Gavin said in his home growing up there was "Open dialogue every step of the way". I think of how this young boy could move through the world with his parents, muscles relaxed, not being on egg shells, not worried at every turn what was going to happen. It sounded like he had a safe place to fall and grow. Also what moves me is living by principle.

Yeah. He was lucky. We had to walk on eggshells not knowing if we had a place to live, if we said something my mom didn't agree with🫠

I enjoyed the conversation. I really dug the nuances in some of Gavin's responses. Even within the masculine approach, you could feel the emotion. Shielded and vulnerable at the same time. Or human, as you all would say.

I enjoyed Gavin's Raw, Unpretentious, and Authentic way of showing up. It wasn't "Holy" or "Wretched", it was Straight Down the Middle Path. With Love and Deference to the vulnerable. I imagined what I could offer and how I would show up were I a guest on this show, and now..... I'd have to reconsider it altogether 🤔 Steel sharpens Steel⚔️ Would stood out for me is when Gavin spoke about the expectations that men are held to, and the value of principles and ethics in the discussion of healing Masculinity.

Fantastic discussion about bullies and I'm glad it was talked about at some length. I'd have to agree with both of them, really. I was bullied to the point of quitting high school, and much of what I dealt with was because I had my "hands tied." I was a martial artist and I had a strict rule of '"No fighting. If you do, no more martial arts." This became a catch-22 for me. Martial arts had given me the mental fortitude to not hurt myself or others, so in one way it was my savior. (I'm convinced I didn't commit suicide because of what the arts taught me. 100%) But it held me back from even speaking up for myself because I was worried it would escalate. So I dealt with it until I basically just gave up and quit high school, which I hid from my family. Fast forward to many years later and many of the bullies would reach out to me to apologize and would almost verbatim share with me what Justin described: their own insecurities, violence at home, pressure of being who their father or parents wanted them to be, being in the closet because of the strict religious household they'd come from. There were a lot of tears and emotions on both sides of these conversations. It's also something that I felt that I'd learn to forgive, but it still bubbles up constantly and is one of my biggest hurdles. And forgiveness or not, it's something that I dealt with nonstop for over a decade of my life, during my most formative years. I say all of this because I feel like bullying is where so much of this patriarchal structure comes into play into us men masking and armoring up, just as Justin talks about in his book. It turns sensitive, caring boys into men that hide the deepest parts of themselves in an effort to fit in, oftentimes to irreprable damage to themselves and those around them. Another reason why I think A Call To Men, Success Stories, and others like them are doing such incredible work. And another reason why I hope against hope that Justin's next book becomes an Oprah-Book-Club level phenomenon. Because I feel like it's at the core of everything that's discussed on this show. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk. 🤣 I know it's a wall of text here. This one just hit home. Hard.

Proud of you three for pushing and questioning Gavin. Being some of the few people brave enough to do that. Like Justin said, fighting with words is harder than physically. Because you don't know how the person will receive it and if not well, then things could be very uncomfortable. However, being a semi-regular, I've been here long enough to know that THAT is what this podcast is about. Sitting in the discomfort and allowing ourselves to grow. Thank you guys!
