I am a humongous, lifelong fan of the Genesis soundchip. The music one could make with that thing is on a completely different level from any other instrument on the planet, but so few people could work its magic. The single song is the proof to that belief. This magnum opus causes the Genesis to make sounds even *I* didn't know it was capable of. It's truly majestic.

At around 1:42 it starts to remind me of an Undertale song. I can't think of which one/s, though. I wonder if Toby Fox ever played this game and was inspired? edit: Changed "sound vaguely like" into "remind me of", for clarity.

You mean Undertale starts to sound vaguely like this, since this predates it by about 20 years
@bluelfsuma
@bluelfsuma 8 ай бұрын
@@TheMalMeninga No, I mean, it starts to remind me of an Undertale song. Because I'm not listening to Undertale at the moment, it's coming out of my memory. I didn't bother to word it like so because I expected most people here know this game is older, and understand my meaning.

Walt a moment! Genesis chip wasn't only a FM Chip? How pcm ?
@jc_dogen

6th channel could play pcm samples, but I don't think this song uses any. The percussion is all fm.
@TheGreatGario
@TheGreatGario 2 жыл бұрын
from what i learned about the genesis, apparently the FM chip isn't the only sound chip in the system. It also has a holdover from the Mastersystem integrated into it, which has four PCM channels, three of which simulate a basic square wave and a fourth that acts as a noise channel it's pretty interesting stuff, even if it took over a year for someone to answer that question
@SpiralPegasus
@SpiralPegasus 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheGreatGario no, the SMS chip can only play 3 square waves and one noise channel. There is only one default PCM channel on Genesis. Thanks to Toy Story dev being the God that he is, however, nowadays you can use a known trick to allow up to 4 PCM samples on that one channel by playing with sample size and timings. So that'd be. 5 FM, 3 square waves, one noise and 4 PCM. Talk about amazing!
@crimson-foxtwitch2581
@crimson-foxtwitch2581 2 жыл бұрын
@@SpiralPegasus software multiplexing, but it requires a lot of CPU power to do so. most Genesis games only used 1 PCM channel for this reason. a handful used PSG3+4(noise channel) for hihats also some later titles opted for FM drums to both save on space and reserve FM6 for sound effects(assigning less important layers to that channel, such as Metal Squad using it for guitar 2’s echo) there is a driver out there that uses less CPU while capable of playing two PCM samples simultaneously though. as for this song, it’s actually entirely FM+PSG. the drums are all FM, the basses are FM, but the arpeggio is a combination of FM and PSG

From what i remember, the developers didn't think the sound hardware was quite up to the task of producing what they envisioned for Gauntlet IV and so rewrote it all from scratch, I'm guessing they wrote the extra audio hardware they needed in software, much the same as emulators emulate hardware today, i remember hearing about it around release (when it was still in the magazines) and thinking they were absolute legends for doing that considering the MegaDrive / Genesis Yamaha YM2612 audio was already quite capable. What an amazing and haunting soundtrack.
