This video is missing a few important details. On the gauges that have the needle resting against small 'posts', that is not to be considered the 'neutral' position of the needle. You need to carefully lift the end of the needle over the post and then slowly settle in it's true neutral position. You then carefully mark that point just away from the needle's tip in a place that won't be visible once it's together. Regarding pulling the needles, the tutorial I saw stated that it's important to take them off in a twisting motion, with the shaft held by some very small pliers. You need to not only keep the shaft from being pulled out of the motor, but also keep it from spinning so you can twist while you pull the needle off. I didn't have anything small enough to do this, so I was forced to go the melt & drill holes from the front to gain access to the screws that hold the display on. I'm currently waiting for the required T8 driver to re-fasten those screws. I got them out with the T9 I had, but no way am I dealing with trying to use the wrong size to put it together. As a side note, it's amazing how little stores have, even in a large metropolitan area like the S.F. Bay Area. I couldn't find any pliers like the guy in the video I watched use, nor did anyone have a T8 driver (can not use hex-drive bits). Amazon will have like twenty different kinds, but the local stores, NOTHING! No wonder retail is dying...

How do we put them back without messing up the calibration? Plug them in exact position they were, or, gently push them down while spinning counter clockwise and somehow resetting the stepper motor?

Of course, but a bit later, as patent is still pending.

Just did this repair. Problem with one needle (gas). Placed tool correctly, however would not release the needle. Spindle / post started coming out (tool held the gold collet attached to the spring). Had I kept pulling, post would have come out, but not the spring. Not sure if this gauge is going to work. Drilling out would be difficult. My panel has thick piece of clear plastic on top of the white plastic, and drilling would compromise the clear plastic keeper holding black overlay down. I'll work on getting pictures if you want. Other than this, its gone very easily and would not have taken long at all to fix..... The directions you send with it have great great pictures and explanations... (except for the very last part, attaching ribbon to board with lcd already attached to ribbon)... and there's a video in here for that... so should be good to go piecing it all together and with the mixed situation my particular panel presented. Your kit was super great, had everything in it.. and I'll let ya know how it comes out when totally finished.... Thanks for great save!!

I have a stupid question: When gauge needle is removed, isn't the spring unwinding the shaft? What about placing back the needle? Is there any specific tension, for the spring, to ensure proper functioning?
@Csiboreszkudo8 жыл бұрын
Nithing special to do. You just put the needle back to in the right position, so the needle stops at zero. Just make sure you have a gap between the face and the needle, otherwise the needle will not move, so the gauge will not work.

@@Csiboreszkudo i believe he is right though, i managed to fabricate a tool to do the removal but the putting the needles back in was a pain in the behind... i wound them up myself, but too little and the needles are jittery, too much and maybe they don't rise? managed to get it right after like 3rd try.
@airwarrior37646 жыл бұрын
I have your tool and it does hold. However, it seems like over time these needles "bake on" to the spindle and are very difficult to remove. I've actually bent the tool considerably in the course of trying to remove the needle..... It holds, though literally bends as you try to remove the needle. Because all the needles are almost like 'welded' to the spindle, I'm concerned about bending that spindle (that goes into the motor), trying to remove any of the needles. I'm wondering if sitting in the sun as time goes on, tends to lock them in tighter? BTW I was able to remove all needles but one on the first cluster, this second one is a totally different story (there's about 200K miles more on the cluster). For what its worth, your provided tool might need to be a little more robust as these cars continue to age and their needles lock in more over time. (PS your instructions about drilling versus needle removal are excellent! I had to go that route because of the one needle that didn't come off and hit all 4 dead on, first time).

Is this needle removal the same for the 2003 Range Rover L322? This was the time that BMW owned Land Rover and there are many BMW parts throughout the vehicle.
@Csiboreszkudo8 жыл бұрын
Yes it is. Basically E38, E39, X5 and M5 BMW, and L322 Range Rover all use the same hardware with minor modifications. The same tool fits all.

Hello, thank you for the informal video. I have few questions: How do you put on the needles back and position them to 0 position? And the second question would be how could I remove the needles on bmw e91 EU gauge? I assume there's different construction of the gauge and the motors, and some videos on youtube shows that you just simply can remove them like you removed consumption needle. Hoping you will see this comment and help me out, thanks in advance and good luck with upcoming videos!

Thank you for posting this! Is there a video in this series that shows the removal of the old LCD/Ribbon prep for the new one?
@Csiboreszkudo7 жыл бұрын
There is no such video, but it is rather simple. You just peel the old one off, and clean the residuals off with acetone and qtips. You need to make sure the pads are 100% clean, otherwise the connection between the silver ribbon cable and the panel will not be good enough. I hope it helps.
