Looks great! Quick tip: See how the hinges are cut at an angle on that gate? You have to lift up as you swing it to get it all the way open. Good luck!

Yep, auto-closing lift gate. Great for keeping cattle where they belong when city slickers can't be relied on to keep the gate as they originally found it, either open or closed.

Jeffrey Rule I always wanted to know that also. And my mind seems to have heard that name. Those branches are stiff, an i had one tare my shirt when i jumped off a rock once. Wonder if they are more fire resistant or maybe drought resistant, has to be some reason for that hard smooth surface.

You have the right attitude. Its not the miles that are important, it's the experience, notably an enjoyable one.As one who has trekked many miles on the trail and has seen countless PCT blogs I can tell you your are doing it the currect way.I can't tell how many PCT videos I've seen where its all about the miles. ( I need to get to point A by 5pm or I need to do 21 miles today. If you are in such a hurry then why not take a bloody freeway? Then their blogs are all about how miserable they are.( I have 5 blisters here and my back is killing me.).Seldom do they mention the beauty and the majesty of the land they are traversing. Keep up that attitude that it's the experience and the final goal that's important and you will walk with a much greater reward at the end.

That's brilliant Mary! Yoga on the hike! 🧘‍♀️Stretching is so essential to keep the body limber and flexible. You are on holiday! There is no need to rush...take your time and enjoy the view! Sorry about your gate trouble. I think you need to lift up. I bike pack and see a lot of similar closures during my adventures. Hi Mary... Already it's obvious that you have an outstanding vlog. Love the way you stop to soak in the beauty and features of the trail instead of blasting through like a race horse with blinders on, not seeing anything around him because his only focus is what's ahead. In the grid we're always living in the past or the future, with little time to be in the present. Continue to let the trail bring you into places of solitude where you can find the magic of living in present tense, where personal growth and change occur.

Look at the expressions of joy on Mary's face so early in her journey. Year after year so many people don't know how to open the gates , as with most of them, you lift up the right side and swing open same to close and many more to come. As for the Manzanita trees don't get them confused with a Pacific Madrone . Manzanita tends to be bushy and grow in the chaparral and the Madrone tend to be more like trees and grow up to 100 feet and wider at the base and are in more forest areas.

LOL... was really impressed with your gate vaulting !! You must have been practicing that. The trees with the red, shinny bark is "Manzanita" very common in the area and throughout California; part of the Chaparral group of trees and brush. Able to withstand great heat and wild fires too. The sign you saw was a warning in Spanish telling people to Not risk there lives to the elements. It's not worth your life". or something like that. The varnish barked scrubs are Manzanita, or evergreen shrubs and trees of the genus Arctostaphylos with some 50 species. One is called the Bearberry, or the Kinnikinnick, a flowering low to the ground type of evergreen shrub, of North America,(Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). The clusters of small flowers, may be white, pink, or pink-tipped later in the year the fruit berries are red. Thank you for sharing the trail, love the videos and pics.

It would be interesting to hear you describe Southern California flora (land, earth, dirt, air, plants) compared to the UK flora (yes, I realize that sounds like a wierd question). What does it smell like to you? What's the water taste like? Is the air heavy, lighter, dry? Does the earth feel different between your fingers? Or, is it all the same? How is the North American food you bought? I live in San Diego and it would be darn interesting to hear how you interpret San Diego nature vs. U.K.

A wonderful journey. I must disagree with all who tell you that the "tree" is Manzanita. From your video it is a Madrone. It has a trunk and is a tree, the leaves are oblate and not clustered and rounded. While manzanita can have smooth red bark, with thick stems it is a bush branching from the ground in most cases. Enjoy yourself and I will follow each post.

The sign says: Caution exposing yourself to the elements- its not worth it. Many people die every year trying to get into the US through the desert. The bush/tree is a manzanita. Manzana is Spanish for apple and the "ita" part mean small. They have small red berries that are edible, but a bit of a task. So on the trail it would be a chore. They are "waxy", which is great for drought resistance but bad for fires.

Love your videos, Mary! The red bark on the tree comes from tannins to protect the tree from insects and birds, usually of the Manzanita family. It’s almost irresistible to touch isn’t it? It’s very common here in the southwestern US.

Sorry Lucky Hiker, I’ve only just today had chance to start going through my comments and replying! It’s so hard out here getting the combination of service, enough power, time and juggling all the editing and uploads! I’ll get there eventually 😁 Honestly it is a hard question to answer as both equally friendly, however I must confess I find people in the US make their presence known more so it can come across more of an obvious friendliness as in the UK they are a little more reserved but they are just as friendly😁

I'm amazed by the existence of "running" brooks for water supply. They're usually bone dry. Hope you were able to minimize your water supply pack weight.

Don’t worry Leo! It’s a combination of trying to find time to edit, upload on wifi, conserve battery power and everything else in between! All my videos are now set to come out every 3 days at the moment and then will be every 2 so I’m getting on top of them now with a slight delay on them which has helped

What a breath of fresh air you are, I only hope you can maintain this demeanor throughout your trek. There was a fire through there several years ago, you will be going through lots of burn areas over the next 5 - 6 months. Trail maintenance folks that belong to the PCT Association do their best to maintain the trails, but as there are so many miles of them you will run across areas where they have not been able to get to yet, this year the Mission Creek area is particularly bad due to all of the rains. Lift up as you pull or push on that type of gate, your tree is the Manzanita. You are right, hike your on hike and embrace the suck. SAFE HIKING.

Hi Mary, I was watching PCT Videos and came across yours. So excited to see that you are a vegan too! I went vegan 6 years ago and it has absolutely changed my life as well. I am hoping to do the PCT next year if I can work out a few things. I live in Wrightwood not far from the PCT. If you need anything when you get here just let me know, I would be happy to help. I've went up and shuttled other hikers from the trail head down to the village or into the "big: city withn they needed it.

Good observation on enjoying the journey. Go too fast and you will burn out. Go too slow and you will finish in the snow. Get to the Sierra's too soon and it will be miserable. Get there after the spring thaw and it will be the most beautiful place you've ever seen. Timing is everything. By the way, there are many gate lock designs. Think of them as puzzles and have some fun figuring them out. Thanks for bringing us along!!

I’m going to take a virtual hike with you, a year later. Thank you for being meticulous and sharing so much of the trail. Hiking the PCT is a dream if mine. I live in Oregon and because of the stage I am in life I will likely section hike over a few summers. When I do, I hope to take it slow and enjoy it as you have so far. Many of the videos I watch go something like this, show mile 1 and then mile 35. I am truly thankful for the time and energy you have taken to put these videos together.
