I had never heard of Gavin until that book from Megan Basham came out. His response was so reasonable and kind in the face of obvious slander that I decided to check out some of his other videos. I'm so glad to see mature believers speaking to the church in the space between the extremes. We need more of that. The Lord bless you.

Ortlund is no "Shepard for Sale," although he deserves criticism for his liberal teachings on climate change and creation. I agree he is a humble guy, and most of his teaching is good, especially regarding traditional Protestantism. I suspect he spent too much time in academia listening to liberal professors. Also, Basham's book exposed tons of false teachings being pushed on Evangelicals today. I'm grateful she wrote it.

What do you mean by liberal? Having watched hundreds of hours of Gavin, including his climate change related videos I understand that he is compelled by the weight of scientific evidence. Obviously some consider the evidence to be less compelling but I don't understand how that would make him liberal?

My hot take is that studying church history has made me more aware of the church's constant need to be checking and reforming itself as there are just so many ways and reasons that we can get off track.

I love brother Gavin. His videos are well researched and as always, challenged. Filled with the fruit of the spirit.

Been watching Gavin for the better part of a year now. I've been SO blessed by his videos. He speaks so clearly and directly to the sense of intellectual and spiritual anxiety and deconstruction running roughshod over the church & culture nowadays.

Gavin Ortlund is a very thoughtful and clear speaker. I find him quite insightful and illuminating. And I think he's right that resting in the heart of Christ is central. But I think God created us with both a heart and mind and so the doctrines and intellectual warrant of our faith needs to also come together to form a coherent, full-blooded faith that speaks to both our emotion and reason. The other point I would make is that we do need an interpretive authority to understand Christianity. It just cannot be the case that God requires each of us to become a Protestant super-theologian to learn to read Hebrew and Koine Greek and develop our own understanding of the Bible. Most just don't have the will, intellect, or time, to do all that. So all of us need to accept some authority to help us understand the Bible with all its depth and profound theology. So the issue is not whether we should rely on the Catholic tradition, but which tradition and authority we should accept whether it's your local pastor, Gavin, or the Catholic Church authority. I must say that I lean toward the last because even the Bible itself was formed through tradition and councils. We only have those 27 NT books because that was declared canonical by a Catholic council. I think the Holy Spirit was at work there and continued to guide the Catholic Church across time. And if you research the Trinitarian doctrine which is key to Christianity, you'll find that hammering that doctrine out required a lot of intense work and also the work of the councils of the Catholic Church. So even if you are Protestant you are implicitly relying on a lot of work that was done through the Catholic tradition. God bless Gavin and all my Protestant brothers and sisters!

As one from Northern Ireland where 2 tribes remain, I don’t call myself Protestant due to its massively unhelpful connotations here.

It’s Monday. I went to the Catholic church yesterday. Which church do you want me to go to here in England next Sunday? I might want to do some research. If I become a follower of Jan Hus, at least I won’t have to do a U-turn on transubstantiation. Unfortunately I do not know of any Hussite churches in my vicinity.

I know we hear lots about the big move towards the RCC, but we're often not remembering that the RCC has lost roughly a third of its adherents in the past 25 years. That's a lot of dechurched people who might be open to the right hook back into a Christianity.

Meat,, The Catholic Church that Jesus Christ established on Peter the rock, way before the new testament was ever written, still has over 1 billion Catholic Christians, the largest Christian Church! I appreciate Gavin's effort to avoid creating harsh caricatures of Roman Catholic individuals, but in this interview, he blurs much of the distinction between Roman Catholics and Protestants. If you listen closely, most of Gavin's responses to Colin's questions focus more on positive aspects than on biblical arguments against Roman Catholicism. We can be gracious towards people from Roman Catholic churches while still being clear about their inconsistencies on foundational Scriptural truths. If I were a Roman Catholic, this discussion might deepen my appreciation for Catholic tradition but would not highlight the unique aspects of Protestantism. It's important to draw clear lines and maintain a gracious tone, rather than blurring distinctions and pleading for charity between the two camps.

It's worth checking out some of Gavin's videos for much more granular biblical analyses of the Roman Catholic positions. I think his goal here is a quick, winsome presentation of Protestantism rather than a full-fledged biblical defense. I find his videos on icon veneration especially persuasive.
