Well, to be fair, it was only a little over a century ago when radio was invented, and before that communications were basically all hand-delivered. The tech we have now, even the most mundane phone, would basically be magic to them, so realistically advanced communications centuries from now will be pretty rock-solid, though obviously not perfect.

I know the point of this scene is to re-emphasise just how much of a douche Gavin is, and it's hilarious at that, but in all seriousness, that outburst was quite justified when you think about. He pays $20,000,000 for a piece of technology, and the only thing the person in charge of it can suggest is to just use the audio?
