Should be noted that while you said Taft won, he didn’t win fairly, Teddy had more delegates and thus should have won. But the conservative party bosses literally locked them out of the building. So Teddy would have won if all delegates were fairly counted.

Taft was more progressive than Roosevelt though. This is a historically verifiable fact. He busted twice as many trusts as Roosevelt in half the time. And so the fact that Roosevelt won more of the delegates in the Republican Party leadership, many of whom were people affected by Taft's trust-busting themselves, shouldn't come as a shock.

There is an important thing to note. Although you mentioned some of Newsom's actions, he probably couldn't do that with the Dems in California Legislature. They have a supermajority in both chambers. If Newsom becomes president, he won't have a majority near that. Also, Dem lean judges seat most of California's courts, and they can prevent judicial victories against Newsom's actions. The federal judiciary, on the other hand, is a different story.

The only reason he wasn't recalled was because Larry Elder didn't stay out of it and was too extreme and people had to choose between him or Newsom, so they picked Newsom. But Newsom should've been recalled. Being caught in a fancy restaurant which was supposed to be closed, per his own order, drinking 20,000$ worth of wine, no masks, while his orders are putting thousands of businesses out of business permanently merits impeachment. Then he sent his kid to a summer camp with no masks, Then he got caught again with Magic Johnson. He's a complete joke. I hope its him Vs DeSantis, DeSantis will kick his ass.

Two things need to be said. One: as others have said, your analysis on the recall is slightly problematic. Any California recall of a democratic governor will get about 38% due to the fact that republican voters will always vote to recall. Newsom came out of the recall with a similar margin a victory has that of a regular election. The biggest problem I have with Newsom is his complete abandonment of the single payer healthcare plan for California. The implementation was actually quite ingenious. It would seek waivers for all health care and healthcare related remittances the state makes to federal programs and instead expand Medicare to all California's and have the taxes deposited into a healthcare account. The state would also place a tax on businesses earning a certain amount of profit. This would be a smaller percentage than most California businesses pay for employee health insurance through private companies. Cost would be kept in line because every doctor, medical provider, company, or practice, could choose to enter into a contract with the state individually or as a group. It would also have required providers to disclose their costs when seeking to be reimbursed. The idea of keeping California health Care money in California, and that the average business would end up paying less than they do under the current system, would have been easy sell for the fiscally conservative.

One thing to note is that while incumbents being successfully primaried by their own party is rather rare, there have been examples, such as in 1968 with President Johnson, where a president can be pressured not to seek re-election. We are still many months from the first sniff of a primary, so we will have to see if this is the case with Biden.

Hey guys, I am normally a massive fan your work, but I respectfully suggest here that you are misunderstanding this. San Francisco politics are notoriously combative, as are the politics within the California Democratic party. The fact that he successfully navigated the conflict between the moderates and liberals in both of these situations is a big deal. If California was its own country, it would leave Newsom running the fifth largest economy in the world. More than one in ten Americans are his constituents. The video also makes no mention of the possibility of Biden choosing to not seek reelection. I could be wrong about this, but if Newsom chose to run against Biden I'd be shocked. If he defeated Biden and lost the general, or if he beat up Biden in the primary and then Biden lost the 2024 presidential election, I believe that would be the end of Newsom's presidential aspirations. Many Democrats were furious at Kennedy for their perception that Kennedy softened up Carter for Regan; Kennedy never ran for President again after 1980. I don't know if I would actually support Newsom, but I did want to offer a different perspective on this. You are an amazing outlet, and I love the Daily Briefing, I just think you missed the boat on this one.

"If California was its own country, it would leave Newsom running the fifth largest economy in the world." That's not due to him though. Brits butcher every other language, it was only inevitable that they butcher their own. 🤣 Seriously though, it's odd that the British pronunciation is even further than the American pronunciation from the original French "LIEU-t'nont." But since it consists of two words that exist in English - "lieu" and "tenant" - the British pronunciation of "lieutenant" doesn't make sense, and the American pronunciation makes perfect sense.

IMO Newsom survived to recall for the same reason the last few presidents have been elected: The other options were awful. He was the least objectionable candidate, NOT a prefered candidate. He governs in a state with massive budgets and super majorities in the state senate yet can't get anything significant done. The sad truth is we have a severe lack of good, honest leaders in the US (I know good/honest and politician don't go together).

Well he signs the bills. The supermajorities in the legislature write and pass the bills. However, I note he has vetoed ranked choice voting which is a very moderate improvement to the current voting system. Good politicians are often sidelined and kept down. System needs significant reform to make it more competitive and less corrupt.
