Linus underestimating the value of MSRP in determining scalper prices.

@@tecnk1984 Bad read imo. Nexus runs a merch shop as well and Steve has talked about the issues many times. Your little example doesnt explain Linu's past shilling vids when talking about Nvidia's top end stupid priced cards either. BTW Nvidia is posting record profits from Gaming this year. So I think your stretching pretty hard on this one.

Kinda funny, I might actually buy this one as they're literally the only cards that are sold at MSRP every now and then here (if you're lucky). Never thought it'd come to that.

GPU pricing is so astronomically overclocked currently I’m considering how much money I’d save by selling my GPU now, using those funds received to pay for Shadow to continue gaming until pricing normalizes.

Eh I bought a 3090 back in November for $1600 and nearly made double back from it mining while I'm at work, sleeping, or watching KZbin. Though can say there has been a few times I considered playing a game and was just like, or I could make $3 in the same time span... used some of the extra money to custom water cool it. Still makes me about $18 in 3 days. Totally worth it.

I could make 2x my money back when I bought my secondhand 1080Ti(e), it's amazing. Bought the damn thing for 330 and I thought I overpaid it by a little, and now I can sell it at 700$ a full 1,5 years later. But yeah, selling my GPU now would left me with a really shitty laptop until the shortage end, and I don't think it's worth the pain to deal with that laptop.

How does the FE cooler compare to an ABI 3-fan cooler? I didn't see noise normalized chart with other 3070 Ti cards..

Hey Steve, since you mentioned you’re in the EC, where in NC can I buy computer parts? I just moved from NJ and 4 hours to the nearest Microcenter is not worthy.
