Great job. A suggestion if I may, wrap your roller skin tightly with painters' tape before use. When you pull the tape off it takes most of the loose fibers off of the skin.

If you don't want roller lint, try a redtree 3/16 nap mini-mohair roller. I use them for epoxy paint like Alexseal that has agressive solvents, and they last pretty well. UHMWPE plastic works well for trailer bunks and other things that need to slide. Thanks for the tip on scoring the tape. I'm using Dynel and graphite filled epoxy for the same purpose on a wooden kayak skeg, and getting that tape off was a bear.

After sanding the primer, it’s already super clean, just rinse it with water and let it dry, and then you are ready for the top coat, I don’t see the need to use the chemical and all those paper towels to clean between coats , just my 2 cents , 🤗 ps. @@SendItJonBoats yeah, I dealt with the same problem every time I would use oil based products. Usually it’s not a problem when you spray oils on, but when you roll them, there are specific roller naps that are for latex/water based paints, and others for oil/solvent based products. The latex naps will shed like crazy in oil paints. Took me a long time to figure that one out.

I wonder if anyone has ever applied this to the bottom of a mower deck .. if it would help all the grass cliplings discharge without caking up on the bottom of your mower deck .. the dirt, sand, a grass clippings hold moisture in and rust out steel decks over time if you don't get under it and scrape the crap off .. I use cheap cooking spray and it helps prevent buildup fairly well... nice job on your boat .. let me know if you ever try it on a lawn mower. Thanks

I'm a newbie to your video's and find them very well put together. Would stainless steel rivets offer more strength. There are also air operated rivet guns that would get in closer spaces ! I had the floats welded on cost over $500.00 he did a perfect job I cut the handles off the back so nothing can be tied off or snagged on them also changed the drain plugs to type you tighten with a wrench ! I think I would used a shop vac to get some of the dust off then wipe it down !

Question: I have a 12 foot Orlando Clipper V hull aluminum center console boat with a 15hp Johnson outboard motor, top speed is about 23 mph. My problem is I have a small leak on the bottom of the boat somewhere. I've tried to repair it with silicone and it worked to a degree but did not seal it completely. Because the boat goes pretty fast the water friction on the bottom of the boat is high. I'm looking for a liquid application like solvent or paint. What product do you recommend that would permanently fix the leak.
@SendItJonBoats
@SendItJonBoats 2 жыл бұрын
It is a boat, not a submarine... a little water in the boat is not going to hurt anything dude. My boat has like 19 leaking rivets and we fishi with 10 plus gallons of water in the boat and it floats just fine. Either replace the rivet, or just leave it alone. Quit trying to smear junk on it.

Looks like a great bottom coat product, and according to the website it will stick to just about anything including fiberglass (but not to UHMW). I see it is _not_ recommended for full time saltwater use as well. I know a lot of people who use different colors for each coat of their anti-fouling paint, it does make it easier to know when you need to reapply it, and they've got LOTS of colors.

@SendItJonBoats
@SendItJonBoats 3 жыл бұрын
Bonds to fiberglass so long as it is properly prepped. I have not tested it for abrasion but I know the airboat guys have been using it for years and they say it works well. It will need to be touched up in the future but that is easy, clean, scuff, and put on another coat.
@chevyon37s
@chevyon37s 3 жыл бұрын
It does fairly well if you keep in mind it’s a sacrificial coating, and you will have to reapply eventually dependent on use. I have 2 years on my fiberglass layout boat bottom, and I think I did 3 coats of just gatorglide (no gator base) on top of the gel coat after sanding it. And I have minimal wear through on one spot and a few scratches from rocks. I drag the boat over dry land a bit and I didn’t notice any real reduction in difficulty to drag it, but it’s easier to slide on and off my trailer for sure. Personally I probably wouldn’t put it on a wave runner unless you really beach it every single time you ride it to a sandbar or something, but even then. You’ll either be recoating gator glide or gel coat at some point.

@@SendItJonBoats thanks for your info. Also i want to thank you for doing the video. The effort and education was very well done and helped me tremendously in my personal research of protecting my investment. Yamaha has this material that they refer to as nano cell. From what the other yamaha pwc owners have shared with their experience with the stuff, it has some real bad issues. Ive seen it delaminate in sections so big it's scary. If you get a small hole, the pressure from the water getting in the hole while riding has made it disentegrate terribly. You may get other owners like myself looking for a solution. Im more in tune with a preventative maintenance Solution to a future would be problem. Yamaha has a serious issue with the malfuntioning properties of their nano hulls. To make the skis light an perform well, they made these fragile hulls. I dont want to lose my investment when i know i can strengthen the hull with the right product. Be careful with paint strippers. Some contain strong caustic that and make Swiss cheese out of aluminum. Also, solvents fumes are not good in enclosed spaces, toxic and flammable.

I always used stealflex/2000 back in the day. Couple tricks maybe for whoever interested. As far as primers go don’t bother leave bare aluminum sand blast is ok but 24 grit is better if you got a flat hull. Clean with 90% rubbing alcohol AFTER you blow it off or vacuum all the dust AND wash with dawn/soap and water. When you apply epoxy use the finest nap hair roller you can find. 1/8”... apply a coat front to back and once you get to back if front is still tacky start again. If it’s not you fked up.... Only two coats. 3 depending on thickness just messes up and the thicker an epoxy is the easier it chips in bigger pieces... Once you apply second coat just peal tape off and razor as you go but if it’s still wet you can just peal tape off for a good line. And then take a hair dryer or 2 is better to the whole deal while it’s drying. It’ll help flatten it out so you get a car paint type of finish not wavy. Especially if you used a good fine nap roller. So. Deeper scuffs the better. Wash. No dust. Alcohol. Apply whole coats. And only apply second coats to a wet coat. Super fine nap roller. Hair dryers. Let sit twice as long as recommended.

It is not made to seal rivets, and I do not recommend any goop, slop, paint, roll on, stick icky, gluey junk to seal bad rivets. Drill the bad rivet out, put a new one in and do it right.

The 3 big things to watch for with Gator Glide is 1. don't put it on at night 2. don't do it in direct sunlight 3. don't apply it when its raining or overly humid. Get you a covered area on a warm day and get to it dude, it's easy. Just a lot of time standing there rolling.
