"Know this, my people: These gates shall forever shield us from our enemies." The engraving on the rightmost tower was the only marking that survived. The name of whoever had spoken the words carved into the worn stone was forever lost to history; if there had been some grand city beyond the now-missing gates, no trace of it remained, wiped clean by the hands of time or perhaps some enemy unimpressed by chiseled proclamations.
