I definitely experienced this. My wife has vulnerable NPD with psychopathic and sadistic traits. After discard she went on a full blown smear campaign and her gaslighting was greatest aided by counselors that were supposed to be helping us. Their mal attempts to help even convinced some others to become unwitting flying monkeys. This was extremely harmful to me as I was in a vulnerable emotional place at the time. Since then I've worked on my self, developing my self confidence again, and recognizing that even well intentioned people can be very flawed in their reasoning and assessment of people and circumstances. Unfortunately in cases like this, you are your best advocate because no one else in your circle will be able to appreciate the pervasiveness and perniciousness of narcissism unless they've experienced it themselves.

Sam, could you please talk sometime about the difference if any between gaslighting and assuming something based on impressions. For example someone could sound like they are intoxicated but actually have a speech impediment - would it be gaslighting here if people start to make insinuations to the person & gossip etc?

Gaslighting is effected by a gaslighter.

@@samvaknin Yes there is that pattern, but there are others who are more on the fringes who are convinced of it (smear campaign at work) who I don't think are gaslighters but have been convinced because one of the main gaslighters/gossips is the boss. When they learn the truth which they will soon these people will probably distance from the gaslighters. Still doesn't make them good people to have listened to gossip etc. But people like this want to fit in, probably not realising the toxicity of it. I love you and your channel by the way. What if the person I'm dealing with is both a Narcissist(covert vulnerable) and a Psycopath? How does the combination of the two change the intention or how am I supposed to be able to determine the difference?
