New Zealand had this drama a few years ago. Turned out a high level public servant had lied about having a phd to get her job, and was calling herself a doctor. A simple check of the publicly available online university database would have shown she never graduated with a phd. When asked why, she claimed she only didn't graduate due to bureaucratic reasons, but she believed she had completed all the requirements anyway. The media took this and ran with "her degree was in her head" lol.

Howard Dean, running for the Democratic nomination, delivered a speech on Jan 19, 2004 wherein he got a little over-excited and added a scream… the Dean Scream. It got Democrats worried about his suitability and in days his run was over. If similar standards were upheld in 2015 Trump would have face-planted before he got to the bottom of the escalator.

@@CarFreeSegnitz People severely exaggerate how much the Dean scream actually affected things. He was projected to win Iowa, but returns mere hours before that rally had him at a distant third. His fall had nothing to do with his scream- in fact it was his own incompetence with the campaign he built, wasting all of the funds which he had built up before the primaries by the time of New Hampshire (the second primary at the time after Iowa). Instead, all of his momentum went to the far more charismatic John Edwards, who held many of the same policy positions. Now, it is also important to note that it never ruined his career. By primary’s end, he was chosen to lead the DNC as its chairman. And during that four year stretch, he was able to create his “50 State Strategy”, netting the Dems 13 Senate seats and over 50 House seats. The Obama campaign took from Dean’s policy positions but Obama himself being the charisma bomb he is was able to pull in more voters with that message- in short Dean helped the Dems so much as DNC Chairman that it’s hard to say anything conclusive about his 2004 campaign other than it was marred by mistake after mistake, but the torch would be carried on by Obama.

This is just a small selection his lies. There's a video of him being interviewed by a Brasilian podcast where he criticises illegal immigrants who want to get citizenship because its "wrong to begin a relationship with a lie". In the same podcast he claimed to have got mugged and had his shoes stolen in central New York, and to have survived an assassination attempt. Obviously neither of those things happened.

Just a note - the district lines at 3:50 are wrong. That's the current NY-03 district - the one Santos represents now. In 2020, when Santos lost, it was different (more centered along the northern coast of Manhattan), and more Democrat-friendly.

Not really. Truss is still an MP. The US House of Representatives can also oust its own leadership, and can even expel members, but the latter is meant to be exceptional event and requires a 2/3 supermajority.
